Dec 3 2008Studio Logos: What's the Story?

columbia-pictures-logo.jpg

If you've ever watched the studio logos opening a feature film and wondered, Columbia Pictures Lady: friend or foe?, I've got something for you. Neatorama has put together an informative piece on several of the big Hollywood studio logos, the histories behind them, and their variations throughout the years, laying out the stories behind the MGM lion, the Paramount mountain, and more. Sadly, the Nickelodeon Studios logo was left off the list, so we may never learn the full story behind a clusterfuck of orange shit.

I like that the newest Paramount logo is nicknamed the "Ultra Majestic Mountain".

Makes me think of the "Supper Aggro Crag".

isnt there also a studio that uses a horse? where is that one?

@2: Your mom uses a horse.

@3: How did you know?!

hahaha clusterfuck of orange shit

The horse/pegasus...I think that was Tri-Star. I'm fairly certain it became Columbia/Tristar, then just Columbia. Could be wrong, though.

Thanks for sharing that was really interesting!

I found this link to a youtube video of a bunch of the logos back to back. Sort of interesting.

"Sadly, the Nickelodeon Studios logo was left off the list, so we may never learn the full story behind a clusterfuck of orange shit."

Dammit! Now how the hell will I ever know, if YOU don't tell me???

The Nick logo, i think, is a take on the green slime from the classic "You Can't Do That On Television" or even possibly "Double Dare", but the slime from "Double Dare" is, again i think, a call to YCDTOT...a stylized homage to a song gone, but not forgotten...or so the conclusion i've come to...

So the Columbia logo was meant to be the female personification of America... hence the draped American flag... I'd love to know why it was replaced.

Hm... seems it was done in 1942. Odd considering the patriotism of the day.

According to Reel Classics:

"In 1941 the logo underwent another makeover. As the new logo appeared to introduce COMMANDOS STRIKE AT DAWN (1942), the lady looked much as she had in 1939, only the stripes were removed, and the flag became simply a drape without markings"

This is just a theory, I didn't do any research. But I'm guessing they removed the flag from her wardrobe because it's disrespectful. You know, you can't hang the flag a certain way, you can't let it touch the ground... I'll bet somewhere in the list of flag rules is one that reads: Don't wear.

Back when I was a kid and stayed up watching B&W monster movies, some were from RKO Pictures. They had a little biplane circling the earth (guess there was a radio tower too) and I often wonder when I see an updated logo, what they would do with that little plane circling the earth.
