Aug 6 2008Help Me Decide if This 'Role Models' Trailer is Good or Not
OK, a high concept comedy where a couple semi-detestable guys reform themselves when they're forced to volunteer at a Big Brothers program should be awful, right? That's what I thought too, but here's the rub: it's written by, directed by, and starring various The State/Wet Hot American Summer guys, so it should be pretty decent, right? But it also stars Stiffler, who I'm at best ambivalent towards, and has a joke about how crazy the cup size names are at Starbucks. But then again, the Reindeer Games joke is pretty good, as is Paul Rudd. But man, this overly-precocious kid is going to get old real quick (both in the movie and real life, when he'll probably turn to drugs). So I don't know what to think. Anyone?

The State guys also did The Ten.
The Ten is one of three movies I have out of at a theater. AWFUL.

I meant "walked out of at a theater"... maybe my opinion isn't to be trusted.

ya know, it actually doesn't look bad to my surprise
4. Andrew - August 6, 2008 3:22 PM
hmmm might be half decent. I didn't mind the 10, but it was more a bunch of shorts than a movie.

Paul Rudd is so unbelievably hot.
YUMMMMMMMMM
6. weston deboer - August 6, 2008 3:29 PM
Paul Rudd is hot, no homo.
I think it would have been a better movie if they actually did go to jail

How about you watch it and THEN decide if it's any good, instead of deciding beforehand that it's going to suck based on a bunch of vague suppositions.

Looks like I wouldn't regret renting it and I don't know if I'd regret going out to see it.

looks half way decent. I actually ended up turning off The 10. it was lame. Poor Chris. Looks like he won't escape the McLovin thing after all. Oh well, at least he's got work
12. bonnie - August 6, 2008 5:35 PM
looks boring.
13. Lisa - August 6, 2008 5:40 PM
This one didn't make me laugh too much, except for a few of the black kid's lines, but I'll probably see it for Paul Rudd.
Also, stuff it, Caesar

It's just the wrong kind of bad.
The kind of bad where you knew the movie was bad but you hoped that maybe there would be a few good moments so you go to see it knowing deep down that you know its going to be Bewitched level bad.
So it really hurts when you walk out of the theater smelling of stale butter flavoring and you don't even have the excuse that your lady friend made you see this one .

Bobby J is so full of win.

Well, first of all, I think all movies are worth watching. Even the bad ones. It's why we watch movies, right? For the sake of watching them. It's what cinephiles do.
I think the movie can go either way. But you know, the cast has impeccable comedic timing, and anything Elizabeth Banks touches is gold. Plus, how can you beat a line like "You're white, then you Ben Affleck." And McLovin' geeked out in a cape with an army? A-mazing.
The only thing, really, that's working against it is that it has a plot. Ridiculous comedies tend not to do well if there's a point. What was the point of Knocked Up? Or any of the Apatow comedies? They're just a good time filled with ridiculously funny scenes. So having a plot, building to a conclusion, developing character arcs might actually work against it.

# 17 Good outlook on films.
Of course this film is gonna be good. Paul Rudd is like Midas. Anything he touches is gold.

The Ten was hilarious! One of the funniest movies of the year!
When I saw it at the theater I was the only one who laughed-out-loud, it was weird sitting in a crowd and being the only one laughing...
A bunch of people did walk out when I saw it, which I heard was a common thing during it's theatrical run.

I love how angry broomstick girl was all about not demeaning women and then can't avoid tripping over her tongue when it comes to Paul Rudd. You are a joke. A sad one.

I like it. :)

For the record - I thought The 10 was just ok... this looks like it could be ok. I like the goofing on LARPers angle...
BTW, I made a movie that goofs on LARPers (live action role playing) way before these guys did. It looks like Chris is playing a major LARPer in this movie. Anyway, see what you think. http://www.wisdumb.com/blog/?p=8

I thought the trailer was pretty funny. And like Brandon says, Paul Rudd does have that Midas touch. He's plays loveable assholes oh so well.
26. battlecat - August 7, 2008 4:27 PM
i thought the ten was pretty awesome, but i hate stifler with a passion and if i have to sit thru one more buddy comedy then, i am going to light myself on fire and jump my roof. if we are betting on paul rudd to save a movie, then we are fucked my friends.

I really didn't hate The Ten but judging from the imdb no one's opinion is really viable on that one. Everyone either liked it or thought it was the worst movie they've ever seen. Kindof a strange occurrence if you ask me.
And regarding Role Models, I'm excited for it. The cast has a potential for some really interesting chemistry and if I had to get some kind of a drunken tattoo I would definitely choose to immortalize Paul Rudd's beauty and genius on my lower back. So that's where I stand.
Also bravo to you, Keyser Soze. Very well put. And cool choice of name :)

It's looks like it's going to be one of those movies that has a few good laughs here and there, and then tries to tie everything together into a feel-good movie with a sappy ending. If you don't mind the diabetes, it probably won't be horrible.
