Nov 20 2008'Coraline' Trailer Wins
Maybe I'm just a sucker for dark but quirky, masterfully-executed stop-motion animation, but I'm thinking this new trailer for Henry Selick's Coraline adaptation makes it look really good. Perhaps not quite as visually-arrested as The Nightmare Before Christmas, which I still watch religiously every year near Halloween, but charming nonetheless. I'll probably relegate this to being watched every year on a lesser holiday. Which would work best for a movie where a girl travels through a Being John Malkovich-style portal to a parallel world that at first seems nice but eventually gets threatening when her fake mom wants her to sew buttons over her eyes? Probably like a Flag Day.

This is a total fake.
It looks exactly like what Satan showed to Buddha last Easter.
Also, first

Silly Jesus. Everyone knows there is no Buddha.

Mr. IWS writer, are you the same guy I see every year when I got to 'Nightmare' in 3D? I knew it, you're nothing like they say you'd be...

Why does Selick get a "written for the screen by" credit, and Neil Gaiman (the actual author) gets no credit at all?
7. David - November 20, 2008 2:37 PM
@Doug Nelson - That's because Neil didn't write it for the screen, only Selick did. Selick went as far as to ask Neil whether he approved, and Neil told him to add his own characters/spin on it. That info comes straight from Neil during his book tour.
Neil will probably get an "Adapted from" credit.

The trailer is awesome but I didn't realize it was Flag Day today. Humbug.

I like Flag Day, but I think it would be much more fitting on Mother's Day. Do a triple feature, "Coraline", "Psycho", and "Mommy Dearest".

I usually find stop animation movies kind of creepy. Nightmare Before Christmas used to creep me out the most! I like it now but when it first came out... wow! I think that Coraline will be better. I see a lot of cool movies come and go working for Hollywood.com and all, but this one might even reach the Nightmare before Xmas level. It's a bit dark, but not too creepy. Nice find!

^That's weird. My sister has an actual phobia of stop motion animation, especially anything with plasticene. Things like Wallace & Gromit scare the bejesus out of her.

While Selick's credit is accurate, I'm a bit surprised Gaiman isn't considered enough of a celebrity author to get a credit in the trailer.

This trailer is NOTHING like I expected, yet I find myself feeling impressed by it none the less....
I also thought that there would be some mention to Neil during the trailer, but I guess it won't be until the movie is released that that happens.

Y'know, I'm actually quite keen to watch this now. Looks promising. :)

I loved the book but thr trailer just doesn't seem to do anything for me. Coraline is not at all how I expected her to be.
