Apr 20 2009Here's Russell Crowe as 'Robin Hood'
Oh, good, he has the exact haircut and beard of Gladiator Man. Now I can watch the two films back to back and pretend it's all one long, nonsensical narrative. Dreams are coming true.
First look: New Robin Hood on point with 'Gladiator' [USA Today]

Robin hood = awesome
2. BadCopNoDonut - April 20, 2009 11:38 AM
Sweet. I've always thought Robin Hood should be portrayed as a short-tempered Australian man. Can't wait to see the Sheriff of Nottingham get a telephone to the face!
3. ashleigh - April 20, 2009 11:47 AM
hmmm...i feel like robin hood is supposed to look younger than this. and significantly less bloated.
4. Bridgid - April 20, 2009 12:23 PM
Geeze he looks mighty fine to me. I can't wait to see this film. I think its about time we have a proper rendition of Robin Hood without the tights and feathered caps. In the hands of Sir Ridley and Crowe, we are in for a treat.

Yes, FINALLY a Robin Hood movie without tights! (This statement only applies if you've seen no movies or TV for the last 30 years, but hey, go with it!)
And yes, it's high time SOMEONE took all the magic, fun, and coolness out of the Robin Hood legend. Just make him an average guy, slightly overweight, with a bad haircut. THAT'S entertainment! And something we can ALL relate to. I just hope this movie is as good as "Sir" Ridley's last movie!
PS Can't wait for the video game!
6. Dr. - April 20, 2009 12:43 PM
I hope Costner makes a cameo.
7. Anon - April 20, 2009 12:43 PM
At least this Robin Hood won't have an American accent.
Still not South Yorkshire or even English but Australian is closer.
8. Hugh Jackman - April 20, 2009 12:49 PM
Russell Crowe has an accent?
9. Nicole Kidman - April 20, 2009 12:50 PM
Russell Crowe has an accent?
10. Mel Gibson - April 20, 2009 12:51 PM
What sort of an accent? I was drinking and not paying that much attention to him.
11. Anon - April 20, 2009 12:51 PM
#8 and #9
brilliant.
I actually laughed out loud when I seen you names.
12. Anon - April 20, 2009 12:52 PM
oh and #10 as well.
But you have to stop soon.
There aren't that many famous Aussies.
13. Layne - April 20, 2009 12:53 PM
All of you who are referring to Russell as still overweight or bloated-
I think some glasses or contacts are in order. Or have you been watching movies with guys like Zac Efron and Robert Pattinson so much, you've forgotten what a real man looks like? Crowe is hot!
14. Bridgid - April 20, 2009 12:59 PM
I'm with Layne on this. He looks better than ever and there is something very sexy about a fine looking bloke in medievil attire. Add that to a great script and all I can say is , be still my beating heart
15. Atonia - April 20, 2009 1:13 PM
Forget everything you thought you knew about Robin Hood...something new is coming our way and I can't wait. This will not be a campy rendition of the forest dweller that we've seen in the past. Russell as Robin is going to be different. I love the look in the picture. What bloat he's a fine honed specimen of a MAN.
16. Cate Blanchett - April 20, 2009 1:17 PM
Wait.... Russell Crowe has an accent?
17. Beej - April 20, 2009 1:47 PM
Russell has lost around 77 pounds or more since he made State of Play. I think the word 'bloat' is a bit much. He's almost back to his normal weight, maybe just another 7 pounds to go. I can't see that he is too old to play Robin. I don't think that he was running round Sherwood in his twenties, he'd been off fighting, so would have been a man in his prime. At 45, Russell is a man in his prime. He's probably the best actor of our time, no matter what weight he is, and he only gains weight for roles, not because he can't be bothered. Judge him on his performance, not on what he looks like.
18. BadCopNoDonut - April 20, 2009 2:02 PM
I prefer to judge him on his alcohol-fueled offscreen tantrums.
19. DreamFolder - April 20, 2009 2:23 PM
Crowe would make a better Will Scarlet.
20. TetterkeT - April 20, 2009 2:59 PM
I didn't know they wore Levi's back then...?
21. Me - April 20, 2009 3:15 PM
who in the hell picked him to be Robin Hood?
22. Lolocaust - April 20, 2009 3:23 PM
Move over, fatty.
The real news here is clearly that Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea is going to be in the movie.
23. STINK - April 20, 2009 3:47 PM
I hope Daffy Duck makes a cameo.
24. Charlie Caligula - April 20, 2009 4:12 PM
I guess I missed the part where the interesting part of this concept, the Sheriff of Nottingham is the good guy, got ripped out of the equation for another Robin Hood rehash?
25. jaime - April 20, 2009 5:20 PM
fuck, i saw him and i thought i was watching gladiator!
change his style a bit people!
26. mythmaker - April 21, 2009 1:07 AM
Bridgid and Atonia (and others) - hate to break it to you, but there have been numerous non-campy versions of Robin Hood. That said, putting someone in more "normal- looking" clothes does not make it more authentic. I notice Crowe is holding a bow. How campy. Why can't they do the REAL version of Robin Hood WITHOUT all the bows and arrows?
Yeah. Unless you were alive back then or personally knew Robin Hood I don't think you can really purport to know the "real" story.
@24 - Word. That would've been interesting.
27. Nero - April 21, 2009 9:47 AM
I guess he took the role because of the tights.
28. Shannon - April 21, 2009 11:24 AM
Uhhh.. bloated? He's about his Gladiator size, and that was hawt!
29. SirRon - December 16, 2009 2:49 PM
The skinny guys club, is for the feminine side of man. I for one say " you can't drive a spike with a tack hammer "
