Feb 2 2009'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' Super Bowl Spot

transformers-super-bowl.jpg

I assume most of you watched the Super Bowl last night--there's obviously a huge cross-over between sports fans and fans of complaining incessantly about the quality of a Dragonball adaptation--but in case you didn't, I'll spend some of the day putting up the movie spots that ran during the game. Here's the ad for Transformers 2, which has definitely raised the bar in terms of robot size and number of Transformers that turn into cycloptic robot dogs:

Hang from his neck, Optimus Prime! Get Him!

Reader Comments

it was eh.

so, they have robot dogs and other unidentifiable robot monsters, but they couldn't do the Dinobots because "that just wouldn't make any sense?"

so...where the robots that we know and love, i dont think they even showed the ones from the last movie, cept optimus get his face smashed.
i think the gigantic one, is supposed to be the constructicons, joined together.

The big one is Devastator's CHEST.

The rest haven't combined yet, when they do he'll be the size of a skyscraper

This trailer looked like more of the same...

Explosions and debris all over the place so you can't really focus on any details of the robots (or the actual movie).

They got that stupid chick back for this one and more explosions.

Did I mention that there will be a lot of explosions in this movie?

KA-Booooooom....

The Audi R8 looks bada@@ doing that front rolling transformation thing. It will definitely as famous as the Camaro in the first film.

It looks like the robot dog is actually Ravage... hmmm... but who knows???

they did show starscream 18 seconds in. does this look like it could be the terminator movie to anyone else? with the dumb little sound effect and everything. if i hadn't seen transformers before, i'd be like, cool the new terminator movie has a tv spot now.

so when the constructicons dont use the two for the leg, there is a big giant wheel instead? that looked dumb. otherwise this looks awesome. fun fun

I'm pretty sure they won't have dinobots because in the movies they have to do that scan thing, and if they did that would mean they were on earth way before we were...

@ #2 Great Point I agree! Also, for a summer movie I like explosions, hot chicks, and giant robots so I'm going to see this movie, and then I'm going to go over and get everybody I know to see it... and G.I. Joe too just to piss all the net nerds that think their movie critics off! Seriously who wants to see giant space robots get introspective and deep, that shit didn't work in the first Hulk movie, because people want to see shit get smashed in a summer film.

@10, SO WHAT'S WRONG WITH THEM BEING ON EARTH WAY BEFORE US? THEY ARE AN OLDER RACE THAN US, AND ITS GREAT BECAUSE THE ASTEROID THAT WIPED OUT THE DINOSAURS COULD HAVE BURIED THEM UP UNTIL THIS POINT. OR LIKE SOMEONE ELSE SAID, MAYBE THEY JUST HAPPEN TO SEE SOME DINOSAUR EXHIBITS OR SOME CRAP.

@12 AHHHHHHHHHHH!

was that gizmoduck at the end ruining that overpass's shit?

reference:
http://cybernetnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/gizmoduck.jpg

holy shit this is going to be the coolest movie ever. did you guys just see that shit!!!!!??? yes!

@#10, did you ever see Beast Wars?? They mostly scanned fossils underground and got their dinosaur shapes. So it would be possible for the movie, just not likely.

This is looks cool. Yes...I hate Bay and think he's a tool...yes the first movie was GREAT....yes this one wont be oscar worthy material either. But...its got explosions...action....and big fucking Transformers...I'll see it.

But to the people bitchin that are like "OMG its got explosions, more explosions, zomg whatever shall I do?" Well...what the fuck do you expect from a Transformers movie? Its not no fucking Forrest Gump happy go lucky Grade A piece of story telling. Its about giant robots fighting each other on Earth...What do you expect?

Douches...

that ad was sooo lame, as I was sobbing over how bad Arizona sucked I thought this was like someting for Star Trek

Ah, the internet! The endless void of ever watching, ever judging, never pleased unsympathetic dumdums. No remorse! Now I can admit that this "teaser" wasn't that good. Mostly because it was more of just half of a good trailer. It seemed they were missing the second half. However, it did show some pretty awesome things.

1) We have ravage. Soundwave was confirmed for this movie so, yes. I am convinced this is Ravage. (but oh nos! we are ascared of Soundwaves cybertron form so he must be shunned right away without actually seeing or hearing anything of him!!1!)
2) Starscream is seen ready to rip Sam apart showing the decepticons getting more vicious not to mention showing that these robots might be getting bigger roles and, hey! They might just be the main characters this time around!
3) Mister big robo destroying all in his path. I'm hoping this is Devastator but some people are speculating that this is the "Fallen" that the title is referring to but that really would be dumb.

As for the people who are really torn up about the Dinobots, think about it. Do you really want another Spider-man 3 or Xmen 3? Transformers can get away with more characters then normal since its more of a team-based story but now it looks as though we might be getting the constructicons. If that is true then the Dinobots may be waaaay too much right now. In my opinion, maybe the Dinobots shoudn't be in the movies. If they can work a way to bring them in and do it right (sorry DJiLLPAPA but ravage is not a major character so you can't compare it with the Dinobots) then, by all means, I'd love to see them do it but I just don't think they can to it right so I say it's best left undone.

Overall, lets thing positively! The last movie didn't dissapoint (at least for me it didn't) so who is to say that this one is going to bomb? I'll still go in this movie without huge expectations but I still think this is going to be a good one. One complaint I do have is that they BETTER have the theme song this time!

Oh and to #14. BEST COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE! To be fair Gizmoduck IS pretty awesome so I have no quarrel with him being in the movie.

You nay-sayers are fu`cking nuts, that's the coolest thing I've seen in years! And it's only 31 seconds long! That spot showed Optimus Prime, Starscream, Megatron's new foot (tank tread), along with the new Audi R8, of which some think it's a re-formatted Barricade from the first one. That constructicon, as stated earlier is only 1 of 7 that make up Devastator! Prime was only as big as its head!!! Devy is gonna be massive!!!

And yes, that cyclops dog thing is Ravage.

They haven't even shown Jetfire yet, who is gonna be an SR-71 Blackbird. This movie is gonna be so full of win, all the other pics for the summer might as well shut down.

Mikaela: You think I'm shallow, don't you?
Sam: *thinks* Yes, but you're insanely hot, so we'll all forgive you.

@ 20
*sobs* I'm sorry

IF AUTO PARTS MAKERS ARE BROKE, HOW WILL OPTIMUS GET PARTS? MORE BAILOUTS NEEDED?

One of them lands on a carrier, so I am assuming it takes one the form of a jet, BUT the only fighter jets on a carrier are NOT F-22's (Starscream) and NOT Blackbirds (Jetfire). So who is it?

I think the Audi R8 is Jazz. If the Decepticons can come back from the dead, why not an Autobot?

hey trans lady boys..dinobots are not coool. i could care less. think about it...oh we need to blend in...shit....lets turn into large extict dinosaurs..that have a mental iq of 28.

dumb mtf

@24: Nope, the Audi is being chased by Sideswipe...definitely not Jazz. He's dead and gone.

@23: Well yeah, the SR-71 has been (re)decommissioned for over 10 years, and certainly wouldn't be aboard a Navy ship. Jetfire is roumored to lay dormant, though in a hangar, not a glacier like in the original cartoon, and will be found by an R/C car named "Wheelie." How cool is that?!

Bay and the writers said there are over 40 robots in this one. So it could be pretty much anyone. In fact there's nothing saying that those aren't Autobots crashing into the Carrier, after all, Jazz took a header into Dodger Stadium in the first one. Broadside was an Autobot triple changer: Bot-Carrier-Plane...could be him for all we know...

@19: Yes, Ravage was a major character, certainly a fan favorite if anything.

Dinobots are out of the question, the reality factor goes completely out the window when you bring them, or guys like Cosmos, or things like the Terrorcons in. And by "reality" I mean their alt modes...being able to blend in.

...though Scorponok pretty much proved against that point, so nevermind...anything's possible!

Gotta see it at least once, but i can't help but remember how awesome the first one looked before that shit-fest rolled on the screen. Let's just say that, in te first movie, every scene without giant robots fighting sucked shit and they decided to make that the majority of the movie. Yeah, because Shia Lebouf and all that stupid shit with John Turturro and the "Independence Day" Area 51=Sector 7 ripoff bullshit is so much more interesting than GIANT ROBOTS FROM SPACE BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF EACH OTHER. God dam you Michael Bay, don't fuck this one up.

@26 (reffering to reponse to 19)

I'm sorry, that was said a little wrong. By "major" character I only really mean the affect Ravage had on the show compared to the Dinobots. Certainly Ravage is a well-loved character and I do remember a whole episode in the old cartoon revolving around the character but all in all Ravage is a minion of Soundwave where the Dinobots were a complication. They were supposed to serve the Autobots but they rebelled and, just for a little bit, were a third neutral party that wanted to do their own thing. They had quite a bit more oomf to them other then being a fan favorite. Really I was just trying to say, is Ravage really a valid argument to bring in the Dinobots?

@27

I really do not like that topic. "Humans had a bigger spotlight then the transformers!" ...yes. Why? Because Michael Bay wasn't trying to attract JUST the fans, he wanted to bring in people new to Transformers. To do this logic points to giving familiar human actors the main role. If we had a huge live action movie of Giant Robots fighting & taking care of the talking and plot development, well, it would be awesome but not everyone would get into it. Now, Revenge of the Fallen, this movie can shift the spotlight to the Autobots and Decepticons and they really much need to do so. Everyone now who have seen the first one and loves it can make this transition. I am 100% with you on focussing this movie on them but please understand the first movie just wouldn't have worked as well that way.

The "down" scenes weren't necessarily Bay's fault. Hasbro gave him a limited budget for the first one due to their apprehension on the success of it. Since it was a smash hit, the gave him pretty much free reign on this one. There will also be like 4x more toys for this one too.

I also forgot to mention, that Audi R8 is definitely a Decepticon, regardless of who it is. The toy was leaked out of China a couple of weeks ago and has a big ass Decepticon logo on the back. And the head kinda looks like Barricades, that's why the consensus is that it's him reformatted:

http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-toys--products-30/first-impressions-review-and-extensive-images-of-revenge-of-the-fallen-audi-r8-decepticon-166685/

oops *Barricade's

Hey Tom,

You make some good points -- I also get tired of movies focusing on humans so much, but in addition to the human-centric points you make, the cartoon series itself was highly focused on humans. While Bay & pals threw a portion of Transformers tradition out the window, he still kept some of the core concepts from the cartoon, like the relationship between Spike and Bumblebee. It could be that the focus of the movie owed a lot to their friendship, like it or not.

I always hated Spike and prayed Megatron would squish him like the bug he was.

At least Megan Fox is still hot!

@31: Yeah, Spike was kind of a douchebag...and what was with him and his dad always wearing construction outfits with hard hats? I never remember them actually building anything....must have been part of a union.

I really like the first movie of transformers!! Even my 3 year old son keeps on repeating the movie. The story was very nice and the casts as well. We will surely watch this transformers 2.. I bet it will have a lot of action, thrillers and more exciting.

at 0:10 it looks like that robot from"9"

After reading all of that, I only have one question.

Who the FUCK would complain about Megan Fox being in a movie.

What is Shia saying? I can't catch it. Please tell me.

robot dogs? Retard that's suppose to be ravage.

@37: "You don't stop, you don't hide, you run."

@38: Yes, it's Ravage, and no, you're right, Ravage is actually a feline (jaguar)...but is often mistaken for a dog:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TYzRanykbQ

oops, let's try that again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TYzRanykbQ

the dog looking thing is ravage, soundwave is in the film & he has his pretenders with him, i would think the giant one would be the aircraft carrier, im not sure what its name is, arcee is in the film with a custom motorbike persona, with this one they have brought back alot of them, but, like what they did with jazz, its incredibly hard to guess who is who

the audi r8 is stingray

@42: How do you figure? There's never been a Transformer named "Stingray", and that name's never been brought up on the call sheets, at least not mentioned on tfw2005.com, and if anyone would know...they would.

I'm really interested to know if this is speculation or if you have a source.

The consensus is still that the Audi R8 is Barricade, reformatted.

The giant one is a constructicon, one of 6 or 7 that make up Devastator. Its alt mode is an excavator shovel, thought to be named (fittingly) Scavenger: http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-toys--products-30/rotf-constructicon-power-shovelexcavator-video-review-166729/

I think you might mean that you think the car featured (Audi R8) is a Stingray. No, however the new Corvette Stingray Concept is in the movie, he's Sideswipe. 2 completely different cars and characters.

So sad, without the Dino bot's it's not the same story anymore. When I was a kid I liked so much the toon becouse the dinosaure bot's!

if you wached the animated ones at all then youll realize the dino bot have the iq of a rock so they would scan the first then that looked natral, and the wouldn't know the diffrence between something extinct or somthing alive

also i dout theres any new decepticons because they were all here hunting for the all spark but starscream and one outher survived so they will show up.

hey anyone else notice the microwave form the first one disapeared but the soda machine and car stayed with the auto bots?

@46/47: What?

Returning Decepticons: Megatron, Starscream, Scorponok, and possibly a reformatted Barricade

New Decepticons: Soundwave, Ravage, Devastator (consisting of 6 different cons), The Fallen (kinda, he's one of the original 13 TF's...but still a bad guy), and Jetfire starts out as a Decepticon.

There are sure to be more too, but what are you talking about with the microwave, soda machine, and car?

Also, TF: Animated sucks. The designs are hideous and are an absolute insult.

48 the soda machine car and micro wave that were turned into transformers from the allspark at the end when sam dropped it the car and soda machine showed up at the end of the fight but the microwave just wasn't there.

YAY YAY YAY another transformers YESSSSSSSS

YAY YAY YAY another transformers YESSSSSSSS

@ 49: That wasn't a microwave, that was an Xbox 360. The car (escalade) wasn't affected, only the steering wheel was, it attacked the girl's face. And no they didn't, they weren't seen again after that one scene where they "get sparked".

The extended, newer teaser: http://vimeo.com/3239526?pg=embed&sec=3239526&hd=1

And to correct myself on #26, the Audi R8 is being chased by the 3 combiners that make up Arcee (not Sideswipe.)

* update. The Audi R8 is named Sideways, it's not a reformatted Barricade: http://www.tfw2005.com/resources/transformers-movie-2-revenge-of-the-fallen-271/sideways-3541/
