Jan 29 2009Miike's 'Yatterman' Preview, Premiere, Trailer, Dinosaur on a Disappearing Bridge
Hey, everyone going to New York Comic Con: I just realized that Takashi Miike, the director of great Japanese films like Audition and Happiness of the Katakuris, is one of the special guests. He'll be speaking and showing a 7-minute clip from his new film, Yatterman, February 6 at 4 PM, and tickets to the 8 PM premiere will be handed out at the Nikkatsu booth earlier in the day.
Why is this exciting?
1. Takashi Miike is pretty great.
2. This film involves giant robots, at least one dinosaur, and an overall feeling of madness.
Here's the trailer:
Why does every Japanese trailer end in an advertisement for a little charm thing? Their culture is such that at the end of any preview, audiences are apparently left with the reaction, "That looked alright, but how can I adorn my mobile phone with it?"

Miike has yet to disappoint me, but the whole manic-Japanese thing is something I can only handle in small doses.

This looks utterly ridiculous. I must see it. I love the visual style. It's something like Sky Captain meets anime.
10. Andrew - January 29, 2009 6:22 PM
Didn't they already make something like this and call it Power Rangers ahahahaha
11. Len - January 29, 2009 10:39 PM
That's Time Bokan, it was a silly anime in the 70's I think about time travel and shit

Ah Miike...
Why are not making Dragonball instead of this...
Will see this because it is made of pure Miike win.
13. Mr. Mason - January 30, 2009 4:48 PM
Goddamn it! Just when Sukiyaki Western Django made me swear off of anything Miike, he goes and makes his own version of the Cutie Honey live-action movie.
Bastard. Of course I'll see it.

... I am extremely envious, care to bring me along?
17. Zypher - January 31, 2009 10:11 AM
Wait, in the first pic... are those oven mitts and a frying pan on a giant robot with a cannon in the middle? and a masked cow driving it? while being surrounded by utter chaos? fun!
18. Andrea - January 31, 2009 4:44 PM
@Andrew: actually, at the time of Power Rangers, US was copying the japanese old school (Megaloman, to mention one).
19. the reaper - February 4, 2009 8:37 AM
ouch.
this is like something between lazy town, the power rangers and the great akira toriyamas madness.
and htere was this one guy who looked like a green waluigi from super mario...
creepy

a lot more viewer friendly than Ichi the Killer. I like it already

I don't... what the... that looks horrible! Are you shitting me? Extravagant insanity IN AND OF ITSELF does not make an enjoyable movie. This has all the directorial flourish of that shitty early 90s Double Dragon movie, but with more money thrown into costumes that have glittering block letters on them.
This is what Cowboy Bebop should look like? The subtle, psychologically intense, noirish scifi story should look like the bastard child of a Kool-aide ad and a videogame cut scene? Wow, yeah, but casting Keanu Reeves is going to ruin it.
It's the Japanese version of Watchmen? Why, because there are people in costumes? How do you draw that comparison? Or does "the Japanese version" mean "the version with annoying half-animals, poorly designed robots, insipid catchphrases, and no semblance of depth or sincerity"?
I love the part where the pig thing pukes on the rat thing. It's so creative and visionary! Just what our horrendous American adaptations of anime are lacking: bodily function humor.
22. Ichi the Dumb - February 10, 2009 4:31 PM
@ Frank
Agreed.
People people people, have you ever SEEN Audition? Or Visitor Q? Or Ichi? Or his Masters of Horror episode? Rambling idiocy, and completely disgusting.
23. Sam - February 13, 2009 5:58 AM
But, but they didn't show the evil lady teets as in the toon! That canot be wright...
24. Roo - February 13, 2009 12:49 PM
Actually saw the premiere - don't get your hopes up too much on the dinosaur. It shows up for a second and that's all. It's sort of a red herring and not really part of the movie.
Tons of giant robots though!
25. Aaron - February 15, 2009 10:48 PM
Um....what the hell is going on over there in japan? Long term effects of nuclear radiation? Only in Japan man, only in Japan...
26. robo - February 18, 2009 12:29 AM
i dont get it. is that a real movie? or a joke?
japanese people are weird.
27. Crappola - February 21, 2009 8:08 PM
uh... hmm...
28. Ashy - February 22, 2009 4:06 PM
ok first, Why is EVERY Asian guys name MIKE!? Just because you add another I does not make it cooler, it is still MIKE which is at the bottom of the English name bin. It's like a discount left over name! If you're going to pick an English name how about something exciting...like John?
Second, Why the hell didn't we get this guy for Dragonball!?
And lastly, the preview alone makes it look better then Machine Girl at least. How the hell did America get Machine girl!? I thought we put Asian films through a crazy filter before they got here.
29. Frank - April 16, 2009 12:20 PM
Say it with me, Ashy.
Miike.
*MEE-kay*
Get it?
