May 14 2009Original Star Trek Given Extraneous Illumination Overhaul
I hope no one here was planning on making old Star Trek look like new Star Trek, because someone has put up a YouTube video called "i made old star trek look like new star trek," and they've pretty successfully done just that. The secret? Lens flares:
(via BWE)
It would have been nice if they could have shoehorned in a really sweet car, too, but well done.

I think even J.J. would like that spoof. He has said he overdid the lens flares. Either way, awesome movie.

LENS FLARES - the cause and solution of all design-based problems in life.

I didnt both me at all to be honest. Some people were hating on the overused flares but I didnt really notice it. When outside the ship it just looked like light from phasers and such and whenever inside the ship I thought it was just the bright com panels and lights and what not.
People bitch about too much these days...they sound like my mom. Just chill.

I just assumed the lens flares in the new movie were an homage to Gene L Coon, who was a big part of the first 2 years of Star Trek (invented Klingons, he did). How is lens flare an homage? (I hear you ask...)
Gene L Coon was also one of the co-creators and producers of the original Kung Fu TV series in the 70's, which made copious use of lens flare (usually with the sun as light source).
Oh, yeah. I PWN geekdom!!!

Oh, so close, but he missed the mark!
The LENS FLARES were only one aspect that was visually distracting.
Let us never forget the incessant spinning/rotating CGI models that prevented anyone from seeing how anything really looked. The very opening shot of the Kelvan was upside down and spinning. Almost in every shot, the ships tumble, roll, spin, and otherwise exemplify the concept of "whirlygig."
Both were signs of folks in the special effects department with too much time on their hands.

There was one scene in TOS that really did have lens flares: In the episode "Bread and Circuses," after Septimus tells Kirk, "Blessed Be The Sun," there is a nice shot of Kirk and Spock and Flavius walking with the Sun directly overhead.
