May 19 2009'Sherlock Holmes' Trailer: It's a Fun One

sherlock-holmes-trailer.jpg

I try not to ever say a movie "looks like a fun one." That's how my grandparents used to describe movies, and I hoped to never devolve to such a simplistic level of critique that judges all films as "fun ones," "renters," or head shakes and disgusted sighs. But I see no other way to describe Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes. It genuinely looks like a "fun one." And not like a Transformers fun one, where enjoying the scant moments of fun means pushing aside all the aggravating, brain-hurting, often nonsensical events that led you there. A genuine fun one. Non-Crystal Skull Indiana Jones type fun.

The trailer:

Ah, the Guy Ritchie signature: stylized shots of some shirtless guys beating each other up.

Seem alright though, yeah? Fun, even.

Always with the slow motion punching...

looks real enjoyable.

first?

I must remember to use that line at the end of the trailer

I like that you insulted two movies to praise one.

I never knew the late 19th century could be so exciting. Looks awesome.

Since when was Sherlock Holmes an action hero??

Ooo that does look fun! Is it just me or is Robert Downey Jr starting to seem a little Hugh Laurie-ish?

Looks like crap to me. Typical all action no brains crap. Holmes is Cerebral which I guess for your typical moving going audiance would be over their heads. Thats all most a joke...much like this movie will be.
People who love Holmes will hate it and those that dont love Holmes will stay far away from this movie because of the title alone.
Robert Downie Jr as Holmes? There is only one Holmes and that's Jeremy Brett

@6- I was thinking that too, maybe it's the accent?

Come on #6, it's Guy Ritchy and Robert Downey Jr., it can't be all bad. I'm sure we'll see plenty of Holmes' brilliance in the movie, the trailer is just supposed to be a catch

Former WWF Superstar Kurgan swinging a giant hammer at the sidekick from Back to School! Sign me up!

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are both pretty hot. The Sherlock Homes era is hot. That chick in the corset doesn't look too bad either. I think it will be eye candy at the very least, and honestly, I love eye candy. It looks like a great update for the franchise, the way that seems popular these days.

@7

How about you just stay in and read 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' then, and we'll all enjoy the movie?

And far be it from me to point out your spelling errors, but it really does make it difficult for one to take your 'cerebral' argument seriously when you demonstrate the literacy level of a 12 year old.

There's no possible way to tell from a 2-minute trailer filled with 4-second snippets what other elements this film is going to contain. I agree with #12, if it clogs your bowels so bad to think of watching this, stay home and read a book. Me, I'll be consuming popcorn and, without a doubt, enjoying this with my family.

It isn't all that crazy to 'action up' Sherlock Holmes.

@12... you're my hero. I hate people like that.

Yeah, it does looks like a "fun one"

Trailers are sometimes the worst example of a film. Emphasis on explosions and sex that billboard the movie as something a monkey can scream and fling poo at. I sincerely doubt that even a mediocre director like Ritchie is going to scrap that Holmes is a genius and not give us a genuine mystery. Have some faith if that's your fault with this.

That being said, it looks like shit.

@ #6,

I think HOUSE is based on Sherlock Holmes, oddly enough. I think they have the same address. 1492?

And. . . you know. .. opiate addictions.

Was that fisticuffs at 1:08?

@13

DONT EAT POPCORN AT FRIGGIN MOVIES. ITS CRUNCHY AND LOUD DONT YA KNOW. ANNOYING. AT LEAST CHEW WITH YOUR MOUTH CLOSED. AND THAT FIRST BITE COUNTS. PUT THE POPCORN INTO YOUR MOTH, AND BEFORE YOU CRUNCH DOWN THE FIRST TIME, CLOSE YOUR LIPS. THEN MUNCH AWAY.

GOD WHY DID POPCORN BECOME MOVIE FOOD WHEN WE'RE EXPECTED TO SHUT OFF CELL PHONES AND NOT TALK AND ALL THAT STUFF.

@6 & 8
HOUSE is based off HOLMES. ( Watson - Wilson, 1492 as the address, drug addiction, very observant genius, etc. )
So yeah, Laurie and Downey are both pretty much playing that specific character as it is written in the books.
@7 You are so wrong I don't know where to begin...

@21

CAPLOCK is more annoying than crunching popcorn will ever be.

Judging on the trailer and to be honest. . . This Sherlock Holmes movie could be the 2009 Star Trek of the Sherlock Holmes movies.Very promising!

i love 25 response.

i like money.

@18

The last line made snort.

Definitely fun! I will be there and I will be eating my popcorn really loudly and making that annoying squeaky sound with my straw by moving it up and down to avoid the ice.

@28, and you wonder why youre fat. shut your cell phone off and shut your mouth. nobody wants to hear you chewing louder than you would normally talk. what a jack@$$

I hope they emphasise his addiction to cocaine, as I don't think Holmes could have solved any of his cases without it. Like the 'Blue Carbuncle', where Holmes had to figure out who had lost a goose. They should make that into a film. Throw some titties into that plot and you have a movie. Clint Eastwood can direct.

Pretty Sure I saw a cart chase with a power sliding horse buggy. Nice. That being said, I think it looks pretty good. Of course they show a ton of action in the preview. Like so many have said above, It's the hook. There will be more intellectual previews too, they have to cater to everyone though.

I'll see it.

Other than the accents, swagger, athleticism, explosions, and mood of the film, this seems like a perfect adaptation!

It does look fun. Yet, I'm getting a very distinct "Wild Wild West" feeling.

casting RDJ might be the worst casting of all time, but I guess i'll see it anyway.

Looks like it will be a fun steampunk movie for itself (and Robert Downey Jr is pretty hot), although I wish they'd not used the Sherlock Holmes name for it. Doesn't really look like it.

Two words: Shanghai Knights.

Another two words: Dog Shit.

Wait... wait. A hero praised for his brainpower is now an action hero? Hurray I guess!
