Sep 30 2008Everyone is Lovin' IMAX
Good news! My Imax logo tattoo is going to remain relevant for at least a couple more summers! After Christopher Nolan found success shooting key sequence of The Dark Knight in Imax, other directors are planning to follow suit. Michael Bay has said at least three Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen scenes are being shot on the larger format, and Jon Favreau and DJ Caruso have expressed interest in using it on Iron Man 2 and Y: The Last Man, respectively. Everything will be huge!
If only this Imax revolution thing would have happened just a little sooner. Could you imagine seeing the white hot romance of Nights in Rodanthe bursting off that massive screen and scorching our seats (and hearts)? It would be like staring into a beautiful Hell as you watched the flames of passion burning in the depths of every one of Richard Gere's valleys of squint. Oh, to dream.

Only IMAX on the ceiling is awesome. Some posers try to sell you that they are IMAX when they just have up a larger than average screen (Yes, YOU, San Antonio you big ass faker) - one must be lying back and looking at a screen on the ceiling that is bigger than a Montana sky to qualify as an IMAX experience.

Y: the Last Man in IMAX sounds pretty cool, until you realize that there really isn't all that much big-scale action going on and that it'll star Shia Fucking LaBeef.
On a regular screen I could just block out his face with my hand, but on IMAX I'd have to use both, thus disabling my popcorn-eating potential.
That, and the surround sound will make me feel like I'm RIGHT THERE WITH HIM, and then I'll have to kill myself.
Sounds like great night out?

i saw dark knight on the imax and it honestly changed my life. i do have dreams about batman (they are hetero) and this was the closest thing to them.
until one of the dudes who i saw it with said after the movie that every time he gets choked up at the end because it's like batman is like christ: we is whatever we need him to be.
at that point i realized in january when they re-release it in imax i will have to go alone. i look forward to iron man 2 and will need to go this alone as well.

It's too bad that just as feature filmmakers are discovering the virtues of shooting in actual IMAX format IMAX corporation itself is pulling a scam where they put in a pair of very ordinary digital cinema projectors and make some slight modifications to a multiplex theatre and slap on the IMAX label. Anyone seeing a film like Transformers 2 will see no difference in the IMAX segments. Fortunately Dark Knight came out before this scam started. IMAX is deliberately dumbing down the very things that were key to its success all in the name of scamming people out of the extra four or five dollars. I suggest people boycott the "fake" IMAX theatres and patronize only the "real" ones. Here is a map--just avoid the ones labeled digital (and be aware that some of the multiplex theatres with genuine IMAX film projection may be converted to fake faster than the map is updated).
