Dec 12 2008'A Nightmare on Elm Street' Remake More Definitely Happening

Friday the 13th hasn't even been released but Platinum Dunes is already preparing to go ahead with their remake of the popular extended sleep apnea metaphor, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and are hopeful they'll start shooting by spring. From Shock Till You Drop:

Since Comic-Con in July, it was unknown whether producers Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form were going to be involved in the reboot of the Freddy Krueger franchise. But today, Fuller and Form confirmed to ShockTillYouDrop.com that their deal is done. "It's our next movie," confirmed Form, "hopefully shooting this spring."

Over the summer, Wesley Strick (Cape Fear) was attached to pen the script which is intended to re-imagine the dream-hopping teen killer. "It's like what we're doing to Friday the 13th," says Fuller. "It's not Freddy cracking jokes. We want to make a horrifying movie. The concept is so scary, don't fall asleep or you'll die. This guy gets you when you're most vulnerable, in your sleep. We love that. That's the basis of the movie. It'll be most similar to the first one but in terms of kills and dreams we'll borrow from the entire series."

"You know the basic premise of the movie? How it's a guy that kills you in your sleep? That's our favorite part: the basic concept. That's the part we're most excited to be stealing and reissuing."

I can't wait to see how they make the claws, like, really super long and awesome, and on both hands now, so he's twice as dangerous.

...And the rape of my favorite childhood movies is now complete.

Halloween, Prom Night, Friday the 13th, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Yeah, no one saw this coming. (*rolls eyes)
And while they're at it, they should probably take Billy Bob with them

What's next? Pee Wee's Big Adventure? They better not...

so will he molest children in the movie?!?!!? if so, I'm in!!!!

Why? Not why do they remake them but why do idiots go pay to watch them and encourage the studios to remake more classics? Don't be surprised if I turn up in the line to see this remake and slaughter them all with my Freddy fingers made from a glove and Swiss army knives.

@1 Yeah, right there with you. Unbelievable man, unbelievable. You would think with their " great " directing minds they could come up with new concepts and not rip off the dead, so to speak, scumbags... It better be good!

What the HELL? Is nothing sacred?!

Robert Englund IS Freddy Krueger. They will never be able to remake his performance.

Is it me or wasn't Wes Craven's New Nightmare a direct response to the f_ckholes who turned Krueger into a wisecracking clown in the first place?

Why is Hollywood so obsessed with taking movies that need no fixing, that are loved by all, and trying to make them crappy? Is there some guy sitting there and going 'Oh man, Nightmare on elm street is excellent, in fact, it's so good, we have to crappify it somehow. Oh, I know, lets remake it' ? Or do they just think 'Sure, the movie was OK I guess, but I think Wes Craven got it wrong, I would have done a much better job of it. In fact, since I have no original ideas of my own, I think I will'?

why does everyone always complain about remakes no one has even seen the friday the 13th remake and already think its shit... i look forward to it and i didn't like the originals that much.. also halloween hated the original but liked zombies version... if the original director and actors don't have a problem with it, you should trust its gonna stick to the facts. also anyone else here that Robert Englund said that Billy Bob Thornton should be Freddy Kruger.

Freddy not cracking jokes? His sick jokes as he kills people with tools from their own nightmares was a pretty important and memorable thing. Fuck these douchebags and their stupid shit.

#10 you are made of WIN.

Meh...I was kind of hoping to keep the whole VS crossover thing going. AVP, Freddy VS Jason, Hellraiser Prophecy (well, its kind of a crossover) we can smash so many other movies together that it should be decades before we start re-envisioning movies. That being said though, Dawn of the Dead was a sweet remake of Dawn of the Dead

First off Robert Englund is Freddy Krueger with or with out the makeup take a good look at him. "This is REALLy the "Xerox" generation" You can not keep on re-making movie that have all ready finished that's just plainly lazy. and having any one else play Freddy Krueger is just B.S. and especially Billy Bob Thornton.

Okay, first off, if they reinvent Nightmare on Elm Street, they will have to use someone else as Freddy. Especially if it's going to be strictly horror. In my opinion, not that it means a lot, the first one and wes cravens new nightmare were the best, and they were scarier. The rest were campy, cheese fests, which I admittedly still shelled out cash for, but still.
On Billy Bob playing Freddy... I'll have to see that. But I once said no one would be able to top Jack Nicholson's role as the joker. And when I heard Heath Ledger would be doing the part, I said, "What kind of drugs is the director on?" I bitched like a fat cop with no donuts. But Heath surprised everyone. I'll look at Billy Bob's complete transformation in sling blade, and say... "It's possible" He's got some acting skills definitely. I think they'll pick someone who can pull it off, and if they're lucky, they'll get something that is better in some way. With Jason voorheez(Spell check), and Michael Meyers, they just had to put a mask on someone, and neither one of them talk. Freddy has to be scary in am entirely different way.
Let's be honest though. How scary would a re-envisioned Nightmare on Elm street really be with Robert England in it, when you're expecting him to crack up with some sick, sarcastic remark every ten minutes and he doesn't. No, this has to be completely redone from scratch. And that means a new actor.
And I have to say that I'm envisioning Billy Bob's already goblin-like face now with an evil grin and some bad burns, and it's a frightening image. Who knows? If it does suck though, I'll be one of he first ones to laugh and make fun of them, as will the rest of the world, so they'd better be careful.

This is James Gilks (owner of SerialKillerCalendar.com). Let me start by saying that I love Robert Englund. He is a talented actor and a treasure to the horror industry. That said, I really hope that he is not cast as Freddy in the new Nightmare on Elm St remake. I understand that this is practically blasphemy in the horror fan community. It is tantamount to saying that Hellraiser 1 was slow and poorly made (which it is but thats another story). The truth is that Freddy Kruger has the potential to be one of the most terrifying and truly lasting characters in horror movie history. He is a serial killer pedophile with knifes for fingers that can get to you at your most vulnerable (when your sleeping). This is pure nightmare fuel (no pun intended) and put in the right hands, this franchise could be reborn as something extremely horrific that will stand the test of time. Now, Robert Englund brings a great humor to the role and helps to dull the edge of the atrocities on the screen. I love this and the original Nightmare on Elm St series is one of my favorites. But is that really what we want? Do we truly need the horror and sheer disturbingness of this character desensitized by one liners and cheep visual gags. I honestly don’t think we do. I am hoping for a gritty, in your face realism that paints Freddy as the monster he really is. I think we would be far more impacted if the film makers drew their inspiration from real life pedophile serial killers such as Albert Fish, Peter Kurten or Carl Panzram. What we need now, in these cold and uncaring times, is a Freddy Kruger that doesn’t pull any punches. We need truly dark and devious creature who can transform our once terrifying bogyman in to something that will really give us nightmares. And, unfortunately, I just don’t think Robert Englund (who I mean no offense to) can bring us this.

Well, that’s just the opinion of someone who runs a company devoted to selling serial killer merchandise so you can take it or leave it. I hope you can all stop by SerialKillerCalendar.com to pick up some morbid merch (including the new Serial Killer Magazine, Serial Killer Trading Cards and Serial Killer Action Figures. I know, its a shameless display of self promotion but really, I have to justify reading up on Batman Movies while I am supposed to be working somehow.
