Tarantino is a terrible actor, but my general feeling after watching it is "Why the fuck not?"

Saw this movie a few months ago - it's actually really great once you get past the "English" pronunciations (which is difficult for the first 20 mins, not gonna lie). The movie is filmed in phonetic English, and it's very obvious that the Asian actors are just speaking what sounds like gibberish to them but is barely discernible as english to us.

I really enjoyed this movie - got to see it at the NZ International Film Fest. Luckily, Tarantino isn't in it THAT much (cos by god he is awful) and the multiple characters he supposedly plays are in fact the same character (as a young 'un and as an old geezer).

TAKASHI MIIKE DIRECTED THIS?!? He's one of the few directors working any more who understands what you can actually do with characters and a camera. And you summed up the prime difference between American and Asian cinema: that Americans whine like hell unless every nuance of every sneeze is explained to them with crystal clear clarity. Someone once wrote that when friends complained when she tried to show them HK movies, she'd reply, "People fly. Just accept it." That's precisely why Asian cinema will always be prettier than American. LOTR wasn't pretty, just expensive. Nightwatch (I know it's Russian, but Wendy doesn't) is pretty AND A HELL OF A LOT MORE INTERESTING.

What's with all this worship of Japanese stuff? Much of the time it's so retarded all we can do is laugh about it. This movie looks to be one of those times. Maybe the Japanese don't mind it when things make absolutely no frikkin' sense and cannot suspend our disbelief for even a second, but I don't.

So stop trashing on Western cinema just because you don't care about a little realism. Not everyone agrees with you. Lord of the Rings WAS BEAUTIFUL. Shut up.

Bobeyo, and crap like Mummy 3 and Transformers aren't absolutely retarded? Riiiiiight! What I love about foreign movies is that it's an entirely different type of movie not affected by the Hollywood Money Machine and sometimes actually requires you to think because they don't beat you over the head with excessive exposition.

Now I do agree with how senseless some of the western culture bashing is. Some people do it to look cool and hip(Karl Marl is a good example). I like to acknowledge all cultures and see the strength in them.

BUT LOTR is NOT pretty. It's a lifeless, over-CGI'ed borefest that's too perfect and tidy. And fix that Matrix mistake - the movie has NOTHING to do with aliens. That's the whole point that the COMPUTERS took over the world. Wow.

The reason Tarantino is in this movie so much is because he is a fucking narcissist. He needs to stick to what he does best which is writing and directing.

But I do promise in the future to write my opinion only if I know everyone agrees with me. I loved that part in LOTR when they built a $4M set and put all the characters in the center of the frame and didn't bother moving the camera, 'cause everyone knows that'd be gay.

I saw this a while back, and Tarantino parts aside, it was a pretty sweet movie. Really wish he wasn't in it. At all. But oh well.

The trailer describes this film as: "Miike's English-language masterpiece..." Yet it didn't make it to American theaters, it's already on dvd, and it appears that many of the commenters (as well as myself) have never heard of it. How good could it be? I'm sure I'll rent it anyway, I can't help myself...it looks cool. BTW: Wikipedia had some interesting reviews of this film, give 'em a read.

The fact that anyone ever let Tarantino act in a project that didn't belong to him is stunning. Just stunning.

That said, he is always better on other people's movies. Probably because other people are more apt to cast him as a foot-sucking pervert, the role he was born to play.
