Apr 8 2009'Umbrella Academy' Comic Become 'Umbrella Academy' Movie, Of Course
Umbrella Academy, the Gerard Way-created, Eisner Award-winning comic I long resisted reading entirely because it was created by My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way, is headed for movie town:
Universal Pictures is planning to make "Umbrella Academy" the first project to come out of its three-year production pact with Dark Horse Comics. Mark Bomback, who wrote Disney's "Race to Witch Mountain," has been tapped to pen the adaptation of the book series, created by Gerard Way, the lead singer of band My Chemical Romance."Umbrella Academy," which bowed in 2007 and spawned a second series, revolves around a disbanded group of seven superheroes who reunite after the death of their adoptive father, an alien disguised as a famous entrepreneur, and carry out his plan to save the world.
We'll see how audiences only marginally embraced Hellboy will respond to a stylized world with a talking chimp, time traveling child, and a man with his head steampunk-fitted to a gorilla body. I'm guessing not that well, but good luck Race to Witch Mountain Writer.

What I don't like are the negative responses to this due to the fact that the creator is someone from a band not too many people are fond of (not in particular related to this site... yet). Just because someone is bad at one thing doesn't make them bad at another (not counting Uwe Boll). Gerard actually wanted to be in the comic business way before MCR came about. He does all of his album art which, if you like the music or not, you can't say is bad. Why doubt his story telling? I don't know much about the Eisner Award but... wouldn't that indicate that it's, according to a majority consensus, a GOOD comic?
Maybe the movie will suck but just because its by "The guy from MCR" doesn't automatically mean so.

Second series of UMBRELLA - not so hot compared to first. I've followed this book mostly because of the art by Gabriel Ba; to the credit of the book and this adaptation, at least UMBRELLA ACADEMY is probably going to be ruined, not CASANOVA (created and drawn by Ba and Fabio Moon), which is better written and more interesting by far.

@ Tom: It's not so much that MCR is bad, it's that it presents such a priggish, self-important, martyr-complex world view. Unless that's a completely insincere facade, it's hard to imagine Gerard not infusing his narratives with the same insufferable tone. More respectable writers than he have let their egos and opinions pollute their creative output.
@ Ms. Anthrope: If fuckability translated into creative talent, Jessica Simspon would have a lot more critical awards.
