Apr 10 2009'Moon' Trailer: Space Madness Done the Right Way

moon-trailer.jpg

Has there ever been a time when a small or solo crew of workers sent into a close-quarters space vessel has not started experiencing terrifying, unexplainable phenomena that's either all in their head or real, crazy alien stuff? Even Ren and Stimpy could not escape the inevitable mind-horrors of deep space. You'd think it would be part of fictional NASA's training by now. Moon, starring Sam Rockwell, revisits the concept yet again, but luckily steers its lunar excursion vehicle closer to the elegant Solaris model than the Event Horizon/Whater-That-New-One-With-Dennis-Quaid-Is-Called bullshit model. Or at least it seems to from the trailer:

Never take me to space.

ren & stimpy flashbacks ensue

Not First.

That actually looks pretty good.

looks like a lame version of 2001

Cool, Sam Rockwell needs more play. And this movie looks to have great atmosphere and design.

Looks promising. Hopefully it wont disappoint like Sunshine did.

my coveted ice cream bar! *sigh* they just don't make cartoons like they used to ... is it just me or is the evil happy-face computer just like the one in Wall-E?
I mean, there's been all kinds of freaky computers but they have the same look.

I actually liked Sunshine....... plus this one is directed by David Bowie's son, Im sure he knows all about outer space from his dad.......

great, so the twist is revealed in the trailer.... Sam Rockwell is a clone, and the two remaining weeks separate him from his death, meaning he'll be then replaced by another clone... Stupid Hollywood executives, how are we supposed to be surprised by the film after such a douchebag trailer????

the flick looks nice though....

That looks awesome, and other than the whole space thing, I don't think it looks much like 2001.

@3....this looks NOTHINGGGGG like 2001....maybe you should go watch 2001 again to refresh your memory.

I think this film looks great! I love depressing, dark, sci-fi thirller stuff and this fits the bill it seems. Sunshine was amazing but it did have its occasional quirks but nothing that really ruined the film for me.

I will be first in line when this comes out :)

@5 -- AGREED!

Sci Fi represent! Best genre ever! Can't wait to see this, and the new Star Trek, and Terminator.

the emoticon dave definitely makes it feel 2001ish none the less it still looks lame

I loved Sunshine as well actually. This looks excellent.

So cause there is a talking computer its now like 2001? So any film now with a talking computer is like 2001? You're a dork dude.

lame

#8 is awesome.

And it looks more like Silent Running than 2001.

I agree with clones #8 and #9.

I saw this at SXSW and it was pretty awesome. One of my favorite films of the festival besides Winnebago Man.

sam rockwell is genius...

but you know what you got to watch out for on the moon? DICK DONUTS (hilarious)

That's gotta be Kevin Spacey as the robot.

This looks fucking brilliant - I also applaud klayklay's observation.

"So cause there is a talking computer its now like 2001? So any film now with a talking computer is like 2001?"

Nooooooo. But a computer with almost the same voice and affect as HAL who always addresses a lone, paranoid astronaut by his first name is a bit reminiscent, yes.

@klayklay: if he's a clone, why would they kill him off and replace him at all? Or make him think he has a family so that he desperately wants to leave?

Whether you want to call them 'references', 'homages' or 'rip-offs', the parallels to 2001 are definitely there.

The computer, as already discussed, is the most obvious. However, in the closing moment of the trailer there is a shot of, presumably Rockwell, with colored light flowing behind his head. VERY similar to the 'journey' Dave takes at the end of 2001. Also, the final title is essentially the opening 2001 shot flipped upside down.

Also the interiors are very similar. Check out the blue-lit octagonal hallway in the preview and compare it to the hallway Dave walks down when he return to the ship through the airlock in 2001.

You do know that Kubrick based his set & model designs in 2001 on what ACTUAL NASA EQUIPMENT was going to look like in the future according to NASA's industrial engineers? More of a testament to Kubrick's ability to utlize actual science in his film that someone 40 years later "rippign him off". There's only so many practical ways to build a hallway in space for god's sake. You want variety, go talk to Geiger.

WHY WOULD YOU GIVE IT AWAY LIKE THAT!!! My god these people are too stupid to be making so much money.

@Frank

They probably have some lame three week lifespan and the family gives them purpose, your boiler plate clone stuff. Or maybe hes going crazy and he just dies there and has some wierd last second of life flashback thing that they're editing into this clone non-sense. Either way I'm gonna watch it.

I've always loved Sammy. Green Mile, my fav movie of him, bare none. Well, except for Moon. Can't wait to see it. The whole Solaris, "what's real" thingy is overdone, but my boy Sammy can give it a revamp. (You're gonna ride the lightning!)

Put some stink on it!
