Nov 24 2008Vampire Teen Romance is Really Popular
Why your local theater felt like a Forever 21 this weekend:
1. Twilight - $70.6 million. This is why I'm really glad we didn't pass that proposal that would let 13-year-old girls vote.
2. Quantum of Solace - $27.4 million. Now we've seen how Bond competes against vampires at the box office, but what about if he actually fought vampires? I still think he'd do OK.
3. Bolt - $27 million. I always said people would pay to hear John Travolta's voice in any form, but it turns out I may have been wrong. I might have to reconsider my personalized John Travolta voicemail business plan.
4. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa - $16 million. Spoiler alert: Madagascar escapes 2 Africa.
5. Role Models - $7.2 million. I'm too transfixed by this vampire's icy stare to come up with anything about Role Models.

You can't blame the teenage girls they have no brains these days.
7. Pepper - November 24, 2008 8:58 PM
i'm not a teenager, and i saw Twilight 5 times. >_>
i have to admit, i love the books, and Kristen, and Rob...gosh.
The movie could have been better, could have been a LOT worse, so i'm happy. it broke records, which is what i was hoping for.
SUCK THAT WB! fucking pull Harry Potter because you think you'll make more money next summer? how do you like dem'apples!
*attempts to regain composure*
You should give the movie a chance, i mean, my friend (who is a male) liked it. he wasn't even just saying that to be nice. well, maybe he is trying to get in my pants. where was i going with this again?
8. Rossi - November 24, 2008 11:35 PM
Dear "Pepper,"
Undeveloped stock characters and predictable plot do not make quality literature. Do yourself a favor and pick up some Stoker or Shelley. Also, Hannah Montana has broken records at the box office. Congrats--you pretty much just reinforced not only the idiocy of teen girl obsessions, but of those who, by now, should have out-grown that.
9. Pepper - November 25, 2008 12:37 AM
dear Rossi,
i did not imply that "breaking records" meant "good movie", i simply said it was what i was "hoping for". Surely you must have a higher reading comprehension that THAT to be able to work them new-fangled computer-machines.
Twilight is an enjoyable read. i never said or inferred anything different, or more. i have read Bram Stoker's Dracula countless times, and i read Mary Shelley in my lit-class. oohhh-ahhh throw around some big names, makes you smerrrt.
suck 'Frankenstein's monster's cock you pompous windbag.

I have yet to see Twilight, but I have read all the books and I do plan on seeing it just to see how they interpreted the book. I'm not a teen-obsessed girl, and I do read things other than HP and Twilight; why should we "out-grow" something that we like? What's so wrong with indulging from time to time? Personally, I also enjoy poetry from Anne Sexton, I love Shakespeare and Poe, I enjoy non-fiction (try Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson, it's a very nice read) as well as fiction. So all this about "teen-girl obsessed," maybe that's the majority, but you shouldn't lump everyone who sees and enjoys this movie in to that category. That would be like saying all Trekkies are virgins.
11. gogirlwonder - November 25, 2008 11:18 AM
Aren't all trekkies virgins? :p

You are so funny! Like I can't even stand it!
Lmfao, "Why your theater felt like a Forever 21 this weekend". So funny! I would have never even thought of that, fucking brilliant!

i'm 28, have a BS in math and loved Twilight. it's entertaining and different. much more intelligent plot than whatever is usually popular, like Spiderman or the same old trite super hero stuff. but because women like it, it's trash, right? cuz women are stupid sex toys who shouldn't get to have a movie! let's all go watch a cartoon about talking dogs, that's fine, but oh no! not an attractive male lead! all of you men can't bear the thought. the judgement of this movie is hilarious to me, what a bunch of jealous hypocrites.
14. Adelle - November 27, 2008 2:33 PM
You cannot judge a movie or book if you haven't read it just because its target audience is teenage girls. that doesn't mean others are not allowed to enjoy the Twilight saga as well. i am in college and i read all the books and fell in love because of the vampire theme and the incredable detail writing. my boyfiend saw how much i love the series and volenteered to read them as well and enjoyed them. we went to the movie and both liked it a lot. girls can enjoy the action and horror movies but when it comes to a romance, most guys get their egos so far up their asses, that they are no way going to compromise their "manly-ness" to see or admit to enjoying a movie like that. did you notice the amazing cars in the movie? yeah we can appreciate those too. its the gender roles in society that make guys have that shovanistic attitude. get off your high horse and stop judging people for their interests in movies or books, no matter what they may be.

Notice how the twilight supporters have bad grammar/ awful spelling/ never been introduced to the concept of capitalization? Speaks for itself, really.
16. adelle - November 28, 2008 9:29 PM
to "eggs" -- wow. you are going to generalize the entire pop. of a specific series of books on my bad typing and spelling? we are writing our opinions on a website. we really need to capitalize? this is not a disertaion. go fuck yourself, its the only thing you are getting. :P
17. Brooser - November 29, 2008 2:52 AM
I liked the books, and I'm a 19-year-old guy -- they were an enjoyable read, and I think Stephenie Meyer is a pretty creative and engaging writing. No, they're not God's gift to literature, but that doesn't mean I'm not allowed to like them. The movie was alright; a little cheesy in parts and I really would have liked someone other than Pattinson as Edward (not to mention some better special effects). Overall, though, I think it was decent, and better than a lot of other movies based on popular books.
Really, you can't judge something if you haven't read/seen it. =P I have no problem with people who genuinely didn't like it after reading it, i.e. were able to make informed opinions rather than broad generalizations based solely on assumptions/hearsay.

I am a 26 year old female and medical professional. I have not read or seen Twilight and I really don't plan to do so. I am not opposed to reading the book or seeing the movie, but I am honestly pretty vampired-out. That being said, my 50 year old father is a movie buff- sees most new movies when they come out (he's single so he can afford to do that) and an intellectual. Because he wanted a comparison, he read the Twilight book before going to see the movie. He said that they were a bit shallow, but otherwise not too bad. Not all fans fit into the cookie-cutter.

Surprised at the rabid fangirlism and utter stupidity. I need to get out of here before my brian disintegrates too.

I have to admit, i loved twilight and totally obsessed over it, but you see girls at school with like quotes and stuff all over their books and they can relate eveything to twilight. It's so pathetically sad and i can't wait for this fad to be over so we can get back to way more interesting things. not just twilight this and twilight that. i mean, come on!
21. Elizabeth - April 17, 2009 11:56 PM
Wow its amazing how everyone must defend themselfs on their reading is. My opinion is those who like the movie and enjoy the books, keep seeing the movies and reading the books. And those who don't should bite their tounge and read what they want. every person has an opinion and if your really bothered by peoples intrest then got to Anartica so you can go and complain about the penguins at least they can't complain back. oh and by the way "eggs" your missing the word have in your first post. way to gripe about other spelling, grammer, and capitalization when your forgeting common word. Now go ahead and complain about my freaking post because i know some hater is dying to!
