Oct 31 2008Joaquin Phoenix Has Quit Acting???

I've been avoiding covering this because I never believe it when actors say they're retiring from films (or say that they're "down to earth"), but since a few people have sent this news in, here it is: Joaquin Phoenix says he's retiring from films. From Extra with Mario Lopez:

Last night at the Paul Newman benefit, the Oscar nominee told "Extra," "I want to take this opportunity... also to give you the exclusive and just talk a little bit about the fact that this will be my last performance as an actor... I'm not doing films anymore."

"Extra's" Jerry Penacoli, shocked by the news, further probed Joaquin. "Are you serious?" Phoenix, who was curiously being followed by his own camera crews, reiterated, "Yeah. I'm working on my music. I'm done. I've been through that."

I can't blame him. This is a natural, if belated, response after being in The Village, but come on, quitting for his music career? This guy thinks he's a regular Dogstar!

Haha, he's just like Jet Li...who was also a liar.

Now we will never get the sequel to Space Camp. Nooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

well I like the cd him and reese witherspoon made for walk the line, but that's to bad he's a good actor. And jet li only said he quit making marshal arts epics, not that he quit acting all together

Good for him.

Oh please, he'll be back in Monster In Law 2

@ Koala
Jet Li is no liar, he said he was done make chinese martial arts flicks. He's worked with chinese directors since then but all the movies were by american studios. SO technically

What? I don't believe it. For someone who could play such intense characters in Gladiator and Quills, Walk the Line . . . Oh, and who was in Ladder 49, The Village, We Own the Night, Brother Bear . . .

that's a terrible pic of him
but good he's trying something else, I hope he does good =)

that totally sucks. i just watched Reservation Road and he was magnificent. i wonder what his real motivation was. i met him once and he seemed incredibly nice but a little strange and obviously not a fan of the limelight. it's ridiculous when he's finally started to get the praise he deserves and seemed pretty much poised to get an Oscar any day now. i hope he changes his mind, i'm really upset about it and enjoy his work tremendously

I will miss his sexuality that exudes in every role, his depth, his beauty, his unique demeanor. JP is truly a diamond in rough. Please someone intervene and help JP in any addictions he may have if this true. I read his bio: he never wanted to pigeon-holed in any aspect of his acting. L, P and H. God Bless You!
