Oct 29 2008Misguided Petition Hopes to Save Terrence Howard's 'Iron Man 2' Role
Some people who care an enormous amount about Iron Man acting continuity have started a petition to get Terrence Howard back the role he lost to Don Cheadle. Here it is, in its entirety:
Terrence Howard will need to be in Iron Man 2, or else Continuity will destroy the entire Franchise. Show your support, and sign!
Two days later, this section was added for clarification:
Its obvious. You don't replace major characters in summer block buster movies. Just plain stupid
Well, that's a solid, well-written argument, except for that Dark Knight did replace a major character, and some would consider that movie both a blockbuster and not just plain stupid. Is that all you've got? Surely there must be more motivation for convincing Marvel to let Howard tkeep the role. Let's take a look at the webpage someone seriously made, HowardNotCheadle.com (via Latino Review):
Marvel is under the impression that just any person can play Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes. They are sadly mistaken.Marvel asked Terrence Howard to be Rhodey. He signed on to play Rhodey. Terrence Howard became Rhodey.
We were under the impression that when you signed a contract with someone, it was their word.
Yeah! I'm just a guy on the internet saying things, but what about that contract I've never read! We had your word, I assumed!
Yeesh. It's time to accept that there's probably a legitimate reason Terrence Howard was dropped from the film (like how he says crazy things), and that Don Cheadle is now Rhodey. Like all other casting changes, you'll probably eventually be OK with it. Just think how we once thought Michael Keaton was the definitive Batman, but now when you hear "Dark Knight", you just think Val Kilmer. You'll get used to it.

I really think they should cast Gary Coleman instead. Go for the comic side kick element missing from the first film. Hell, replace Paltrow with Wanda Sykes or Sherri Sheppard (maybe both) and give IronMan some soul, brutha!

I'm SURE no one will agree with me, but I saw Iron Man and I wasn't impressed at all... I thought the running time was bullshit, I thought it was boring, and nothing stood out as it being above any other stupid comic book movie out there... so... fuck you Iron Man, you do NOT have my vote

Geez, just let hopers hope and dreamers dream. Cheadle is gonna be in the role already, why not just let the petition be. Such sarcasm and hate...goodness. Whats so wrong about wanting continuity. Dark Knight was lucky, it won't work everytime.

This is exactly like the old "Batman" TV show when they kept switching the Catwoman actress. It left me baffled and confused. This completely destroyed the continuity, and the show loss all credibility, as far as I'm concerned.
And, seriously, who else can play the "sassy black guy sidekick" that Howard perfected? C'mon. It's a breakout character, for Christ's sake. We've never seen it before.

This is like when that guy who played Tank in the first Matrix film got all uppity about his contract, so they just gave him the finger and wrote him out of it. Remember this, all lesser known actors playing supporting roles: You are thoroughly dispensable.
Plus those guys all look the same to me....those men in military uniforms, I mean.

What they did in Dark Knight was not replace some lead Star. That character was weak as hell played by ole whats her name.

yeah. she was a love interest. you can replace a love interest. but this guy is gonna be a "cape." start switching up guys like that and you wind up with batman and robin.

Shouldn't Terrence Howard be doing another Black Awareness movie instead of Iron Man. How about a movie about how the Black man was held back in WWII, or how the Black Man was held back in the music industry, or how the Black man was held back in VietNam, or how the Black man was held back during the Civil War, or how the Black man was held back on the police department, or how, wait, he already made all those movies, Okay, he can be in Iron Man II.....

Howard was BEYOND boring in the first movie. If you can upgrade to Don Cheadle, I say do it. That's why it worked for The Dark Knight. They replaced a bad actress with a good one. If it happens all the time, that's annoying, but I really did feel that Howard was the weak link in the movie. Just a bit bland compared to everything else.
