May 1 2009Here Comes a 'Death Note' Movie

death-note.jpg

Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to Death Note, the manga series about a magical, convenient method of murder-by-Post-It. Live-action adaptation time! From Variety:

Story centers on a college student who accidentally finds a misplaced "death note," infusing him with the power to kill merely by writing anyone's name on the page while picturing the person in his mind.

The 13-volume manga is a bestseller in Japan, and the film will be drawn from the first three installments, written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata for Shueisha Inc.

Which is going to make fans angrier: when Zac Efron is cast in the lead or when the physical notes are changes to text messages?

Which is going to make fans angrier: when Zac Efron is cast in the lead or when the physical notes are changes to text messages?

HA! PERFECT.

oh god. there's already a group of people that get together once a week to watch the Japanese version on my campus, this is going to be so much more unbearable when i can understand the cheezyness coming from the TV

I'm not familiar... is the blue demon next to (soon to be Zac Efron) one of the main characters?

already made a live action: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0810827/

and a sequel: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0912597/

add english overdub and CHA-CHING!

Yes, he is the shinigami "angel of death" who "lost" the death note in the real world. He is bound to the book and has to stay with the kid. I watched the anime in its entirety and it, like all anime, is exaggerative, but has a powerful narrative. I

Oh man, I'm not even a big fan and those changes irritate me...
Please Hollywood, leave something good and pure and the world (b/c good and pure has always equaled Death Note...)

For some reason I see Mel Gibson playing the demon...

They already made several (3 I believe?) live-action films, not all of them so fabulous.
As a huge Death Note fan, the thing about the Hollywood version that bothers me most is actually how they're going to handle Misa, because she'd be easiest to screw up x_x
I'm actually behind casting Zac Efron....hell, the resemblance is uncanny.

If they can manage to do it correctly than sweet, but my money is on this being another fan killer like the Eragon movie

I still hurt from that...

Too bad he's not college-age, because Cillian Murphy would be perfect for the lead. He's great at playing psychopaths. =)

There are already 3 movies out. You can go to Amazon and buy them. The movies are all subtitled and are AWESOME as HELL!

I'm actually most excited to hear the Alessandro Juliani english language dub of the L Change The World movie because apparently he does cosplay as L in it. And he's adorable.

I'd love to see Zac Efron as Light though. That would be so hilarious. I bet he could pull off antisocial psychopath.

fuck...

Oh yay an actual deathnote movie eww if zac efron is light i will burn all deathnote realated things i own

Actually, Cillian Murphy would probably make a good L...

Could the world handle Zac Efron vs Cillian Murphy? O_o

omg i have been waiting fpor this moment like forever....
if zac efron doesnt get the part... then i dont know.. i just hope, they dont screw up and take somebody who looks nothing like light...
and L has to be like L in the manga.....
and i dont thing cillian murphy is good for L or for Light...

Steve Buscemi for Weird Blue Thing?

Instead of writing and picturing the person in mind, wouldn't it more easy to shoot the person? It sounds a bit complicated to me.

That creature on the right got probably once shot by a bazooka.

Yeah ok i got over the Zac Efron bit because well....yeah the likeness is uncanny and by the end of the series i'm pretty sure Light loved himself as much as Zac does now, but come on
TEXT MESSAGES!?
Kill me now.
This is gearing up to become my MTV-raised-sister's favorite movie. Soon popular kids will start liking anime and the world will most likely explode.

Their are already live action death note movies in Japan, their not that bad... But I wouldent watch an american remake of it even if I do like the manga... I hope if they do make it they do it justice. Its a good series.

YAAAY! i hope its less cheesy than the japanese films, where they kept having overdramatic heart attacks. good times

+1 for Steve Buscemi as Ryuk

I liked the Japanese films, but I really don't think that (despite appearances) Zac Effron would make a convincing Light Yagami. His smiling isn't creepy enough. In my opinion, they need somebody who could emulate the character that was brought to life by Miyano Mamoru in the Japanese version of the anime. If they do that, I'll be fine with it.

i think this story line is so creative...i enjoyed the first season...i would recommend this to anyone, even if you don't like anime...the story was deep, just with all of the implications and collateral damage from using the deathnote...i liked the japanese opening theme song too, I almost had it memorized-very catchy

Anime is just flat out gay. All of it. Blow my meat log fags.

@ 27.

your a fuck wit, anime is a ton better than the shithouse american sitcoms on tv now.

Steve Buscemi as ryuk FTW!!!

I just have this awful feeling that when this comes out it will be turned into senseless drivel. Please please please do not cast Zac Efron and then turn it into a musical. Although the idea of a singing Light is slightly amusing, in reality it would turn my stomach.

i cant wait till Yun-Fat Chow shows up as the ugly blue angel of death monster wearing sunglasses and a Hawaiian tourist shirt.

Dillon Doe....just like someone else said...you're a fuckin idiot. Anime is much much better than any of that bullshit shown on tv over here in America.

If you knew anything about anything then you would be retracting your statement.

I just hope for everyone's sake that is never going to happen... There are already Death Notes movie(s), so I hope they don't freakin' dare to do it. I'll kill them all!

gh crap. america sucks for movies now. always REMAKING some other country's popular film. america has run out of material. fuck.

ooooooo cilian murphy would be PERFECT! i love him and want to engage him in sex! lots of it.

but if i had to choose bt zac efron and chase crawford over looks, i'd pick chase. definitely NOT for his acting though. well...maybe because light is kind of easy to play.

misa: i hope they don't pick any relevant asian girls (currently in anything right now...like that girl from dball). it'd just screw it up, esp since i'd hate to see a cutesy asian girl with a retard white guy (no offense but just doesn't look good onscreen...i'm asian i would know). none of the disney kids please. taylor momsen...probably a bad choice but she's the perfect age and look.

americans directing an asian based movie NO GOOD. ahh i can see total butchery.

Nobody can please a fanboy, I respect the manga and I know nothing short of awesome would make me believe in a Hollywood remake.

Don't deny it, Zack Efron was the idea of most of the posters here when it came to the Raito role.... plus as a movie producer during recession, I would cast someone who guarantees I get my cash back, and Zaccie Effeminate is the "it" girl right now

The two live action Japanese movies are awful.
I can't see this being worse.

by making an Americian version, this movie is already ruined :'(

Ugh, I tried to give this series a try, but there are no redeeming parts about it. Overdramatic, horrible premise, I write your name in a book and you die. Well I'll clean up the underworld then. Oh but now I have to ponder the meaning of my actions... lame.

Cliche characters and animation. Why does every anime character have to look 1 of 5 or 6 different ways. Here we have the overused japanese emo teenager... lame.

Anime gets a bad wrap because of shows like Deathnote and Inuyasha... well that and all the fat twelve-year-olds clogging up the aisles at every Borders. Buy your little book or go home. Don't sit in the aisles and block my romance novels all the fucking time! I needs me some hot highlander action before I sleep at night.

I closing, Fuck you Efron.

I'm going to go with the follwoing for casting, and hear me out before you light me up like a christmas tree.

Light-Haley Joel Osment
he has a certain creepyness to him, and he is age appropriate.

Misa-amanda bynes
She is a little old, granted, but she can be made to look younger. Despite some of her stupic ditsy roles, she has an evil sense of humor and a subtle intellect that when she interviews tells me that she plays dumb but really isn't , kind of like jenny mccarthy. If you saw "shes the man" she could easily be light,, or L.

ryuk-christopher walken
I think this stands on its own. I would like to see some of his jewely switched out to be cow bells.

chief yagami- Henry rollins
He has the ability to present himself as an unbelievable law and order hardcase. He woudl sharply contrast the L character and light very strongly. Forget how bad he sucked in some of his other movies. Link about him in the context of his spoken word performances or his awsome stand up. or youtube, and open letter to ann coulter. YOU WILL THANK ME FOR THIS>

L- Hugh lorie (preparing myself for angry rebuttal)
who is L,, L is sherlock holmes with advanced assbergers syndrome. Though hugh lorie is NOT age appropriate, he (as house) is the first thing I think of.
socially awkward, brilliant diagnostic delivery, more interested in doing good as it is his source of amusement rather then it just being for goods sake .
Cilian Murphy is a great thought but I just can't deal with his weird face. I mena no offense to him and he did a outstanding job as the scarecrow but he just ins't right for that part.

That said, when I watched DN for the first time, it blew me away with its depth of story. cartoon network did well by scoring this one.

note: soundtrack.
The music used for the opening and closing of first and second half of the series was unbelivable. normally animated features don't have something that ballsy with some exceptions. I fully expect any soundtrack they make for this movie to be just as good. If rammstein is not used, I will die a little inside.

I already knew they were planning on this for a LONG time. Pick up a copy of AnimeInsider from a few months ago, and you're likely to find it somewhere in the fanletters among a few copies. And it's pretty inevitable that Effron will be playing Light. Although I really cant stand Effron (or anyone affiliated with anything HSM or similar works), he really does look too much like Light. I'll still see it even if he is in it, for a couple of reasons.
1) I want to see how badly Hollywood screws it up
2) I anticipate seeing little peppy middleschoolers with their "I Heart Troy" gear go nuts when they see how demented Light is and if they end up doing more, I cant wait to see how they react with the end of the story. Wont spoil it, but if you're a DN fan you should probably know what I mean

Does WB typically even do darker stuff like this? Harry Potter is probably the darkest thing I can think of that WB has done. I mean, I'm surprised Rogue hasn't grabbed it. I feel they would do better.

Oh well, exciting nonetheless. Cant wait to see the previews!

...replace the notebook...with...uh idk DeathTwitter
Kill anyone who gets in your way...in 140 characters or less

at 37 and 40 - LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate to say it, but the idea of Zac Efron as Light....well, he MIGHT be able to pull it off. If he can get the narcissistic bastard thing down, and the God complex, then he could probably do it. He's already got the looks, just change the eye color.

Crutchmold....I love you. You said Hugh Laurie should play L. The minute you said that, an idea sprung to mind of him crouching on the floor, with baggy jeans and a white t-shirt, holding a bowl of ice cream slathered in chocolate syrup or something. You're right, he does have the character for it, and, age aside, I think he'd be perfect. You know, maybe with some makeup...

Anyway, the whole of DN movie in America pleases me, and Zac playing Light...well, I'm curious. :) We'll just have to wait and see!

Honestly, I don't favor the idea of Zac Effron playing light Yagami. I will damn WB and DN to hell if they continue to consider Zac Effron. The guy is just too "Happy Go-lucky" for the movie. I can see DN turning into a lame Musical. I could care less for the rest of the cast. Just please, No Zac Effron. Despite his very close resemblence to Light, Zac effron is well...Gay. I know, there is a matter of "Percepective" here, but I just need to let this off my chest and say that Zac effron is not fit for this. He should stick to disney and stay there.

megusta muco la serie y los videos de la pelicula estan chidos

suuuuper chidos los videos

I hope they are going to make a death note movie, that will be awsome. BUT!!!! it will be dissapointing, if this movie is going to be like the dragon ball z move that has been released recently, that was a dissapointing movie. BAD STUFF!!!!

@ 37

Wow you fail. Death Note is the most well constructed anime I have ever seen. I don't exactly know what you the hell you are talking about saying "overdramatic" and "horrible premise". but imo you just didn't give it a chance from the start. I can clearly see how much serious effort and thought was put into making the anime. There are so many clever ideas and twists in the plot...so many OMG!!! moments... And given its about uh death, and the creation of a new world.. I don't exactly see the "overdramatic" qualities that you do...nor the "horrible premise" because I try take things past just face value...yea when you put it the way you do the idea seems too simple, but thats because youve missed all of the detail that gives it its real quality... either give it another try (assuming that it was the anime you watched..the manga is admitedly not as good) or go watch the Magic School Bus or something.

I agree w/ 47.

37, you really just seem to be against it for some reason. Death note is not about "Feelings" or "Love" or "How come the cute guy in high school doesn't like me?" it's about two geniuses risking their lives to outsmart each other.

It's one of the most well executed mangas/anime I have ever read/watched. The plot is amazingly detailed, and is what I would call "Perfect", no loopholes, just perfect.

Oh, and for the record; I kinda of both want to see Efron play Light, and not play Light at the same time.

Efron being Light = A BIG FAT NO-NO.
but that being said, wouldn't it be hilarious to see him do it?

c'mon now hollywood have u really sunk so low and ran outta material that you have to ruin not 1 but 2 animes (DBZ and death note) with ur gay movie version i think this ur way of getting back at the japanese 4 pearl harbor nd ur doin a damn well job putting zac efron AKA faggot in this movie congratulations on yet another job well fucked up

i think that code geass is definitely up there with death note in terms of how well nd in depth the plot was put together they are both brilliant pieces of work. Yea i definitely got of topic lmafo. feel free to argue.

text messaging...really? when will it end. whats next space ships? i wouldn't be surprised if a pokemon came outta nowhere in the middle of this movie lol

Haha Light would throw the ball and Ryuk would come out all pissed.
As for the character selection I really am not in favor for the lead whatsoever, the idea sickens me that first of all "Warner Bros"? Come on just from that I can tell that they would butcher the movie. Then you have these character ideas they throw out, Without a doubt unless you like the idea of a happy texting singing Light you will have something negative to say.
The show itself though..I thought it was one of the most unique anime around. Most other anime involve monsters and robots with guys with spikey hair swinging oversized swords. Deathnote brought the anime ideal to not only a whole other level but to the modern world

I'm not perfictly sure, but isn't there already 3 movies, of death note, live action. i think so.

you know... having zac efron be light isnt so bad... i mean.. we can watch zac efron get shot and die!!
