Feb 16 2009'Wolverine' TV Spot Addresses Key Bone Claw Issues

wolverine-bone-claws.jpg

The last Wolverine trailer sparked a huge controversy among people questioning if Wolverine originally had bone claws, those who answered he definitely did have bone claws, others who facetiously questioned if he had bone claws, and the angry people who didn't understand the sarcasm in the prior group's comments and felt they had to reassert that Wolverine did have bone claws. This new TV spot is either going to clear all that up or make the comments page go like this.

So it appears he had some sort of ivory hand tusks as a child. I hope we can move on now.

i'm waiting with baited breath. meaning: i been munching on your moms cooch.

Uhh... liev schreiber is supposed to be Beast, right? can someone explain this to a non-x-men junkie.

You'd better be careful, you'll lose the important ~30 year old dorky male demographic if you make fun of FF4. Stick to mocking FF7, that ~25 year old bracket is much more resilient to abuse.

Daniel,

I believe Liev is playing Sabertooth.

That is all.

Bye

I may be mistaken, but I believe that, according to X-Men canon, Wolverine originally only had the ability to regenerate, which made it possible for the Weapon X experimenters or whoever to replace his skeleton with the adamantite one, which included the claws. However, there was a point in the comics when Wolverine had his adamantite skeleton ripped out of his body by Magneto; he nearly died, but recovered with his regenerative abilities and when he got better he had a regular skeleton, and his claws were made of bone. That was during adulthood, though.

Bone?

Aren't his claws made of some sort of metal? Like aluminium?

Schreiber is Sabretooth, not Beast.

in the mini-series from 2001 called Origin (which is all about wolverine's origins), he did have bone claws before he got the adamantium....

and Liev is playing Sabertooth.

and Liev is playing Sabertooth, Wolverine's father?? wtf?

I don't get the controversy here. Wolverine has always had Bone Claws underneath the Adamantium. They first showed up I think in the 80's or early 90's when Magneto ripped the metal from Wolverine and the claws were bone underneath and it was continued upon in that 2001 Origins comic.

I also wanted to say that Sabertooth and Wolverine are brothers, they have the same father.

So then does Sabertooth have bone claws? And is he the guy that hangs out with Kazar?

Sabretooth has bone-claws. The other kid towards the end is probably Logan/Wolverine, not the kid with the bone claws, as Wolverine and Sabretooth are brothers. Logan goes under surgery to get the metal stuff.

C'mon guys, I don't even read comics and I know this shit.

Wolverine never had bone claws he adapted to them when he went wild after magneto ripped out his metal. The second is correct they are brothers. Looks like a good movie but that's the first thing I've seen that's not correct.

If Wolverine got cancer he couldn't get bone marrow transplants because the needles would break on the adamantium. I think that's sad.

Clearly Liev is playing Beast, thus all of the blue fur. This is also why he is Kelsey Grammer.

Also: this preview needs more Shiva. And Silver Fox.

Gotta love a character whose recurring role virtually every storyline she's in is: "gets raped and killed by Sabretooth, then Logan/Wolverine/etc. tearfully buries her by a cabin, swears revenge on Sabretooth."

Further: I am a big dork for knowing this.

ok yes James/Logan has always had bone claws. Weapon X augmented them with adumantium, they were able to do this because of his healing ability, which also causes memory loss. BUT in the comics at least Sabertooth was not James/Logans brother, his name was Dog and was killed later on when logan fought him in Alaska. he ran off with a GIRL not his half brother.

probably not going to see this one in theaters...

In case my previous post gave the wrong impression: this movie looks terrible. Absolutely awful. And I read the comics back in the day, still have 'em all, so I think quoting Comic Book Guy is appropriate: Worst. Movie. Ever.

And yet, I am pretty sure I will be dragged kicking and screaming to the theater to see it. Much like I will probably be for Transformers 2. Much like I was for Transformers 1.

in the origins comic they showed wolverine had bone claws. in the comic when magneto ripped out his adamantium they said he had bones under the metal after all. even in marvel vs capcom 2 theres a bone claw version of wolverine.

I think the key thing to remember is that Xmen has always had alternate universe stories. That was always happening in the comics. People would die, people would turn bad, crazy shit would happen, but hazaa! It's just an alternate universe story. After the bullshit that was Xmen 3, I'm going with the idea that it and this film are just more alternate universes. just...like...the comics.

I will laugh my ass off when Bizzaro flys in to f*ck things up!

Sabertooth has always been trying to mess with Wolvie's mind. Wolverine is the soon of a southern 1800's land owner. He used to be asthmatic and allergic to pretty much everything, making him an outcast among rich kiddies. His only friend was the son of the grounds keeper, who was kinda reminiscent of Huck Finn. On night, the Grounds Keeper gets shit drunk and shoots Wolvie's parents. Wolvie freaks his tiny self out, grows claws and kills. He then left, trying to run away from his past.

His mutant power is Animalism. He gets claws. He gets heightened senses. He's also in damned fine physical condition. He doesn't regenerate per say but he heals very quickly, like any other animal. And he ages very slowly. Years later, around the 50's if I'm not mistaken, he gets involved with a special project to make him a super soldier. During his "treatment", his natural healing powers become exacerbated and give him his famed regeneration.

Later, during a big ol' confrontation with Magneto on his Asteroid Base, Magneto rips the metal from Wolvie's bones. The xmen take the minced meat mess back home. Wolvie survives but he's lost his powers. All but his claws. Everytime he pulls them out, the puncture wholes don't heal.

Through a wierd twist of fate, Wolvie's powers then become hyper stimulated. He's little more than a dog, brain-wise, but he's also stronger, faster, got better senses, huge claws, and lightning fast regeneration.

this is where my nerd powers wane. Sorry.

It's gonna make a ton of money. I wonder how the series will progress after this.

wait wait... I don't understand, I don't think. So, Liev Schrieber is playing Sabertooth, who turns into beast later in the series, I know that much, but when did beast become Logan's dad? Also, I always thought it was beast with the bone claws, and wolverine had the metal ones... So that guy that kills logans dad is really his real dad and then logan kills him while he's telling him that? when did he officially get the bone claws? Did Stryker put them in when he was a baby?

wait, can someone explain the bone claws? and who is playing Sabertooth? and who's brother is he?

Sabretooth becomes Beast? Beast has bone claws? Did Stryker give Logan bone claws???

I have a headache now.

Sabretooth is not Wolverine's father. There was, for a time, a lot of speculation over it, since Sabretooth sort of hinted at it and held it over Logan's head on numerous occasions.

Sabretooth and Beast are not, and never have been, the same person. Sabretooth is Victor Creed. Beast is Dr. Hank McCoy.

Sabretooth has claws, but they are not bone. They are his fingernails and are made of protein, just like a dog's claws.

Beast does not have claws, either. His power is hightened agility and an ape-like appearance. He got his blue fur when an experiment he was working on backfired, accelerating his mutant transformation. In more recent comics, he has become more feline-like in appearance, taking on the facial characteristics of a lion.

It was always thought that the Weapon X Program placed the bone claws inside of Wolverine when they laced hs skeleton with adamantium. However, when the X-Men had a showdown with Magneto on Avalon, his mutant satellite sanctuary, Magneto ripped the metal from Wolverine's bones. Later, when he popped his claws, it was found that he had bone claws as part of his skeleton. That was his mutation all along, in addition to his heightened senses and healing factor. True, Logan didn't know that he had metal claws when he was found by Alpha Flight, but at the time, he had amnesia and did not even know his name (which is actually James Howlett, not Logan). When the bone claws pop out of his hand following the confrontation with Magneto, he (and everyone else) is just as shocked as when he first popped his adamantium claws. Nobody knew that he had metal claws, because the adamantium had grafted onto his skeleton, which already contained his natural claws, which are made of bone.

Is that nerdy enough?

Wolverine has bone claws.

Wolverine's real name is James and NOT Logan? Damnnn

"Sabretooth has claws, but they are not bone. They are his fingernails and are made of protein, just like a dog's claws. "

My balls are chock full o protein too. No wonder all those whores keep dying on me. I knew it wasn't just the stench. Thanks cybertooth

Not to add to the confusion.....in the 80's X-men the story line "days of future past", we see the X-men making last stands against the sentinels. Colossus does a "fast ball" special with wolverine only to have his entire body vaporized leaving his gleaming skeleton behind showing clearly that he had implants in his forearms ie:the claws were not natural.

However, marvel is paying the bills, they can make his claws whatever they want them to be. (Just like the way the Enterprise is being built on the ground instead of in space WTF)

#30: Dude, it was the 80's. Wolverine's origin was written in the early 00's. Until they rewrite it, it's the closest to "the truth" that we can get. Crappy 80's "What if?" comics don't really hold much sway.

Besides, wasn't Wolvie stripped of his adamantium in the early 90's?

actually his claws are severed unicorn horns that were grafted on by nazis in world war 2. It's this unicorn magic that allows him to be in six places at once. And by places I mean titles.

it's as likely as the other dozen retconned histories he's been given. and it has unicorns and nazis so it's extra fun.
But in all seriousness, check wolverine's wikipedia entry. I collected his stupid series for years and didn't know he was originally supposed to be an ACTUAL wolverine that the high evolutionary made humanoid. That is frickin hilarious...

Now, could someone tell me about the bone claws and who sabersaw is? LOL!

Not clraw, clraw!

Tabian,

ok, I THINK I get it... I was right about Beast being Logan's father then?

Sully... just poke yourself in the eye.

Conclusion: Background stories for Marvel characters are retarded.

It's funny how they're playing up Sabretooth so much in this movie, considering that they offed him in the first movie without Wolverine ever recognizing who he was, and they never brought him back either (even though he should easily have survived that fall if he has Wolverine's healing powers).

Wolverine didn't originally have bone claws. The claws were given to him by the Weapon X project when he got his adamantium skeleton. It wasn't until Magneto ripped all of the adamantium out of him that Marvel decided ret-con Wolverine having bone claws because without claws all Wolverine could do was regenerate. If you look at every drawing of Wolverine before they came up with that bone claws crap, you'll see he has 3 openings on top of his hands specifically for the claws to come out of; and (even worse) Marvel themselves confirmed that the claws were implanted in 2 different editions of Marvel Universe back in the '80s.

sully: Sabertooth doesn't become Beast later on, they are two completely different characters.
Going by the movies, Sabertooth was the mindless henchman in the first movie, played by Tyler Mane, and Beast was the blue furred scientist played by Kelsey Grammer in the third movie.
And he is not, and has never been, Wolvie's father.

AwesomeXXX is correct, Wolvie didn't originally have bone claws when he was first created (re: character created in the '60s). They were added by the Weapon X program, or so everyone thought. But that changed later, and became canon when the Origins comic came out.

Oh yeah, Jon #15, Logan can't get cancer. His healing factor cures it instantly, which is why he is able to smoke, and he doesn't get drunk for very long because the healing factor pushes the 'toxin' out of him sobering him up.

What the FUCK is with those boned claws that Wolverine has in the trailer? I thought he didn't have claws until the got all that metal in him? I'm so confused...

Read the posts above yours. Mine and AwesomeXXX's. And if you're really confused then check out the Wiki entry here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolverine_(comics). That should clear up a lot of questions people have.

do you fuck tards even read shit before you post it? asking if he had bone claws....actually read shit.

Just read Origin (the true story of wolverine) it's part of what this is based on and shows that he always had bone claws before weapon x.

Just to expand on Tabion20's explanation... straight from wikipedia...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolverine_(comics)
Cable's son Genesis kidnaps Wolverine and attempts to re-bond adamantium to his skeleton. This is unsuccessful and causes Wolverine's mutation to accelerate out of control. He is temporarily changed into a semi-sentient beast-like form in which he gains greater physical power than ever before, at the price of part of his humanity.

Then, of course, Apocalypse does something and everything returns to normal again...

What a nerd herd!

Video doesn't work. Removed by 20th Century Fox

#14, that's the only thing you saw wrong?? What about Deadpool and Gambit being in Weapon X? That's completely wrong and also very stupid. Also Silver Fox is a white chick now, Blob is in the movie for no reason as is Cyclops and probably others. I'll be missing this awful looking movie.

I'm almost finished with Tomb of Dracula: Essentials, Volume 1.

#6- No, aluminium is what everyone else who wrote these comments made their wolverine claws out of. the "real" wolverine's claws are adamantium.
#15- you win.
#39- boo you don't win. Let some people who are not smitten with a color clashing, spandex wearing, musical singing comic book character have some fun.
BTW, that was a Hugh Jackman/"Oklahoma" reference. Go ask your mom. She's probably upstairs cooking dinner.

In response to #46... Yeah, sorry to break it to you, but Deadpool was in the weapon X program. If you had done a little homework before posting what you thought you knew, then you wouldn't be left standing there, with your pants around your ankles, looking for a desperate way to come back.

Sorry... it's not like me to post without a little backup, so here you go:

so, I've been playing a little drinking game while reading this comments section... It's called "drink every time someone says 'bone claws'" I am completely shit-housed now. thanks guys

I only read X Men a little , but I loved the cartoon. I can't wait to see the movie...but does he have bone claws in the comics too??? I know sometimes movies change things. Either way its gonna be awesome!!!!!!!!

Read Origin, its a 6 park comic and it shows the kid claws

Just goes to prove that there's hope for everyone, including fat kids.

yes he have bone claw oh u stupid people they don't read comics wolverine origin hah bunch dumbasses......

Real Name: James Howlett, now goes by Logan

History: In the late 1880's a child by the name of James Howlett was born. As a child James was a frail and sick boy. His allergies didn't allow him to go out and play much. His father had requested that a twelve year old girl be brought to their estate. That girl was named Rose and she was to be a friend and play mate to James. She read to him and looked after him. Along with the grounds keeper's son, Dog, James and Rose were the only children on the hill where the estate was. They had become close friends and played together as much as possible but Dog slowly grew away from them. Dog's father, the grounds keeper was named Thomas Logan, he was an alcoholic and abuse his son.

Over the next few years Dog started to follow in his father footsteps, becoming cruel and heartless. James was given more responsibilities by his father and grandfather. After a big fight, Dog killed James's K-9 companion which resulted in the Logans getting kicked off the Howlett estate.

In a fit of rage and anger Thomas Logan and his son entered the estate armed. They then took Rose hostage and demanded that she take them to the masters' bedroom. There the elder Logan tried to persuade James's mother, Elizabeth, to leave with them. Before they could leave John entered the room and discovered them together. In a rage of hate and dislike Thomas shot John as James walked into the room. Seeing his father shot and killed shocked him so much that it triggered his latent mutant abilities. His claws extended and continued through Thomas.

After his mother shunned him for his unusual abilities he fled the house. Rose followed to see what she could do. She found James outside the house on the ground and cold. She brought him to the barn in order to try and warm him up. Not knowing what to do Rose brought James to his grandfather house. He ended up giving them cash and told them never to come back again.

Rose took James and went to British Columbia looking for a place that they could live in peace. Rose remembered her father talking of quarries in the Northern frontiers and she figured that would be a good place for them to start looking. Making it to a quarry, they met a man named Smitty who was the foreman. That is when Rose gave James the name Logan to hide his true identity.

By the second summer there Logan was providing for both Rose and himself. He had trained himself to be a fine hunter and he also worked hard at the quarry. Smitty even gave him a new job in demolitions. Shortly after that Smitty asked Rose to marry him. The proposal upset Logan but he finally realized that Smitty did indeed love Rose. Logan then helped Smitty get money for tickets away from the quarry.

Before Smitty and Rose could leave Dog showed up. At the request of Logans grandfather he was to kill Logan and Rose for what he believed they did. In the fight that followed Rose tried to break it up but was struck by Logans claws and died. After that, not being able to live among people for what he did he left the camp and went off into the wilderness to live alone.

It wasn't until his first recorded encounter with the Hulk, as an agent of Canada's Department H, that anyone had heard of him or knew that he was interacting with people again.

Logan possesses memories of being a Samurai in Japan, a mercenary operative for the Central Intelligence Agency, and a "wild man" in the Canadian wilderness. Due to the extensive memory implants given to Logan through the Weapon X program, any and all of these memories are suspect. Logan has at least one memory of meeting Captain America in World War II which was verified as true. It is possible that Logan's healing factor grants him an extended life span and has granted him the physical condition of a man in his prime, despite his age.

Sometime after World War II, Logan was taken by a group of scientists led by Dr. Cornelius as part of the Weapon X program. Cornelius was hired to perfect and use a technique that would bond the indestructible element adamantium to human bone cells. Logan's skeleton was bonded to the adamantium, and he was indoctrinated into the Weapon X assassin program.

After his encounter with the Hulk, Wolverine was conscripted by Department H to join and lead Alpha Flight, Canada's government-run super team. During his leadership of Alpha Flight, Wolverine was approached by Professor Charles Xavier, who was looking for mutants to help his students, the X-Men, escape from the island-being known as Krakoa, which had captured them. Wolverine left Alpha Flight to accompany Xavier and rescue the captured X-Men. After Krakoa was defeated, Wolverine decided to stay with the X-Men, for reasons which included that he had fallen for the X-Man known as Marvel Girl.

Logan remained with the X-Men for quite some time, at one time being their field commander, and encountering adversaries such as Proteus, Magneto, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, the Brood, the Reavers, demons from the dimension of Limbo, the Marauders, the Morlocks, and even Dracula on one occasion.

After his encounter with the mutant assassin Omega Red, Logan began to question the memories he possessed, but his searches to find his true identity and memories proved fruitless.

During an encounter with the mutant Magneto on his space station called Avalon, Wolverine attempted to defeat Magneto using the claws presumably given to him by the Weapon X project. Magneto retaliated, using his powers of the magnetic field to tear the adamantium out of Wolverine's skeleton, causing extensive injuries. These injuries shorted out Wolverine's healing factor for a time, and Logan also discovered that the claws that he believed a result of the Weapon X project were in fact a natural mutation. The claws he now possesses are bone, and a natural part of his skeletal structure.

As a result of his injuries, Logan left the X-Men for a time, returning after he was asked by Xavier, who also asked the mutant Cable, to rescue the X-Men in Tibet, where they were captured during the Phalanx invasion.

Recently, Logan was kidnapped by Tyler Dayspring, calling himself Genesis, who wanted to make Wolverine one of his new Horsemen. Genesis had acquired adamantium by destroying the body of the mercenary known as Cyber, and had planned to recreate the bonding process used on Logan years ago. This time, however, Logan's body rejected the adamantium, and he regressed for a time to a feral-like state.

Logan regained his lucidity, rejoined the X-Men, and is now supervising the team while Cyclops and Jean Grey are on leave. Still without his Adamantium, Logan was kidnapped by the would-be conqueror Apocalypse, perhaps the world's first mutant, and forced to fight the savage assassin Sabretooth for the mantle of the Horseman Death. Viewing himself as a more merciful candidate than his fellow mutant, Logan fought hard to win the battle. As a result, his skeleton again was laced with Adamantium. Under the control of Apocalypse, Wolverine fought the X-Men ferociously in his Death persona. But with the help of his teammates, he eventually broke free from Apocalypse's control.

Height:5 ft. 3 in.
Weight: (without adamantium skeleton) 200 lbs., (with adamantium skeleton) 300 lbs.
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Black

Strength Level: While Wolverine may be of an advanced age, he possesses the normal human strength of a man in his prime with his height and build who engages in intensive regular exercise. While possessing the adamantium skeleton, Wolverine's strength was increased to the human maximum, making him capable of lifting (pressing) 800 lbs.

Known Superhuman Powers: Wolverine is a mutant with a number of enhancements to his physiology. Wolverine possesses heightened senses, making him capable of seeing things at a maximum distance greater than that of a normal human. His hearing is enhanced in a similar manner, and he is able to recognize people and objects by scent, even if that person or object is hidden. Logan can use these enhanced senses to track anyone, with an impressive degree of success.

He possesses retractable bone claws that are housed in his forearms, they are part of his skeleton system. At will Wolverine can release these claws through his skin between the knuckles on each hand. The skin between the knuckles tears and bleeds, but bleeding is quickly halted by his healing factor. The claws are naturally sharp and tougher than that of normal human bone structure. This allows Wolverine to be able to cut through most types of flesh and natural materials. (Note: While Wolverine possessed his adamantium skeleton, his claws were able to cut through almost any material without any fear of damage to the claws.)

Lastly, Wolverine possesses an accelerated healing factor based on his physiology. While most normal humans heal injuries over a long period of time, Wolverine's healing factor speeds up that natural process. Wolverine's natural healing has been advanced to the point where he can heal extensive injuries (such as broken limbs) in a matter of hours to days. This factor gives him a higher resistance to poisons and toxins, and he can recover from almost any injury. The more extensive the injury, the longer the healing time will be.

Wolverine is not immortal, however. If the injuries are extensive enough, especially if they result in the loss of vital organs, large amounts of blood, and/or loss of physical form (such as having flesh burned away by fire or acid), Logan can die.

Wolverine, again due to his healing factor, has an enhanced resistance to disease, as well as an extended life span. Despite Wolverine's chronological age, he is still as healthy and physically fit as a man in his prime.

Abilities: Due to his extensive training as a CIA operative, a Samurai, and as a member of the Weapon X program, Wolverine is a master of multiple forms of martial arts, weapons, and vehicles. He is also a trained expert in computers, explosives, and assassination techniques.

NOTE: Hugh Jackman played him in X-Men the movies.

ok ok all you people that have this problem over wolverine havin bone claws, dont go see the movie, you people have no right to be there. the title is called x-men origins... oh yah it is isnt it you winey little girls, its based on the comic origins in which oh yah HE HAD BONE CLAWS!!!! now toff off n quit complainin, damn good movie btw, peace

Sabertooths Comic finger claws have changed their form in many of the comics and Ol' Victor had adamantium at one point too.

In the ultimates universe, Sabertooth also has claws similar to Wolverines, four on each hand protruding from his knuckles, on one hand one of the claws is broken off effectively granting him a total of 7 claws plus the claws that are on his fingertips.

Not so in the movie which depics a sabertooth more similar to the XMEN 1 version with the addition that he can grow his fingertip claws at will.

Marvel changes everything because they are fuck nuts! The bottom line is Wolverine originally never had bone claws but because of a stupid fuckin Origins comic in 2000, they go back on what they've previously decided and say, "Dude, it would be cool if he had bone claws. Let's do it!" So there you have it - the movie is based off the retarded and skewed Origins comic where he had the retarded bone claws! Had they based it on the original books starting from Incredible Hulk #181, they would have had a better movie by far.

And by the way, please stop posting shit from Wikipedia like it holds some sort of authority! You, me, anyone can update Wikipedia with "facts" and everyone in the cyberworld takes it as bible!

Now everyone have a nice cup of SHUT THE FUCK UP!

I agree with Dexter, but I liked the Origins comic.
