Dec 24 2008'9' Feature Film Makes '9' Short So Much More Marketable to Key Demos

9-trailer.jpg

Shane Acker's dialogue-free 2005 film, 9, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short (hey, here it is). Hollywood couldn't help but notice how charming and marketable the post-apocalyptic ragdoll stars were, and was like, "Alright, Shane, how about you make this into a feature film? One thing though: maybe to 'punch it up' a bit, add dialogue, and have that dialogue be read by notable celebrities. And make the lead character a puppy that wears sunglasses."

Here's the trailer:

So he dodged the sunglasses-wearing-puppy clause, but he did have to add all the celebrity voices. Probably better off for it--a feature-length film about a small, lens-eyed protagonist in a garbage-strewn, post-apocalyptic world would never work without heavy reliance on dialogue.

(Thanks, Andrew, though actual links to these things would have been great too.)

Not bad.

im lovin that welcome home by coheed

Hey man, sorry there weren't any links, I was in a hurry and was crazy stoked. I think this will be really good, a pot-fueled good time if anything. Next thing that comes your way I'll have links for sure

Nice trailer. Tim Burton at its best.

@4.... Shane Acker at his best... Burton just produced. This is Shane Acker's vision.... aside from some very small things I don't really see Burton in this at all. Besides... Burton just ripped off old German expressionists... go watch The Cabinet of Dr. Caligary and you'll see where Burton found his style.

Never seen that kind of cinematography in an animated movie before. The angles are fantastic, and the general feel is great. This is the first I've heard of this but im already excited.

Hey I watched this trailer this morning but I just saw Tim Burton produced it.
Now it's even more awsome! Yay! And Malcom's right- bitchen camera angles

Anyone feel like this is Fallout 3 meets Little Big Planet only three years ahead?

Spectacular short film, but why would anyone think they should add dialogue to it? (Didn't everybody else get the jist of it?) Or that there should be a feature length version at all? This guy could just as easily make more sequel shorts on his own. Are people really that stupid that they won't buy a ticket to see a movie if it doesn't have cheesey, cliched lines and big stars in it?

Let's see... little-known animator, making independent short films, gets a chance to adapt one of his creations for a widely-distributed big screen version that could potentially make him the successful filmmaker he's probably dreamed of being since he was a kid..... Yeah why would he bother?

Okay... whose audio track is that? Anyone know?

Honestly, not hating on Coheed and Cambria, but this picture shouldn't be supplied by Welcome Home. It deserves something abit more epic or just more orchestral. But, I will admit that when I heard the intro to Welcome Home, I felt as if it just belong with the film. Along with the short orchestral bit that played briefly.

As for the film content, I hope it has the type of world of discovery feeling that Wall-e started out with. The same type of "What happend here?" and "What is the world like?" wonderment of the start much like wall-e. Now mix it in with the two movie like quality with the matrix. The half post-appocalyptic-war-with-machine/half-awesome-I-can't-believe-that-happend action movie that made the matrix successful. Now mix it in with the lord of the rings style epicness, and we my friends, have movie of the year.

Let's just hope it doesn't bring in the Pan's Labyrinth style "expect one movie, get another" style advertising. Seriously, I want a matrix made for this decade. One ruined by parents expecting a slightly more darker pixar film.

Here's to a PG-13 rating! God forbid they turn this into a kids movie....

@#10 Brian,

Screw the 'success.' And the money. Suppose you were drawing or painting one of the best artworks you ever created, and then someone else comes along and says, "I think you should do it like this," and starts dicking around with your shit.

Now, I'm not saying this looks like a bad movie. On the contrary. It looks like it could be one of the best animated films. But why does everything have to have big-time stars involved to be 'successful'? Independent films don't get distributed as widely, or make as much money, but they are the product of the intellect of the creator and not studio execs and producers.

@14 - JL

Fuck that, I'd take the money. I can always create more shit anyways and, with more money, build, expand, and distribute my creativity like never before.

The opening music is from 'The Captain' by The Knife.

(If anyone cares.)

Astonishing.

The actors voicing characters in this movie aren't just famous for no reason; they are GOOD actors, which is why they are famous. When an indie film maker gets a chance to do a big release feature version of their dream and they want everything to be perfect, of course hiring incredible actors to do voices is the path taken! Because Tim Burton is directing it, he would basically have the sway to get Shane a ton of funding and access to talented actors.

To do anything else would be like spending years writing a sonata to be played by an orchestra, and then getting a highschool band to play it in front of the world, instead of something like a world famous Philharmonic Orchestra. You want the work to be the best it possibly can be.

And just because they are well KNOWN actors, doesn't mean its selling out and the distribution house thinks that their names are the only thing that will sell the film (sure, for the dumbass masses, it will definitely help!). Think about it this way, there are no pointlessly popular BAD actors doing voices in this film, only proven talented actors, most of whom have been nominated for academy awards at some time or another.

sorry, one other point: this new feature length film looks completely UNtarnished by any 'studio execs' input other than a shitload of money, money required to create and expose an incredible knew film-maker and his work.

That short was amazing. Thanks for linking that.

As far as the dialogue being added to the feature length film, I'm sure it will be used sparingly. Burton & Acker know what they're doing (most of the time), so I expect them to treat this film with respect.

This has rocketed to near the top of my list of Films I'm Looking Forward To in '09.

@14....

How do you know the studio didn't offer him the ability to fully realize his vision for this story? Do you know how hard it is to do a feature film with a limited crew/time/budget, etc...

Could be the short is just a portion of the story Acker was dying to tell....

Well, I didn't liked the short movie but I must admit that trailer looks to be entertaining. I am just glad that Tim Burton isn't directing it, I hate his movies (apart from Edward Scissorhands).

I hope to God Tim Burton doesn't cock this up

This makes me want to play Oddworld.

Okay, yes, those actors lending their voices are more than big names, they're big names accompanied by much, much talent.

However, this trailer seems to play this up as an action flick with all the exploding shit and the metal music. This is not the same impression I got when watching the original short. Yes, there was a noticeable amount of action in that, but it wasn't the meat of the story.

And just because the actors are talented, doesn't mean their voice acting will come off well. Not only that, but voice acting isn't something you just do, unless you're a living cartoon like Robin Williams. It's its own craft. There are numerous professionals out of work who could better serve the quality of this film who are out of work because the known actors sell the tickets. They will be distinquishible voices, because we've all seen their movies, but voices from lesser-known or unknown actors can be just as good if not better. GTA IV, though a hugely anticipated video game, utilized the talents of unknowns and it came off brilliantly. Also, The Incredibles used the lesser-known Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter as the main voice actors. Samuel Jackson and Jason Lee played second fiddle, and neither of them is a top-notch talent.

And by the way,

The voices of Michael Clarke Duncan, Burt Reynolds, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Val Kilmer, and Freddie Prinze Jr. couldn't put people in the seats for Delgo.

Burton's name is just a stamp.
He's producing this, not directing it.
It shows that he is financially and creatively supporting this film.
This does not necessarily mean that he has any actual influence towards it.
Pleasing, nonetheless.

Shiny large familiar names to add incentive and the ability to relate for lazy morons.

Tim burton sucks dick and so will this "movie".

This movie deserves a PG-13 + rating. If they turn this into a Disney load of crap I will never attempt to see this movie. On a lighter note, I'm glad to hear that Coheed gets movie cred because after the deal with them and Transformers, Transformers can blow me!!!

Hm, I see animation isn't immune to the post-apocalyptic trend. Sweetness. I'd pay to see it. Now, how 'bout pitching an animation featuring zombies and stuff? Y'know. For little'uns, and completely separate from Res Evil: Degeneration. That'd be a family event. ;)

@27 happy to see Mr. Burton himself here, but aren't you being a little overcritical of your production a tad too soon. Give yourself a chance.

At first I though this would suck the big one, but trailer looks promising.

TIM BURTION IS NOT DIRECTING THIS-- THE CREATOR OF THE ORIGINAL SHORT "9", SHANE ACKER IS.

I swear, it perturbs me to no end when people keep getting this wrong. Burton's name is to simply help boost the film's chances to do well. I've seen the short film and it was fantastic; I hope that the feature can live up to the feel and the atmosphere of the original, despite the voices.

The trend towards "voice-actors-who-double-as-names-on a-poster" movie star casting in animated films really sucks for the great talent that does voice work as a living, and I think the audience is worse off, too.

The music for this trailer is jarringly out of place for the mood of the original short.

Don't know why people are so hung up on Burton's involvement in this are missing the real concern - there's someone from Wanted attached to this. Yeah, they can adapt source maaterial gooood.

And @ 5: Yes, Burton was heavily influenced by the German expressionists, but there's a lot in Burton films that's not in the expressionist films, and he has acknowledged his dept to expressionism. He's not simply "ripping off" anything. He hasn't been particularly exciting in recent years, but that's a whole 'nother discussion.

@8: That is EXACTLY what I thought.

Funny.

Little Big Planet the Movie?

Music is done by Danny Elfman.
No wonder the trailer sounds amazing. (with the addition of The Knife)

If you enjoy Coheed...wipe off that mascara (boy for girl), remove your snake bikes, ungreasifiy your tangle shit knots, and try to be less of a bizarre pastiche of prep/fag/emo/metal ....because if there were ever a group of people that needed to be cleansed from existence...its you guys!

Death be unto you.

More like LBP is "9" - The Game
