May 22 2009'The Last Airbender' Photos: It's the Kid with the Arrow on his Head
USA Today has posted some shots from The Last Airbender, M. Night Shyamalan's adaptation of that Nickelodeon cartoon that looked like a fake anime starring a bald kid. Above is the first look at unknown Noah Ringer as Aang, the aforementioned bald kid.
Now I'm no Avatard (Trishna87, who sent this in, claimed that's a term), but I'd say this kid at least does a pretty good job capturing the look of "bald kid in a fairly expensive, store-bought Avatar: The Last Airbender Halloween costume." In terms of accuracy, that's marginally more successful than Dragonball!
Below the cut, Slumdog Millionaire as Prince Zuko, who is apparently another character in this world.

I did not know Shyamalan was directing this. I don't know how I feel about that. Of course, I've never seen the show, so it doesn't matter to me either way.

You are really missing out. My husband made me watch an episode and I was hooked. It is an awesome show and I don't even watch/like anime.
4. squeehunter - May 22, 2009 12:14 PM
While it has an anime look to it, it's not anime in spirit. It's a really good show.
5. squeegiehunted - May 22, 2009 12:27 PM
It's not a good show. But heck, they're even making a movie of friggin' "Battleship". Someone, somewhere is eating boogers.
6. leg3nd - May 22, 2009 12:42 PM
So,I wonder what the twist will be? Will M. Night appear in this film also?
7. Elmo - May 22, 2009 1:56 PM

As an "Avatard", I think Aang's head arrow is a lil too subtle and the design on his leggings looks very amateurish. All in all, his entire get up just feels too clean. You were exactly right in saying it looks like a Halloween costume. The world is supposed to be ancient and low tech. That entire suit looks like it was made by a machine.
Zuko, on the other hand, looks pretty decent. The fire effect looks like cheap pyrotechnics, which it clearly is, but I can't really judge it till I see their abilities in motion.
I'm still hoping they work in a cameo of Toph, just in case we don't ever get Book 2.

That chick he has a crush on is from the water tribe where the womenfolk learn to run singer sewing machines. That's why his cloths look so well made.
Yea, I watched some episodes of this show when it started but it soon became too drawn out for me. Kinda like a cartoon soap opera that never ends.
I certainly hope the movie is not as hokey looking as these pics.

Even if it is a knock-off anime type cartoon it still has a good storyline. I caught an episode when I got tired of another Obama speech lectures, and couldn't find anything else to watch. I ended up "Tivo'ing" it and watched the whole series. I agree with the comment tho about the costurme and Aang's tattoos.

My son watched the series religiously. I caught a few episodes and I have to admit that it's a notch above the usual anime-crap that gets on TV nowadays.
I hope that M. Night does a good job with it.

As an avatar fan who isn't retarded, I am still very annoyed by the ethnicity of the casting choices.

Agree with mild. The race bending is quite ridiculous. I love the series, but I feel M. Night SHamalahdlskdfjal;skdjfn is going to try his best to fuckbend this series into a deep hole. I do think it'll be better than Generic Martial Arts Film A (Dragon Ball), but it just doesn't have much promise. Incoming WHAT A TWIST.

Love the Animated series. It is seriously the best written television show ever. Great endearing characters, bad ass evil villains. Incredible story line set in a universe that is Chinese Inspired.
There are great moral stories in it. I dont know ow you can fit 3 seasons into a couple of hours though. Maybe if it is good it will be a trilogy as all of the season enders where excellent.
I never post anything but complete bullshit and snarky remarks on these sites, but this show deserves better!!
15. KaiserNeko - May 22, 2009 8:06 PM
I still wish they weren't making most of the cast Caucasian and Arabic, considering the ENTIRE CAST OF THE SHOW IS ASIAN.
16. AvatarAng - May 22, 2009 8:38 PM
ok angs tattoo and staf both look wrong. where is zuko's scar. yeah my hopes for this just went down...~sight~... thanks M. Night Shyamalan's..
17. K. Engels - May 22, 2009 11:08 PM
Uh, KaiserNeko, Dev Patel is Indian, not "Arabic". India is, surprise, surprise, in Asia...

Not looking forward to this...
20. Lokuzt - May 23, 2009 5:00 AM
ahm.... well, it looks only -slightly- better in the visual department than dragonball (which, as we all know sucked ass) yet I demand more from the adaptation of such a fun show!
Shyamalan better leave alone the humor and martial arts just like in the series...

Screw Aang, I want to see Appa. Yeppi, yep! :D

24. Trevor - May 24, 2009 3:35 AM
shouldnt zuko have a scar?
25. puffycat - May 24, 2009 10:20 AM
isn't the avatar supposed to be chinese?
26. Hql - May 24, 2009 11:06 AM
Too bad Mako isn't alive to be in this (he was a voice in show) - at least Takei can be cast in multiple parts (he voiced multiple characters in show).
27. Jewel - May 25, 2009 11:24 PM
What a crappy choice for Prince Zuko...he's my favorite character in the cartoon cuz he's dark and mysterious and good looking...everything slumdog boy isn't...what a shame...
28. asiantom - May 26, 2009 11:36 AM
needs more asians x10000
29. Norad Bush - May 26, 2009 2:10 PM
Wow, seriously? A show about all Asian kids with no actual Asian kids? Nice, Hollywood. Real nice.
In related news, I vote we recast the role of Twilight's Edward Cullen with Flava Flav. Now THAT'S some race bending I'd like to see.
30. Rhialto - May 26, 2009 3:19 PM
Dragonball isn't bad at all.Technically it's very allright. The only thing is that the Asian (male) actors are acting very Asian. That's why it makes the most money in the foreign countries. With this movie being written, directed and produced by an Indian American filmmaker,we just have to wait and see.
31. Darth - May 26, 2009 3:38 PM
Those chicks in Dragonball acted great!
32. Hailey - May 27, 2009 4:40 AM
How can this film call itself "The Last Airbender" if 99% of the characters don't bear the slightest resemblence to the actors? Sure, the actor they picked for Aang looks exactly like he does in the cartoon, but it doesn't make sense to have a white hero when the race he was born into looked totally asian.
Also, why the tell are the Fire Nation (AKA the bad guys) all played by Indians? Is M. Night going to make a cameo as a Fire Nation dude or something?
33. lock47 - June 4, 2009 5:36 AM
Just when I thought Shyamalan's movies couldn't get any worse! They ruined AVATAR! This sucks. I don't like Aang in this.
34. faewren - June 12, 2009 3:55 PM
Y'know about the racial thing - although the show feels incredibly Asian-inspired ('cause y'know . . . it is), there is no specific racial trait to anyone except the water tribe which has brown skin. There are no almond-shaped eyes, the iris color in the countries is not all brown.
I think it's just difficult to have a martial arts epic show in a western themed world, since we developed brawling, boxing and flailing weapons around for our fighting styles.
But why oh why did M. Night Shamallama have to be the director? I agree with the bad Air Nomad Arrow, Zuko's scar is there if you squint, and the costumes look incredibly rushed and it feels like no effort was put in to make it feel 'authentic'.
Supposedly they're planning on three movies. I doubt they're gonna make it. Not even fantastic actors and superior acting can save this film.
And for a M.N.S. twist at the end . . . it's all just a bunch of people in a coma living out their fantasies in a giant computer! (Since he feels the need to put a twist in all his movies.)
35. freeyourmind00 - July 4, 2009 3:47 AM
Aang looks like he's a 6-year-old about to go trick-or-treating with daddy. I think I'll skip the movie and stick to the show. Looks like a formula for epic failure to me and I'd rather not have the show ruined.
36. chu - July 8, 2009 11:23 PM
The casting seems all wrong...
I would have wanted a chinese shaolin to play Aang
and someone who has Japanese/Chinese ethnicity to play Zuko.
No offense to the slumdog actor.
37. wow - July 17, 2009 11:49 PM
i don't liike this cast at all...they don't fit the characters...for example the person they chose for zukco looks nothing like him..they didn't even do the scar right...they're destroying the movie already....n upsetting me ....they have just killed verything thing
38. mycki - August 8, 2009 5:07 PM
does m. Night shyamalan have ason
39. A>D>W - August 25, 2009 3:59 PM
I don't know...I think that it sucks tha thtey couldn't even get the nationalities correct and that some of the actors don't even look like the original characters. I know it's sometimes difficult to get people who look like the character, but they could have tried a little harder. Since the creators of the Avatar cartoon are working with Shyamalan, I'm going to be optimistic about the movie.
40. Tmdrummer - October 25, 2009 2:22 AM
I liked the show but that movie just looks to cheesy. Also last time I saw an M. Night Shamanamalamanama, (is that really his name?), movie it sucked. (The happening)
By the way, since M. Night Shamanamashedpotatoes is directing it shouldnt it have more funding for special effects... and costumes... and actors.
