Aug 12 2008'The Spirit' is Looking Really, Really Bad
Though I've still never picked it up, I always hear how Will Eisner's The Spirit is a groundbreaking, must-read comic series for anyone at all interested in the medium. That information directly contradicts what I'm seeing in this fight scene that was shown at Comic Con, which paints The Spirit as a slapstick comedy with more getting-hit-with-objects-for-comedic-reactions than Home Alone. Also, it takes place in a sewage nebula? Just watch it.
The trombone slide was a nice touch, but I hope they aren't done with the CGI yet. This scene could use some tweeting birds circling their heads. (via TR)

It is sort of amusing, in a very children's-cartoon-made-real sort of way (as you said) but sweet tinkerbell jesus that is not the Spirit I know.....X_X

So wait....is this film trying to be absolutely retarded on purpose? I guess they are really going all out to prove that this is not Sin City. Nice work Frank, I see no similarities.
Additionally can someone please shoot Frank Miller in the goddamned face before he ruins his legacy any further. Thanx!

Never before have I been so happy the Wil Eisner is dead.
7. Frank - August 12, 2008 2:23 PM
Horrible. Shit in more ways than one.
The shot with Jackson looking over The Spirit's shoulder is something you would expect Leslie Nielsen to do.

enough is enough, I have had it with this mother!@#king spirit in this mother!@#king sewer.

I know nothing about the Spirit, but it looks too me as if it's just been Frank Miller-ized. It looks like it'll be a fun movie. Probably not a good movie, though.

of course this was made on purpose for the comic con nerds recording vids with their cellphones and then braging about em and leaking them on the web.

Wow. When I first heard about this movie I thought it looked kinda cool. This is going to be horrible.

!JESUS CRISTO! Is that what I'm gonna be seeing in theaters this christmas? Slapstick acting fighting...it worked for the 3way fight in "Pineapple Express" but that just looked f*ckin stupid. A toilet!!!! A mother F*ckin TOILET!!!

Wait, Frank Miller of "All-Star Batman and Robin" is making a bad movie?
I can't believe it.
14. Rob - August 12, 2008 3:38 PM
Huh...That's insane in the worst way possible.
15. Alec - August 12, 2008 4:15 PM
What were those people cheering and applauding at?
16. spyro - August 12, 2008 4:41 PM
@ 6 - I think Will Eisner would be glad he was dead if he could see that. Looks horrific.
17. fdsfdsfr4d - August 12, 2008 4:44 PM
u think anyone is gonna protest at the premier simply because the whole fuckin movie is RETARDED?
18. tom - August 12, 2008 5:18 PM
Nothing in this clip surprises me. Miller's 'take' on this is as uninspired and alarmingly shitty as everything else he's attempted in this decade. Take the gas pipe, Frank.

Frank Miller is a hack, period. The success he had with TDK was it, I draw the line there. The writing in Sin City was atrocious, Ronin was a giant turd, Robocop isn't even worth getting into and he's proven his worth (or therefor lack of) with All Star Batman and Robin.
His "legacy" is nothing but over-hyped fanboy wet dreams. Still, I second the "shoot him in the face" vote.

What #19 said. Except with some additional comments about how brainless "300" was.

I'm a big fan of the Spirit; I can't say I'm a longtime fan (only the last 2-3 years,) but it's full of great writing, varied art, and is just very well-done all around.
Of course, there are worse ways to spend Christmas than watching a movie that may or may not ruin my enjoyment of any form of entertainment, ever; for example, I could be being waterboarded with bleach (bleachboarded?)
I'll probably see the movie, with naive hope for some redeeming qualities, but I can't say I'll be looking forward to it as much as, say, the chance to yell at small children at family gatherings this holiday season.

Hmm - try watching and thinking "Nyuk, Nyuk, Woo, Woo, Woo" and it's much more entertaining.
After the toilet, think "Wise Guy, huh?"

In the Last Total Film issue, Miller said that he thought that the way the Spirit just kept on hitting and being hit, was amazing, and definetily "some thing you've never seen before" i really wonder why. Well i don't, cause it's kinda obvious.
He also said that "300 and Sin City were just training". Training for a crap movie, that with its trailers so far, have done nothing but breaking my spirit.
And now this!
24. Cooper - August 13, 2008 6:05 AM
seriously? wtf? I was looking forward to this, from all the pre-release publicity. But this just looks beyond horrific.
25. TooDarkMark - August 13, 2008 9:54 AM
Honestly, the comic was more like this than people think. Has anyone ever read a Spirit comic book? Probabley not.
As far as this being bad, I mean I guess. This was dissapointing. I wish Bird from Pixar had been allowed to make this, because he really wanted to. Would've been huge and something to remember.
26. Kevin - August 13, 2008 11:13 AM
@19 - "Ronin was a giant turd"??? Tread lightly, boy.
27. Josh - August 13, 2008 11:25 AM
@19
His work on Daredevil is good.
Other than that, you are correct, all his other work is a fucking joke.
Had Sin City been written by someone who wasn't a grunting chimp it would have been brilliant instead of just ok.
The "writing" in 300 made the stories in Sin City look like Faulkner.
Miller really should stick to drawing cartoons. Or dying in a fire, either or.
28. tom - August 13, 2008 4:39 PM
The worst part is that Miller shows us this clip like he's proud of it. What an ay hole.
