Sep 10 2008Overpriced Painted Vinyl: The Movie

kid-robot-dunnies-nick.jpg

You know those little vinyl figures that look like rabbits or whatever but with different things painted on them? Those are movies now:

Paramount Pictures has made a deal with Wildbrain to turn its Kidrobot branded collectible character creations into a series of feature films that will be a mix of animation and live action.

[Scott] Aversano saw a complete collection of the characters and got the film idea while he was running Nickelodeon, and will spearhead the project as producer. The creatures come with no linear storyline, so the plan is to draft a writer for pen a story about ordinary kids who are transported into the edgy world populated by the Kidrobot creatures.

To accurately recreate the experience of the figurines, the films will come randomly packaged, cost an absurd amount, a come with a bonus disc of pre-recorded derision from your friends for paying so much for a G.D. piece of rabbit-shaped plastic.

creepy
LOOSERS you aren't first! muahaha

am i the only person who has no idea what these things are?

They are designer toys. Mostly vinyl figures. Those in the pics are Dunnys. Basically they start out as a white or black or any solid color of vinyl and different artists (mostly low brow artists) design what the thing looks like. You can get them in the solid color also most of the time. Big names in this field are Kidrobot, Frank Kozik, BountyxHunter. Secret Base, Balzac, Medicom, qee, and there are shit loads more. They really started out in japan. But there are big names in Europe, China, America, and just about every other place as well. A good film about it is Toy Punks, and a good book about it is I am Plastic. Its basically just a form of low brow art that isnt really for everyone. Nor is low brow or street art. But I myself am a big fan of them. They dont just do the designer toys though, they do clothing and luggage and most things in between. While they can be a bit... pricey sometimes. (i spent around 900 in the miami kid robot store only a few months ago) They don't loose their value and gain a lot of interest. Because most every one of them is limited edition after its produced most times it will never be done again, by that same artist or sometimes even the physical vinyl shape. But as a rule blind boxed toys (meaning there is a certain % of a certain toy in these boxes but you cant tell till you buy and open what it is, and the less the % of the one you get is. The more expensive it is, I have payed 3 bucks for one and gotten one that is worth 100. Its a gamble I guess if you really think about it but if you like them and are not really planning on selling them anyway, then it doesnt matter too much, unless your really wanting a rare one. When i spent 900 in the kid robot store I spent a lot on blindboxes but probably made over half of what I spent back on the blind boxes alone.

Now, a co. that has really rare and expensive toys is a co. called KAWS. I have NEVER seen a cheep KAWS toy. They are made in really limited quantities and even the small ones cost a shit load. That would be why I myself don't have anything KAWS related... just too damn expensive and I don't really have the money to spend 1000 (the usual minimum as far as ive seen) on one toy when I can get 50 or so for 900 and make half of it back. But anyway, I hope ive helped anyone who may have said... what the fuck is this and why is it on here.

Word! Congrats KR!!!

oooh somebody's pissed off today

These ain't no "Ugly Dolls". These are "what the fuck are those kids trippin on?" dolls. Holy crap!

Babo, Wedge Head, Ice Bat, Wage, Minimum Wage and Cinko all have these pieces of crap beat, hands down. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Hello......?

" a mix of live action and animation "

thats the new thing in hollywood rite? the magic line that will definitely sell your treatment to the studio heads.

fuck that.

I stared at them for less than a minute and was almost hypnotized. Kinda like those freaky tellatubes or whatever they are called. Gives me the willies but I can't look away.

Captain Morgan-

The creator of ugly dolls also has had his own duny series. So they are in the same scene as one another. Altough, uglydolls has gotten very popular they are indeed the same sorta thing.

I'm trying to imagine how those things could be any stupider, but it's just not coming to me.

You can see some really cool pictures of these types of toys at the site http://www.andrewlippman.tv/photos/img01.html
