Nov 14 2008New 'Watchmen' Trailer!
This Watchmen trailer is going to knock you on your nerdy ass. It will knock your books out of your arms, shove you in a locker, and make you do its homework, but you'll still pathetically ask it to come to your birthday party:
So good. And by good I mean accurate in recreating scenes, which I hope will translate to something good.

So Freakishly cool,I cannot hold my excitement. And,nice touch on using the same music they used in the first GTA IV soundtrack.
2. Fizz - November 14, 2008 10:47 AM
AWESOME!
This is great bc for those who out there who havent read the GN they get a little hint of the plot...I'll bet the other trailer was kind of confusing to them.
3. jled - November 14, 2008 10:51 AM
this just kicked me in the face breaking my taped thick black glasses ;)
4. staceface - November 14, 2008 10:58 AM
Loved it! I haven't read the GN yet so it actually gave me an idea as to the plot and it looks even better! Loved the use of MUSE!!
5. scooby - November 14, 2008 11:02 AM
i have such a hard on right now.
6. K lee - November 14, 2008 11:12 AM
Aweshum. Finally, no Smashing Pumpkins.
7. Julian - November 14, 2008 11:14 AM
loved it , but don't remember them ever calling themselves Watchmen.
8. RAVAGE - November 14, 2008 11:22 AM
Batman, Superman, and Spiderman are sitting at a bar...
Spiderman: You heard of these new guys "WATCHMEN"?
Batman: Yeah, they are a bunch a wanna be superheros. They are supposed to appeal to the more intelligent comic book reader.
Superman: (Deep sigh)
Spiderman: Think we have anything to worry about?
Batman: Hell no... most people have never heard of them... Did you see any kids running around at halloween dressed like them?
Superman: (sniffle)
Spiderman: So we are still going to be the top dogs in the superhero world?
Batman: Yeah we are the top, our movies grossed more money than most small countries even have. Hell my last one isnt even on DVD... yet.
Superman: (head on bar... crying)
Spiderman: Whats the problem?
Superman: My movie sucked...and people liked Hancock better than me, and he is just a drunk!
Batman: Oh shut up or do I have to call your mommy in Smallville.
9. JSTFU - November 14, 2008 11:46 AM
@7. It's because they didn't.
I read this thing every year for the past 15 years in the hopes that I will understand why the rest of you love it so much. I get the story, it's the one that they stole and used in Independence Day......me vs you turned into us vs them, but it's way over-rated.
The first trailer I saw made me actually want to see it, and I think it's because no one talked. It was all action. The dialogue itself, and the weak delivery in the trailer just show how uninteresting the characters are.
I was really hoping for a V For Vendetta type adaptation, in which all of the useless bullshit is cut out and a solid streamlined story that is true to the core, yet somewhat fresh details would be used. But, based on the trailers, it looks as if it's going to be very true to the actual scenes, dialogue, and panel for panel adaptation. Bor-ing!
What about the Tales of the Black Freighter portion? Is that part cut out? And, that goofy line "Just a matter of time I suppose." What in the hell is that? The whole point of that scene in the comic is that we don't know it's one man. The cops speculate that it had to be two or more because of the Comedian's weight and the thickness of the glass. If we see it's one dude, then we limit the suspects to what, two guys in the story, and one doesn't wear clothes?
What I mean is that while "we", those in comic fandomland know the story, those that are exposed to it for the first time, the story is less of a mystery for them.
I'm not giving up hope that Snyder can turn this around for me, but based on what I've seen so far, I'm going back to being negatively suspect on this. I do hope however, that those that love the comic book series, love the movie as well.
I'll read James Robinson's The Golden Age again. Or at the very least, I'll read Moore's Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? for like the zillionth time. Those, I really like.
10. JSTFU - November 14, 2008 11:49 AM
@8.
Dude, no one liked Hancock. They just got tricked into seeing it the opening weekend because of Will Smith.
Hancock was the worst movie I've seen this year. Oh, check that. It's #2. Blow-verfield was the worst.
You are right though, Superman Returns did suck.
11. Atrides - November 14, 2008 11:51 AM
I'm deliberatly not watching this so the full kick-ass experiance will be that much more... kick-ass! when I see in in theaters.
12. Julian - November 14, 2008 11:58 AM
I don't really see the correlation between Watchmen and Independence day at all. but I guess all connections are open to interpretation.
The reason why they cut the black freighter out of the movie is because otherwise the movie would have been too convoluted and confusing for people that haven't read the book. that i can kind of understand though a principle foundation of the story relies on that second story.
I will def. agree that showing The comedian's murderer's silhouette and the comedian actually talking before the murder is dumb and ruins the whole flow of the introduction. but I was never expecting a perfect carbon copy of the book. also keep in mind that a lot of people never heard of the book and are going to see a superhero movie. A convoluted superhero movie just won't fly with the 'TV>books' crowd.
13. victor - November 14, 2008 11:59 AM
I just came!!
14. Julian - November 14, 2008 12:00 PM
#12 was for #9 BTW
15. Sr Tlacuache - November 14, 2008 12:00 PM
@8
Yes, the Black Freighter is going to be in animated form with the DVD, It will make more sense like that, otherwise it will confuse people who never read the book before.
*spoiler ahead*
Guessing for what I saw, It seem those rumors about the giant squid replaced by atomic bombs are true
16. Eddy - November 14, 2008 12:01 PM
Oh thank god they haven't totally forgotten about nuclear war, which is the point of the whole graphic novel.
17. G - November 14, 2008 12:09 PM
Replacing the Pumpkins with Muse was a fantastic move. Probably one of the best bands that no one really knows (but should) and the song fits that trailer perfectly!
18. Sam - November 14, 2008 12:10 PM
Sweetness
19. Fizz - November 14, 2008 12:13 PM
#12 "I read this thing every year for the past 15 years in the hopes that I will understand why the rest of you love it so much."
Really? Why? You don't have to love. I love it. you don't have to try something 15 times to keep realizing you don't love it.
20. taintrugburn - November 14, 2008 12:27 PM
viedt looks like poop. also, they are never referred to as "the watchmen" in the gn, and this trailer makes it out like they call themselves the watchmen...
still got dat hype tho!
21. Pekod@tx.rr.com - November 14, 2008 12:33 PM
Too bad Rorshach is using the bat voice. That was unnecessary, along with removing the squid.
And we've seen most of this. But it still looks good.
22. immune - November 14, 2008 12:39 PM
** possible spoiler below **
i still think the squid will be in the film and the scene from the new trailer w/ nite owl and silk kissing in front of the nuke is not the rumored new ending for two reasons: 1st, in the gn, there is a panel exactly like that after nite owl and silk attempt to make love, but he can't "perform". they fall asleep together and nite owl has a dream/nightmare in which they end up kissing w/ a nuke going off behind them. go check it out, it is the EXACT same shot. 2nd, do you really think they would take a scene from the end of the movie and put it in the trailer? that would be like showing the scene where harvey dent was knocked off the ledge in tdk. he's on the ground and you can clearly see he is two face. if that was in the trailer, it would have killed a lot of the anticipation, and i think the same is true here. why would snyder go to such trouble to (basically) replicate the gn in such detail, then completely change the ending AND put his new ending in the trailer for us all to see 6 months before it comes out? the trailer nuke scene has got to be from nite owl's dream, period.
23. poophat - November 14, 2008 12:58 PM
the squid is NOT in the movie. snyder has confirmed this. you won't see it. sad, indeed, but also the way of things. while we will all miss the vagina squid, don't expect to be seeing it on the big screen...the new ending is ok, and can work in a hollywood sense, but i think you are going to hear a bunch of groans in the audience from fans of the gn...
24. K lee - November 14, 2008 1:13 PM
#21, what you talkin bout? In the book, Rorschach DID use a deep, fake, grumbly voice. Jackie Earle Harley's Rorschach voice sounds much less ridiculous than Christian Bale's Batman voice, anyway.
25. Uncle Eccoli - November 14, 2008 1:16 PM
Graphic novel... What a wank.
26. emily - November 14, 2008 1:21 PM
if they never referred to themselves as watchmen, the civilians at least did otherwise who wrote "who watches the watchmen?" on the walls?
27. JSTFU - November 14, 2008 1:27 PM
@25..EXACTLY! It's a freaking comic book! I think the only people that refer to comics as graphic novels are those that are ashamed of the medium.
@12.and 16.The correlation between ID and Watchmen is that humanity unites to battle an outside force. It's less about nuclear war than it is stopping the hate between different segments and ethnicities of humanity. THAT is the core theme of the Watchmen.
Humanity forgives the barriers between race and religion when there is a common uniting force to fight against or fear. THIS is why we need the giant squid/vagina/plant thing in the movie. Without it, it's just another take on Dr. Strangleove or Failsafe.
I don't like the comic and I can figure that out.
28. JSTFU - November 14, 2008 1:30 PM
@26..See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quis_custodiet_ipsos_custodes%3F
It's in reference to the government or those that would watch over us. What happens when those that fight corruption and evil become evil and corrupt themselves?
That's truly what the phrase "Who watches the watchmen?" means. Not the name of the group.
29. Gerry - November 14, 2008 1:40 PM
Amazing trailer but then the CoverGirl advertisement totally took me out of it. What was I watching again? Is the Comedian worth it?
30. Chaz - November 14, 2008 1:52 PM
That was phillip glass! Right? From Koyaanisqatsi?... and you guys are concerned about if its muse or smashing pumpkins.
31. Starchasm - November 14, 2008 1:54 PM
I'm still upset they're making the Watchmen look so...well....COOL. The whole draw of the graphic novel was that they were (mostly) retired washed up rejects who seized on one last chance for glory only to find out that in order to save the world they had to let the "bad guy" win. They were endearing specifically because they were just normal people who put on funny costumes and did what they could (with the notable exception of Manhattan). With the exception of Silk they're all supposed to be in their 40's for crying out loud!
Ah well, Hollywood. I want my squid dagnabbit.
32. T.e. - November 14, 2008 3:00 PM
Look at all those long, lengthy posts :) THIS is what movies should be doing to/for us - building on communication...
... and kicking us in the balls. Like the Watchmen will (I still have faith)...
...bummer about the squid, though. I remember, when I first read the comic, that reveal had me so discombobulated, I wasn't sure what was right or wrong in the universe anymore. Now that I'll never get to see it, makes me kinda sad...
33. sully - November 14, 2008 5:46 PM
I know people have commented on this before... but I just want to emphasize how amazing that trailer was because of Muse. I almost shat myself.
34. Asschilee - November 14, 2008 11:19 PM
There is NO WAY I can wait another 4 months to see this... fuck! When Manhattan said " Why would I save a world I no longer had any stake in".. well lets just say i have to change my panties!
35. Sarah - November 14, 2008 11:44 PM
Aye Aye, # 31 and #32.
Time will tell about this.
36. ali - November 15, 2008 12:52 AM
this is the first trailer, that actually made me want to see the movie.
i think it's important to note that no matter what they do with the movie, there are still going to be people who are pissed off. either they change the story line to a movie they can sell the shit out of, or they stick with the original movie, and make something that's not going to be commercially successful. i think this is the mentality in hollywood right now.
but there is hope, as The Dark Knight proved, audiences will watch a dark movie. hopefully this will stay (somewhat) truthful to the graphic novel/comic book.
37. or_pitseleh - November 15, 2008 2:34 AM
i have chills all fucking over.
38. Eru - November 15, 2008 9:06 AM
I love Koyaanisqatsi.
39. Hv00 - November 15, 2008 10:17 AM
I really don't like the fact that it seems like mr.Snyder has yet again gone nuts with the slow motion effects. The tolerable 300 was already packed with them and it looks like things aren't going to change much on that department.
As an effect slow motion would greatly emphasize some of the events that take place in the book but if they are to be used almost everywhere they simply lose too much or even all of their potency. And I'm afraid the whole thing has been overdone again in this movie adaptation of Watchmen.
Of course it could be that these are the only clips from the full movie that use the technique but somehow I doubt that. I hope the rest of the film will turn out better.
40. deadmuffin - November 15, 2008 10:55 AM
I hope they at least put one scene in where rorschach beats the shit out of someone in the bar, just showed how much a badass he is whenever he walks in, the major criminals in the city all tremble "no no no please go away"
and i also hope they put veidts line in where he says "why would i tell you this if you had any way off stopping me...i did it 30 minutes ago" I would just have a nerdgasm if it was in it
41. chuck - November 15, 2008 1:40 PM
film looks awesome!
and i definitely have to commend them on using "Take a Bow"...Muse is the best band no one's ever heard of.
42. victor - November 15, 2008 2:26 PM
I love muse too, and all, but they're not *that* unheard of.
43. rorschachbeans - November 15, 2008 2:40 PM
Firstly, I agree with #9 about the dialog limiting the suspects. Hopefully that will be a flash back scene at the end of the movie after everything has been solved.
Secondly, a graphic novel? come on. Watchmen was a comic. pure and simple. Call it what it is. Enough with the highfalutin euphemisms already.
Lastly. I got chills watching this. I can't wait for Mach.
44. jimbob - November 15, 2008 2:42 PM
This looks shit.
@ #17 & #41:
You are kidding right? Is there anyone aged 14-18 who isn't completely obsessed with Muse? In the UK at least they're the most popular band around for people with not particularly discerning musical taste.
45. someone - November 15, 2008 4:07 PM
jimbob: last time i checked, this was an American site hosted at .com not .uk. yeah, muse is awesome, but in the U.S. they aren't as popular as most bands and usually the people that love them (like myself) have better taste in music than the people that follow britney spears and kid rock. also, last time i looked, there was tons of crap music coming out of your country......
46. JSTFU - November 15, 2008 4:43 PM
Regardless of whomever knows or doesn't know about Muse, the use of their music in movie trailers is a good one.
Hell, "Shrinking Universe" made 28 Weeks Later look like a sweet thing to go see. And then, it came out. I'd rather watch the trailer again than to be subjected to that turd of a movie even once more.......all because of Muse.
Oh, and I'm from the U.S. and over 30 years of age. lol
47. jimbob - November 15, 2008 7:42 PM
@45:
You do realise Muse are English right? Wait, let me rephrase that as a statement of fact. You don't realise Muse are English, and you just made an arse out of yourself. There, much better.
48. Ed - November 16, 2008 3:03 AM
As much heat as I'm going to get from this, I personally don't mind them taking Vagface out of the movie and replacing it with bombs, so long as the story arc of "the world uniting to take out a common threat" is kept.
Don't know how it will WORK, per se, but hey, it can happen.
49. ans - November 16, 2008 6:44 PM
I thought Rorshach spoke in a monotone voice.
50. tc - November 16, 2008 7:40 PM
The trailers are abso-fucking-lutely fantastic. I fear, however, that poor acting is going to let this film down.
Rorschach doesn't sound right. Jupiter doesn't look right. Ozymandias looks effetely gay (in the novel, there is nothing more than an allusion).
BTW, to anyone who thinks I shouldn't use the word 'novel' (including Alan Moore), think about the etymology of the word comic. Doesn't fit. Graphic novel. Fits.
51. Korey - November 16, 2008 11:56 PM
Wow I just got a boner!
52. ans - November 17, 2008 12:08 AM
I also thought they'd augment Billy Crudup's voice.
53. Comic Guy - November 17, 2008 3:51 AM
A comic is generally a series of books that come out monthly, bi monthly, whatever......on a regular basis. For Watchmen, it was a comic series that came out over a long period of time due to late shipping. Still, it was a comic book series. Sometimes prestige format issues are mistaken for graphic novels also because of their square bound nature.
Comics that are collected after the initial printing are sometimes bound in a collected format and are sometimes mistakenly referenced as graphic novels. They are not. They are tradepaperbacks.
A graphic novel is an original sequential art story, very similar to a comic book, but usually square bound and published in a larger volume. An example would be the original X-Men graphic novel, God Loves, Man Kills.
Hope that clears it up for those that mistakenly call tradepaperbacks and comic books "graphic novels".
54. TooDarkMark - November 17, 2008 12:24 PM
I have read the series at least 30 times over the last 20 years and have a deep deep love of the source material. I could talk about it for hours, and all it's depth and hidden meanings and such. With that being said...
I am really tired of these nerds who think somehow certain changes are blasphemous. I can live without the squid, I can live without them being called the Crimebusters, I can live with highly stylized action sequences, and I can deal with Manhattan revelaing a possible nuclear war to Laurie before Mars. These fan geeks think that somehow Zach didn't fight long and hard to stay as close to the original material as he could. You think Hollywood would allow a movie with JUST 5 million people dying in NYC due to a Squid? ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!?!
This was going to be a movie set in modern day and be based on the global war on terror. They were going to have a battle with terrorists on the Statue Of Liberty. Zach fought for this movie to be as close to the souce material as he possibly could, but if a studio gives you 100 million, they expect certain things.
These nerds who have never fought a battle with Hollywood corperate can bitch all they want, and I'll just be happy Zach did what he could do.
55. Amy - November 17, 2008 4:08 PM
Obviously, "visionary" means "has found the fast- and slow-motion effect buttons".
Good thesis from comic guy on the graphic novel/trade paperback distinction. However, I think "graphic novel" can be applied to most limited-run series when collected - after all, you would call Charles Dickens' books "novels", even though many of them were first published in serial form. In The Sandman, for example, the first collections were simply collections of individual issues, but some of the later arcs - Brief Lives or The Kindly Ones - were conceptualised in terms of the "trade paperback" being the optimal form (although this did leave more than a few loyal series readers feeling a bit ripped off with issues that weren't satisyingly self-contained).
Long story short, decrying those who wank on about graphic novels are being just as snobby as those they criticise.
Also Muse are not all that, and are very well-known. I did enjoy the bitching match up there at #44/45:
44: "In the UK at least they're the most popular band around for people with not particularly discerning musical taste."
45: "yeah, muse is awesome [I especially love that you somehow think that "for people with not particularly discerning musical taste" is an endorsement of awesomeness] , but in the U.S. they aren't as popular as most bands and usually the people that love them (like myself) have better taste in music than the people that follow britney spears and kid rock."
Who is following Kid Rock these days? You need to update your "crap pop music" references. And I'm really not sure if I would prefer to listen to Muse or Britney, if I was forced to choose. The soundtrack so far revealed in these trailers is really not impressing me, which is not promising considering I already hate Snyder. However, points for a trailer that actually gives you some notion of what the movie is about, rather than just, "We can assure you there will be explosions."
56. Starchasm - November 18, 2008 2:02 PM
"You think Hollywood would allow a movie with JUST 5 million people dying in NYC due to a Squid? ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!?!"
Did you by any chance see Cloverfield?
They didn't have to make it a "squid" per se, but the entire idea was to unite the ENTIRE WORLD against an extraterrestrial threat. It wasn't to unite part of the world against another part, or most of the world against whatever is left. That's why Veidt's plan was such genius. He had to create something that didn't exist in order to provide people with incontrovertible proof that it did.
I don't care if it's a squid, a meteor, Yog Sothoth, or a spaceship, just make it something that isn't found on earth so that the plan actually makes sense.
57. Jaee - November 21, 2008 3:48 AM
Man, Im so excited for this,
Here's hoping they don't fuck it up.
58. Tahmmie - November 21, 2008 10:53 PM
The trailer looks ok but will reserve judgment until I see the flick.
59. mjblink - November 24, 2008 5:21 PM
compared to the first trailer this one isn't that awesome aside from including rorschach's awesome line at the end.
60. Ouroboros - February 9, 2009 3:51 AM
I really have no idea why everyone is making such a big deal out of Muse. Granted they are awesome, but my god, it's not like we are talking about some great unknown group, or some group the public has forgotten, like the Velvet Underground or something. Muse has been huge. They had radio play. They were insanely popular in the UK for quite some time. Although I must say... A few songs from "black holes and revelations" would set the perfect dystopian tone for this movie. Excellent choice. And the fact that they used Koyaanisqatsi! Incredible.
Rorschach's voice could be toned down. I always imagined his voice a little rough.. but not a ridiculous growl. I will be a little disappointed if he makes it similar to the dark knight ridiculousness.
Excellent job with the slow-mo... More power to the shiny, as long as the spirit remains the same. The point of the artistry in the illustrations of the novel was the versatility of media! The man mastered many different levels comic book medium! The difference between the illustration of the black freighter inlaid on the more modern illustrations of the watchmen world was subtle beauty. The exploration of the story on yet another breathtaking and visually striking medium would be well in keeping with the spirit of the work. As long as he does not corrupt the character development.. or the incredible story twists.. I will be content. He must bring this story to a generation ignorant of proper plot structure. I am looking forward to this movie. I know.. as a fan.. I will cringe. But a wholly satisfying book to movie adaptation is impossible. I must accept this.
As for the distinction between novel/book/comic/tradepaperback. Who the hell cares? That has absolutely no bearing on the story. Calm yourselves.
(No offense to Comic Guy who explained his point very calmly, thoroughly, and interestingly.)
61. Delirium* - March 6, 2009 12:04 PM
I cannot believe.. That you people are grown adults..
or half of you anyways, And are fighting over a movie.
Personally, if you think the movie is shit, why are you still comming back to argue with the people who do? That's fucking immature and shows your lack of life.
If they are wrong, it's your opinion and no one is going to change 'their' opinion just to save yours. It's fact :/
