Feb 3 2009Never Get in John Connor's Eyeline
I was going to leave this for The Superficial since it seems more gossipy than movie news relevanty, but seeing that so many people sent it in last night and this morning, here's a link to the recording of Christian Bale flipping out on Terminator Salvation cinematographer Shane Hurlbut. Apparently the D.P. was wandering around while Bale was doing a dramatic scene, so Bale decided to go off on the guy for several expletive-filled minutes, threatening to trash his lights and kick his "fucking ass" while Hurlbut meekly defends himself. And even more surprising: Christian Bale still has to call McG "McG"?
Obviously not safe for work unless you want to threaten your workmates in a Welsh accent.

Jesus christ..I've always been a big Bale fan but I lost quite a bit of respect for the man.
No reason to start whining like a little bitch. So the guy walked into the scene..boo fucking hoo. You're still getting your 15-20 million at the end of the movie whether you have to do the scene twice or not.
And while I understand why the director didn't stand up for the poor guy because he doesn't want Bale walking off set and destroying the movie someone should have tried to stop Bale from humiliating the man.
I guess every actor in the world starts to get a big fucking ego.
2. Count Orlock - February 3, 2009 10:51 AM
But I do like how he tried to keep his American accent throughout the tirade.
Only a few times did his true accent come out.
3. soup - February 3, 2009 11:05 AM
When action etc is called, no one should be wandering. I don't completely blame Bale. I think he overreacted, but then we don't know how many times this happened; it didn't seem like a one off.
It's not ego. Getting pissed off is called being human.
4. Sithlord - February 3, 2009 11:13 AM
gotta say, he's let me down. no reason what so ever to blow up like that. we get angry at people from work all the time, we don't go off like that. it's called respect.
5. B - February 3, 2009 11:18 AM
It's not like he's the only one to go off on someone when he's had a bad day. If Hurlbut is experienced at his job and professional, then he should know better than to wander around on a set when filming. No, it doesn't excuse Bale from anything, but give the guy a break, this was also around the same time he was being (falsely) accused of going ape-shit on his mom and sister. No one else that we've heard has ever complained about his behavior on- or off-set, so maybe it was just a one time thing. I've been there before, as I'm sure a lot of you have. Everyone has their breaking point.

Please, everyone who is taking this seriously, or looking at Bale any differently, drink some damn Drain-O. Who cares?! He's human, that's what humans do. Sometimes they go off on people, for both justified and unjustified reasons. The problem is, when you are a celebrity, apparently you also can't be human. No one really knows any details except what he said. No one knows what the shit was going on in his life or even at that exact moment. Whether you take acting seriously or not, the actors do. When you focus on one thing, such as the scene you are in, and someone fucks that shit up, you get mad. He got mad, and spoke his mind. I'm not judging whther it was justified or not, because I don't know all the facts. Just like the rest of you.
8. Pacoiba - February 3, 2009 11:31 AM
I work in this and Bale was right at getting pissed. Yeah, he did over reacted, should've calmed down, but he was def entitled to get pissed off about someone else not respecting his job. It's simple set etiquette, when's your time, you do your job and everyone else wait on you (even talent - ex. when a scene's been lit) but like everyone else, once ure done, ure done and it's someone else's time to do their job. In this case the only excuse I find for him to be going to a light would be because it was probably at a dangerous angle and might fall off or something security related, in which case you let know everyone on set immediately (you can even cut if its for security) but if is just to appreciate a light then yeah, youre being fucking amateur cus you should've done that before camera rolling. Once its rolling, you, as a D.P (director of photography aka cinematographer) should be right behind a VTR Monitor next to the director seeing at how did the scene looks. Not in the talent's way, distracting them. Also, we don't know how important/intense was this scene and how hard was for Bale to get to that emotional point.
9. Dan - February 3, 2009 11:32 AM
ok i understand him getting pissed off but did he have to go on for over 3 minutes? he really drew that out that was uncomfortable.
10. B - February 3, 2009 11:39 AM
Just for the record...dude is no amateur.... http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0403397/

swing vote, semi-pro, into the blue, crazy/beautiful, mr.3000, the skulls
yeah he's a legend.
12. Sithlord - February 3, 2009 11:46 AM
WHAT'S THE WORLD COMING TO??? D.P. still stands for Double Penetration, doesn't it?
13. Synch G - February 3, 2009 11:54 AM
i thought the same thing to myself, soup42. Bale at one point says:
"I've never had a D.P. behave like this, uh, you don't understand what's it like working with actors, you wouldn't have done that anyways!"
so when the only types of movies the D.P. has worked with are "Into the Blue, Drumline, Crazy/Beautiful", it rings truth what kinda situation Bale was working under.
14. Daniel - February 3, 2009 11:55 AM
Yeah, I do this all the time to my coworkers at work. It's not ego guys, just being human.
Brb some fucking asshole just forgot to clean out the coffee maker. Fucking going to kill this guy.
15. Count Orlock - February 3, 2009 12:01 PM
While getting angry is human nature...getting angry and shouting at another adult is called being a child.
Bale is a grown ass man. He has no right to sit there and verbally beat the shit out of that guy in front of a group of people.
Teenagers do that shit..we as adults are supposed to be just that...adults.
Things piss me off but I don't call someone out in a public place or go on a 4 minute curse filled tirade. Had that been someone with some balls Bale might of been knocked the fuck out.
16. automaton - February 3, 2009 12:10 PM
Serves Bale right for taking a paycheck to work with questionable talent like McG and co. Bale just stop whining, count your money and move on to the next over-hyped pos movie.
17. proteon - February 3, 2009 12:31 PM
All of you idiots go rent Charlies Angels the first disaster and come back and suck some McG for the class. Those of you who work in a little hamster cubicle getting your 1.2% raise a year have probably never heard a grown up raise his voice like this except your dad.
Christian Bale is the fucking man. You are the peanut gallery aka the masses aka lemmings.
Our collective "feeling" about this is worthless.
18. proteon - February 3, 2009 12:34 PM
Oh and the word FUCK won't bring about the end of the world anywhere near as fast as our obsession with our own scent. Yeah you know.
19. what? - February 3, 2009 12:42 PM
hahaha that's why people like him, right? so he's not the best person but he sure is entertaining!
20. Count Orlock - February 3, 2009 12:49 PM
"Oh and the word FUCK won't bring about the end of the world anywhere near as fast as our obsession with our own scent. Yeah you know."
I'm not even talking about that..as you can read I too curse. We're talking respect and being an adult. I am a 28 year old man and I don't do that shit. No one has the right to talk to someone like that...I don't give a shit who it is.
21. Joe - February 3, 2009 2:01 PM
That's it? What's the big deal? No worse then thousands of conversations I've heard in "civilized" white collar companies.
"No, shut the fuck up Bruce!" Classic line.
I think Bale blew his stack, but the DP screwed up and got his ass handed to him. Bale takes his job seriously, and suffers fools poorly. I think Bale's reaction is understandable.
The DP should have left the set when Bale got pissed. Bale is the key to making the scene work, not the DP.
22. Joe - February 3, 2009 2:12 PM
Um, Shane Hurlburt has been a DP on several films...all comedies or dramas, with lessor actors. This is by far his biggest film, and Bale is the most quality actor he's worked with (Kevin Costner would have had the same reaction in his Waterworld days; now he's too fat and happy to care).
Shane should have STFU and left; instead he decides to egg Bale on, which is an invitation for an ass-whipping. Just say sorry, and skulk away. He needs to know how actors are - he's been in Hollywood long enough. In that way, he is
an amateur.
Everyone blows their tops once in while - this is hardly being whiny - just pissed.
"Let's go again! Let's not take a fucking minute! Let's go again!"
Reminds me a Boogie Nights when Dirk says, after taking some cocaine, "I"m ready to fuck now!"
"You're a nice guy, but it doesn't cut it when you are fucking around on a set."
That's the truest statement in Hollywood.
23. nobody - February 3, 2009 2:44 PM
Friend of mine was in the room when it happened. The DP is a PRICK. Bale lost it for sure but if anyone was going to get their ass handed to them, I'm glad it was that fool. Rock on Bale.
24. Werner Herzog - February 3, 2009 2:47 PM
This shitty DP is lucky that Christian didn't mistake him for a real terminator and blow his fucking pig head off.
25. B - February 3, 2009 3:08 PM
One thing I'm not understanding is...this happened over the summer why is it just now coming out? To hype the movie? To make Bale look bad before the movie so people won't like him? I don't get it...
26. J Man - February 3, 2009 3:22 PM
Typical American reaction, getting all sensitive and shit when someone just rips into someone else. It's no wonder everyone else considers the average American to be a fucking pussy.... you've all been fucking pussified by your women. Too scared to say shit in case someone is "offended", too scared to compliment women because they'll sue your ass.
Face it you'll are just too pussy to do shit. So what if CB went off on that asshole, everyone is entitled to it once in a way - everyone getting so fucking offended when you'll would just love to do the same to the next asshole who cuts you off on the freeway. You know even gay men, no matter how camp, rip into people and goddamn it its funny as hell. Its you whitebread American idiots who do absolutely nothing because just about everything these days offends your delicate sensibilities. Fuck that, you guys used to be real men, what the fuck happened?
27. proteon - February 3, 2009 4:05 PM
@26
Online annonymity has made everyone a tough guy.
The upshot is you can't fake experience and the lack of it glares.
28. cbobgo - February 3, 2009 4:10 PM
that remix is awesome, I'm going to use that as my new ringtone.
29. bloop bloop - February 3, 2009 5:14 PM
If it's possible I love him even more.
Who hasnt felt like that before? Maybe it wans't the best reaction but still perfectly understandable.
30. Machinegunrap - February 3, 2009 5:36 PM
There's already been a response to that situation: http://tinyurl.com/b265eu
31. AC - February 3, 2009 5:58 PM
Ooooh, this is pretty bad. I will say that I used to work with Hurlbut, and he's not such a nice guy himself, however "meek" he may sound, here. I really want to keep liking Bale, so I'm just going to assume that he's some kind of karma conduit, or something.
32. che-che - February 3, 2009 6:03 PM
bale is a bitch, and people forget its a terminator, what acting skills do you really need to be in a movie like that.
if i was the director and or studio execs, i would have hired on the lighting dude, to take bales parts and finish the movie him instead. or even better he whas to be bales but buddy in the movie, that way bale has to see his face everyday.
33. Kyle - February 3, 2009 6:06 PM
Bale's comments at the end were spot on. "HE. DOES. NOT. GET. IT!"
Bale got real upset right? Well maybe the DP should know his role and let the actor get angry and back off. The fact that the DP was in some way defending his actions or was somehow surprised/upset about Bale's reaction, proves he doesn't get it. Both of these guys are making pretty good money, so I don't feel sorry for the DP. Acting in the manner of Bale is not easy because he immerses himself in the roles, so I'm sure it takes a tole on his emotions and mental endurance. So I think when Bale realized the DP was a moron who didn't understand why he was so upset, it made Bale that more pissed.
34. Christian Bale Gargles Balls - February 3, 2009 6:42 PM
FUCK CHRISTIAN BALE I HOPE HE DIES INA CAR CRASH. there is no excuse for talking down to people like that, what an egomanaic piece of shit. BATMAN SUCKS and fuck that ass hole, i hope he has no career after this.
35. K lee - February 3, 2009 7:09 PM
Christian Bale has an English accent, not Welsh. He was born in Wales but raised in England.
Just thought I'd add something else to the mix besides "You go girlfriend" or "Christian Bale gargles balls."
36. Strange Accent - February 3, 2009 7:13 PM
His accent is far from a typical Welsh accent. It sounds more like a crazy English-American hybrid.
37. J Man - February 3, 2009 10:37 PM
@27 you've clearly missed the point, its not a question of anonymity transforming everyone into tough guys, it's the typical holier than thou American reaction to things like this. So what if CB blew his cool and raged on someone, whether you're an actor or politician it happens sometimes and everyone is entitled to it now and again. The truth hurts don't it sunshine.
Every time I've been to the states (be it NY, LA, SF or TX) I see a bunch of fat ass cry babies who get offended by every damn thing. Your kids aren't allowed to play outside without sixteen layers of protective gear, everyone lives in a perpetual state of fear and anxiety and it is pussfying the lot of you'll
38. Rock Steady - February 4, 2009 12:24 AM
so true j man... so true
39. Amy - February 4, 2009 1:36 AM
Not to comment at all on your insightful insights into the American psyche, J Man, but what makes you assume that all the people who aren't overly impressed with Bale's outburst are American? Do you know what the first 'w' in 'www' stands for?
40. Chip - February 4, 2009 9:46 AM
Bale stands there and calls this guy "Unprofessional" - He is one to talk. How much more "UNPROFESSIONAL" can you get than to try to humiliate someone in front of several people, and now, with the help of the internet, the World. Bale was WRONG to chastise thes man in front of everyone. I have lost all respect for Bale.
41. r2sweetie84 - February 4, 2009 10:14 AM
Ugh. I'm so sick of Batman Fanboys defending everything that Christian Bale does. Stop jacking off to your Dark Knight DVD long enough to realize that this dude needs to be put in his place. It's very funny that he calls the D.P. "unprofessional", because everything HE was doing was the epitomy of unprofessional. Stop defending him. He's not worth it. One more thing. On the topic of Dark Knight, Heath was a good actor. He was not a great actor. He was ok in the movie, but please stop making him God-like. Don't make him a martyr just because he died (overdosed). What kind of message is that sending to kids. Be in a blockbuster comic book movie, die young (stupidly, by your own hand) and be worshiped for years. I mean, come on!
42. wth - February 4, 2009 11:38 AM
first off, don't bring your home life to work, if that whole mother fiasco was botherin him then lock it up. second, people do get angry, but there is a great difference between plain old anger and assertion. anger, and loads of it can be heard comin out of bales mouth. whats unfortunate is that bale is in a position of power in this film that allows him to get away with it. In a normal situation, where one isn't in a place of such power, a firm talking to and maybe mediation between the two parties was warranted. Maybe even some lessons in proper communication. Imagine how bloated and like this hollywood must be where power players can do as they please and only be approached very very carefully on there wrong doing.
43. darkpassenger - February 4, 2009 3:16 PM
FUCKS SAKES! whats wrong with you fucking people.so fucking christian fucking bale says fuck and looses his fucking temper because some fucking wanker fucking moves around on a fucking multi million dollar fucking shoot.what the fucks he supposed to fucking do fucking ask the fucking guy to"oh i say could you not move about dear boy while im acting as mankinds last hope against souless machines of death i find it most distracting if you would be so kind kissy kissy"HES FUCKING PLAYING FUCKING JOHN FUCKING CONNOR!.
44. slappy - February 4, 2009 5:18 PM
Who put all that sand in Mr. Bale's vagina ?
45. sup - February 5, 2009 11:34 AM
I don't think Bale's unprofessional, he's just getting rid of his rage so he can go back into the same emotional place for the scene, and as you can hear at the end, he said "let's go again, right now".
As for the length of the tirade, the DP kept egging him on, so you really cannot blame him.
46. slappy - February 5, 2009 12:36 PM
Man you people need to get off his cock I loved the Dark Knight and all but Bale's acting like an asshole here.
47. flacahoe - February 6, 2009 3:25 PM

Sums up how I feel about it. Things get taken out of context. Does anyone know if he publically apologized to the guy later? Only the people that were there know the full situation.
Could he have handled it better? Definitely. People make mistakes, sometimes big ones. With the internet, a big mistake becomes gargantuan.
And there's also the idea of context. What if you heard from someone that one of your friend's said,
"I'll fuck his mother!", but that wasn't the full conversation?
"Some dude said, 'I'll fuck his mother'. So I beat the living shit out of him. You don't talk about my friends like that."
Context.
