Sep 30 2008Dunst is "In" for More 'Spider-Man' in a Completely Unofficial Capacity

For nearly a month, Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire have had their arms stretched to a center point, their hands overlapping, their eyes expectedly affixed on co-star Kirsten Dunst. Would she pile her hand into the center, say "I'm in" for a couple more Spider-Man movies, then do that thing where everyone in the hand-pile throws their hands up and cheers? She totally did, dudes! From MTV:

“I’m in,” said [Dunst] matter of factly.

Yessss! The old gang is back! Except that she quickly backtracked:

However, when pressed to make the announcement official, Dunst quickly changed her tone, and rather cryptically added, “I’m not saying anything, I know there’s rumors…”

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if they pulled a Katie Holmes-to-Maggie Gyllenhaal-style switch and replaced Dunst with someone else. While I'm not necessarily that opposed to her, she's clearly the most useless, easily-replaceable member of the cast, and someone else could be filling the role just as well if not better. If Spider-Man were a car, and you took it in one morning to get your Kirsten Dunst replaced, the mechanic would have it done by your lunch break. "Yeah, you were right about that noise: it was your Dunst. So I yanked 'er out, threw a Michelle Williams in there. Should be fine."

Why is Dunst a star? She's fugly.

Personally I've never been a fan of the casting of Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in the Spider-man movies. They do an ok job but Spidey could be done a ton better.

Seems like either stars deny every single news item about them to get more publicity out of a single story, are pathological liars, or all of the above.

I swear, it seems like every story that comes out ends up being denied within a day, only to be revealed as true all along a short time later.

I'm going to start doing this in my personal life and see how it works out...

I like her, she's weird as hell, but she's funny to watch

yo the whole car fixing analogy was genius. that right there is why i visit this site.

Why any speculation? In Spider-Man 3, they introduced Ron Howard's daughter as Gwen Stacy, so it stands to reason that Spider-Man 4 will really be all about Peter Parker getting in on with her, just as he did in the comics, with Mary Jane in the background (i.e. Dunst only in a couple of scenes, just like Margot Kidder in Superman 3 and 4.) then - SPOILER! - Gwen Stacy will die, just like she did in the most famous of the Spider-Man comics, and then Peter Parker will marry Mary Jane Watson at the end, and there you have the plot for SM4. Plus a villain, probably The Lizard, since Dylan Baker's already been playing the role for 2 movies. You're welcome.

i agree w/ mtk. i dont know why this is an issue. gwen is where it's at. PLUS, kirsten should jump at ANY role they have to offer her.

Whenever it comes to comic book films like Spiderman or Batman, it's always rampant fan speculation. "Carnage will be in the next Spiderman film!," or "Johnny Depp will be the Riddler!" No one knows jack all.

First of all, I don't believe they thought they'd be doing a 4th film. Even if they did, they seemed to wrap up the whole Gwen Stacy thing with her rejecting Peter Parker. It was quick, it was stupid, and it had nothing to do with the plot. Just like Venom, who also won't be coming back.

Personally, I think the 4th film will be incredibly horrible. They fell to the third movie curse, and never in film history has a 4th movie been decent. I'm not even going to get started on the 5th film's potential.

like in the tradition of comic books changing creatively during a comic book run, i can see anyone in the cast really changing without anyone really being terribly pissed.

while i think that tobey maguire does the job, im not hearing anyone calling tobey maguire THE peter parker. so whatever.

as far as kirsten dunst goes, its all been down hill since that upside down kiss. her teen cuteness thing never materialized into anything beyond that...and she looked drugged in every movie. so no eye candy or acting chops? bleh.

the spider-man movies should really be treated like James bond movies.

Ditch that fugly vampire, especially if she's too stupid to take the job when clearly her career isn't going anywhere. She and Maggie Gyllenhaal can have a "who's uglier" contest in order to decide which one should never have been in a popular action/superhero movie (hint: neither one of them).

MTK,

They've really hosed the whole Spider relationship thing from the beginning. In the comics he meets MJ first but only hangs out with her once before he starts to date Gwen Stacy seriously. The fact that they waited till the 3rd move to introduce Gwen Stacy means they are capable of messing the story up any way they like. I'd hope they do the right thing by having MJ get together with Peter but other than that who knows.

I think That Mary Jane should be played by a real redhead . You know form all the comics MJ is supposed to be hot which Kirsten is not. So Let's See nicky Cox Purr "go get them tiger." I bet Sam Raimi would be cool with it.
