Oct 28 2008New Kirk/Spock Shot Recreates Old Kirk/Spock Shot, but More Boring
Empire Magazine has released an early look at their upcoming Star Trek cover, wherein they recreate an "iconic" shot of Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner using the new actors playing Spock and Kirk. I have no idea why they wouldn't recreate the classic shot of Spock standing awkwardly in a winter jacket while Kirk, dressed as Bob Villa dressed as Indiana Jones, accosts him in front of a fake tree. Such a classic, iconic shot.

i have a slight feeling that this is going to suck, and it's based on that photograph alone.
fuck you, J.J. Abrams. fuck you.
2. B - October 28, 2008 1:21 PM
umm...
homoeroticism much?
3. Uncle Eccoli - October 28, 2008 1:24 PM
DIE ABRAMS, DIE!!!
4. classic trek fan - October 28, 2008 1:26 PM
yeah...i've seen William Shatner, I've worked with William Shatner (not really), he's no William Shatner.
The other guy is TOTALLY Leonard Nimoy, though.
EW says the opening has something that'll have fans crying "heresy". My theory: Spock will be shown to have Romulan heritage. (Replacing my original theory that Kirk's earliest conquest will be sleeping with his own mother.)

By the way, if you're wondering why the new shot so clearly sucks compared to the original:
1. Shatner & Nimoy
2. it would help if both of the new actors were actually in the same shot, as they were in the original
3. plus if you're going to recreate a shot that obviously uses an angle, how about actually recreating the angle
(how DID they get the new spock to be at an angle (still not the same angle as original) and the new kirk NOT at an angle?)
4. classic trek rocked (rocks) and the new one...well...doesn't.
6. wendy - October 28, 2008 1:41 PM
Yeah the angle is all wrong. Shouldn't trek take a longer break than it has? Shouldn't someone try to create a new sci-fi franchise instead of beating the old ones to death? And based on the recent quality of JJ Abrams work either he has developed too big of an ego to know when he isn't producing good stuff or he just ran out of good ideas and doesn't know it.
When will those kids get off of my lawn?
7. shawn - October 28, 2008 1:43 PM
This looks absolutely horrible.
8. Craig - October 28, 2008 2:07 PM
"Shouldn't someone try to create a new sci-fi franchise...?"
That was called Firefly, and it was fantastic!
9. proteon - October 28, 2008 2:13 PM
Kirk never looked so pretty.
10. wendy - October 28, 2008 2:16 PM
#8, Firefly didn't take off, the fans need to accept this or at least stop bugging those of us who aren't fans. We don't get in your face and tell you how much we didn't care for it all of the time. Sorry I'm just tired of hearing about Firefly.
Let me rephrase my previous statement.
Shouldn't someone work on making more sci-fi franchises.
11. Vince Lombardi - October 28, 2008 2:17 PM
Shitty. Shitttttttteeeeee.
12. Vince Lombardi - October 28, 2008 2:19 PM
@5.
It wouldn't surprise me if one day, an entire movie is shot where none of the actors actually are in the same room together.
13. Uncle Eccoli - October 28, 2008 2:28 PM
@4
We already know he's having the Enterprise built on the surface - that's pretty fucking heretical. The NX Enterprise wasn't even built on the surface. We also know that his whole 'story' is a spin off of a TOS episode. ST veterans are extremely wary of going backwards in the chronology for fear of violating canon - it's downright hopeless with this jackass at the helm. If Paramount were going to let this clown stroke himself over ST they could have at least made him move forward in the chronology. It's going to suck, there's no escaping that, but at least it would've preserved the canon. JJ Abrams is a nostalgia terrorist.
14. Scooby - October 28, 2008 2:37 PM
Bad casting of Kirk. He looks like a boy.
15. Jerome - October 28, 2008 2:38 PM
Wow, that cover version sucks.
16. Jerome - October 28, 2008 2:38 PM
And I agree, they look like kiddies. Ludicrous.
17. Elmo - October 28, 2008 2:56 PM
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
the kids are so grosssss.....
18. wendy - October 28, 2008 2:57 PM
I wonder, does Trek only hold up through the eyes of nostalgia? It doesn't seem like it is passing the test of time or there would have been some decent new content in past decade?
Those are questions not comments or critiques.
19. jimmyboy - October 28, 2008 3:08 PM
This may end up sucking, but i still have a little faith left in Abrams. And it is more apparent that the EW photographer sucks rather than how good or bad the star trek movie wiil be. Abrams won't have them in that much makeup either.
20. Kurt Vile - October 28, 2008 3:10 PM
I don't know what these pictures have to do with each other. On the left, you have the stars of Star Trek, and on the right a gay-porn-version of Spock is leg-humping Zac Efron. Not worried tho, I'm sure the movie will be great.
21. monkeyspank - October 28, 2008 3:40 PM
Sorry, but Sylar looks like a douche.
22. Elmo - October 28, 2008 3:48 PM
@21
they both do, which I noticed after I stoped saying EWWWWWW
23. rustingrabbit - October 28, 2008 3:51 PM
I don't understand how you can recreate a shot with completely different lighting and angles. Either the actors f-cked up the more artsy photos by posing bad, the photographer just plain sucks, or maybe they all lack any real talent.
24. Uncle Eccoli - October 28, 2008 4:08 PM
@23
You've just described this entire film absolutely perfectly.
25. Booo this is dumb - October 28, 2008 4:13 PM
Yep. This generation's stuck in the past and can't think for itself. Not like the tougher older generation which knew what the hell it was doing.
26. Bobeyo - October 28, 2008 4:29 PM
It still bugs me how Dweeb-Kirk is always wearing solid black instead of the classic colors...
27. Bobeyo - October 28, 2008 4:31 PM
Oh, and I second 23 and 24.
28. Jay - October 28, 2008 4:39 PM
I guess I am one of the few who is interested in how this movie will turn out.
At the same time, I am not an official Trekkie. Maybe that's why I am not as sensitive about what they are doing to the classic.
29. Luke - October 28, 2008 7:05 PM
ridiculous. the recreated photos looks like a poster for tween magazine.
there's none of that sci-fi mystery conveyed through the angle, poses and low key lighting of the original.
30. Dennis - October 28, 2008 7:42 PM
Wow...I was interested in this movie...and probably still will...but this picture makes me very, very worried.
31. Snoodle - October 28, 2008 10:04 PM
Lol @ #2. I know right XD
32. KingPlum - October 29, 2008 12:33 AM
Is this an actual photo of the new guys or is Empire Magazine openly using Photoshop to recreate the image. Crappyness of the image is far less of a concern to me, though than crappyness of it's contents. I mean Shatner and Nimoy have some freaking gravitas. Those a-holes on the right are clothing catalog models.
Now a movie I would gladly pay $8 to watch? 77 year old William Shatner beating the pretty off of 28 year old Chris Pine. You know he could do it, too. And, for a finishing move, Shatner's ego could just sit on Pine, crushing his highlighted ass to death.
33. Grock - October 29, 2008 2:49 AM
Another problem with the new photo is too much phototshop. I don't mean the FAKE, shadows all wrong, Never Back Down photoshop; rather, the marketing idea that everyone must have freakishly smooth skin. Quinto's face doesn't even look like that, they've 'shopped it beyond recognition.
Sure Quinto and Pine are playing younger versions, but The Shat and Nimoy look better because they look... human. They not only have pores, but also (gasp) wrinkles when they scrunch their brow.
Last note, the photos make Pine's Kirk look douchey, not cocky like Shat's Kirk. Maybe he'll play better in the movie.
34. doogs - October 29, 2008 3:04 AM
old school spock/kirk way hotter than new school spock/kirk.

35. Keith Maher - October 29, 2008 10:14 AM
They should have put Star Trek to rest with Gene, it's lost the message that used to make it such a unique experience... now it's a sad cash cow milking the corpse of Roddenberrys ideas.
36. TetraShiva - October 29, 2008 12:52 PM
I don't even like Star Trek and this looks really bad... and WB-esque.
37. jimmyhoffascorpse - October 29, 2008 6:56 PM
awww looks like fanboys reenacting their favourite shot. adorable.
38. roswell - October 30, 2008 5:29 AM

39. Amy - October 30, 2008 1:59 PM
This shit looks like High School Musical 7: Rockin in Outer Space
I'm not even a Trekkie and I think Kirk looks like a complete asshat.
40. Narcissist - November 2, 2008 5:58 AM
Doesn't look like they're actually in the same pic. Maybe they warp into an M.C. Escher universe or something where perspectives are all mixed up.
Is Spock making a pass at Kirk in the new one?
How do they get all the charisma out of it like that? Is there a computer program that can remove charisma and presence from images?
41. Marius - November 3, 2008 6:05 PM
That Kirk looks way too young. Almost like a little brat.
Spock is great but the old kirk is much better.
42. StarTrekSucks - November 5, 2008 3:17 PM
Left picture caption; Kirk-"theres a light bulb out" Spock-"Do you know how to change it?" Kirk-"I know how to get someone to change it!"
Right picture caption; Spock "Your'e but cheeks feel so tight, are you squeezing them?" Kirk' "No, I've been working out alot, all muscle pal!"
Spock-"Oh yeah, well I have alot of different powers" Kirk- "Oh Yeah, well I have really bad luck and made out with Lindsay Lohan!"

I think both version are great. I've seen Star Trek 2009 and it is totally captivating. Right now, I'm looking on a chance to get the older Star Trek version where both Kirk and Spock are still original.
The newer version of Kirk and Spok is really gorgeous, however both the older version have a distinctive features that make them hard to forget.
