Feb 9 2009Rorchach's Mask is Made of Science
Empire has posted a new Watchmen behind-the-scenes video about the process behind making Rorschach's constantly-shifting mask. The secret: computers. They're not just for word processing anymore.
Also there are some never-before-seen Rorschach's youth scenes:

God, Synder's such a fag.
Good stuff, but I wish they'd stop trying to assure/convince me that they're doing the comic justice.

I dunno, as detailed as the mask animations are, I think they're bogus. Rorschach's mask was defined in the comic as being a latex-like material with ink in between two layers, so it really only shifts when he moves or breathes. The ink flow that I saw in that film clip looked WAY too fake and "CGI-ified" to me. They could have at least made it more subtle and less of the overly-perfect fluidity that gives CG animation away so damned easily.

Having been to a preview screening in london a few days ago I must say I found his quickly changing mask more than a little distracting and pointless. The rest of the film?, loved it.

Well, what you saw was not the finished product. It's just, what the VFX supervisor called, "R and D." Simply preproduction and and screen tests.
Although, they did show that they gave it a canvas texture, which does look good on camera, as they said, and probably looks more like a real Rorchach test, but, you're right, doesn't stay true to the novel.

Also, @2
That's why you shoudn't buy into all the hype that surrounds a movie. I mean, I'm looking forward to it, but I try not to watch any clips or exerpts. I watched this because I'm in the VFX industry and was curious as to how they achieved the moving ink effect.
You're falling for all the marketing ploys. My theory is, the lower your expectations are when you see a film, the greater the film will be. At least in your eyes.
It's the same thing as a comedy that has all the funniest parts in the trailer. Like, for example, Pineapple Express. By the time you see the movie, it's been ruined for you.
