May 26 2009Different Buffy to Slay Newer Vampires
1992's Buffy the Vampire Slayer marked the arrival of the former Roseanne and Parenthood writer, now television geek demigod, Joss Whedon, and spawned the Sarah Michelle Gellar series that would become a cult phenomenon to be gushed about in the pages of Entertainment Weeklies for years to follow. Attempting to remake the film without Whedon's participation would clearly be a flagrantly bad idea, and thus, that is what's we're going to do:
A new incarnation of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" could be coming to the big screen."Buffy" creator Joss Whedon isn't involved and it's not set up at a studio, but Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, on what is being labeled a remake or relaunch, but not a sequel or prequel.
The new "Buffy" film, however, would have no connection to the TV series, nor would it use popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike. Vertigo and Kuzui are looking to restart the story line without trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon, putting the parties in a similar situation faced by Paramount, J.J. Abrams and his crew when relaunching "Star Trek."
The masses of fanatical Joss Whedon followers will not be pleased. Fran and Kaz Kuzui, I suggest you plant a rumor that there's a lost episode of Firefly hidden somewhere inside the internet and use the resulting panic and distraction to get away. These Whedon superfans are already pretty riled up by the poor ratings and near-cancellation of Dollhouse paired with all their friends' reluctance to sit down and watch Serenity. They don't need to hear this right now. You've made a mistake. Escape while you can.

This can't end well.

his really is just a big dumb money-related decision that would jizz all over what Joss Whedon took 7 years to rebuild. Fuck the Kuzui's... at least wait 15 or 20 years to restart it WITH the characters intact. If they're gonna make a movie now, why not just use the same cast and continue the story?

I'm a pretty big Whedon geek, but this news doesn't bother me in the slightest. Don't get me wrong, it's a terrible idea, but it's hard to get up in arms when MTV wants to remake The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the director of Blade wants to remake The Crow. You just get numb to the idiocy after a while.

All I know is Serenity was a shitpile so by association i'm going to assume everything and everyone else referenced in this article is too.

This is all bad. Bad bad bad. The only good buffy related material was the stuff that Kuzui did not touch.
Now if Joss himself were to direct a buffy, angel, or spike movie... that would be different.

The continued creative bankruptcy of hollywood is really getting old. A remake of a movie from the 90s? The 90s! Remakes of movies that are at least 40-50 years old I can sort of understand, but from the previous decade? What's next? "Hey, let's do a remake of the Dark Knight! That movie is like totally ancient now! Ka-ching!"

I can only hope that on the day this film premieres, everyone involved gets butt raped. Only then will justice be served.

What really frustrates me about this is that it will really ruin things for all of us genuine Buffy fans. I've been a fan of the series for many years, I have all of the seasons, comics, a bunch of the action figures, and I even have Buffy tattoos. I'm still holding out for a real movie with the original cast, but if this piece of shit gets made then there will be no more hope for it. I will really be bummed if this comes out.

No, don't you get it? It's a metaphor - vampires suck the life out of the living. Hollywood sucks the life out of the talented. (So at least the Kuzuis are safe!)
"Ho hum, we've done nothing for years and years except collect residuals from someone else's abilities and talents. Wait, what? Vampires are cool again because of twilight? Throw something together with that old Buffy thing we don't care about and haven't looked at in forever--THAT should be some easy money!"

The original buffy film was awful, it wasn't what Joss wanted, he had to make an entire tv series to correct the fuck up of that film.
Fran Rubel Kuzui is a TERRIBLE director.
this is very upsetting.

Honestly? I tried watching the first season of the show and thought "this seems silly, and the dialogue is obnoxious, why the hell does everyone love it so much?"
So you know, whatever, I guess.

Don't know how this is going to work out. Hmm... Well, it won't be as good as Twilight. Seriously, nothing beats Edward. Did you hear about how well Twilight's DVD sales are supposed to be? http://www.iheartvampires.net/?p=312
Check it out on iheartvampires.net
