Aug 12 2008'Coraline' Featurette Further Appeases My Nerdiness
Any movie directed by stop-motion animation master Henry Selick, based on a story by Neil Gaiman story, and with music by They Might Be Giants is going to really appeal to a certain type of geek. Namely, the type who used to read Sandman, listen to Flood on a regular basis, and watch The Nightmare Before Christmas at least every Halloween. I already knew Coraline had all of these things going for it, but man, no one told me John Hodgman was doing a voice in this thing, too. It's like angsty 9th-grade me's tastes shaking hands with current, listening-to-The Areas of My Expertise-audiobook-on-the-train me. They probably shouldn't literally shake hands, because I know what 9th grade me was doing with his hand nearly to the point of it becoming a problem, but you get the idea.
Coraline featurette under the cut.
You totally knew Hodgman would be a big Gaiman/Selick fan.

Don't know if I'll see the movie but I'll gladly pull out my copy of Flood again. Great album.

Wow. Despite the mediocrity of the Corpse Bride, everything Selick touches is fun, so color me there.

Corpse Bride wasn't done by Selick, that was Burton all the way. Animation done by an outfit next to the studio where he filmed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Burton did Corpse Bride with Charlie because he could only work 3-5 hours a day on Charlie due to child labor laws.

Sweet. Now if Terry Gilliam would just get off his ass for Good Omens.

Jebus, what a combination. Now this is an adaptation I can look forward to.

I read the book a couple times and enjoyed it.
While I'm all for this *type* of animation, the style does nothing for me. It's too cartoon-y and cutesy for a story that is neither; when I first heard about the movie, I thought they would do it more in the style of, say, the book's cover art, which is much grungier and darker. The bright blues and purples (and yes, the They Might Be Giants soundtrack) just don't fit the tone of the story at all.
That being said, it could still be a good movie; just a terrible adaptation of the book.

I have to agree with the above comment. I read this to a group of fifth graders a while back and we were all in agreement about how deliciously freaky this story is. It is definitely not a cute story. It's rather creepy at times. That being said, I am so freakin' going to see this flick.

What they should have made is a stop motion Sandman movie. With Death and Delerium. Oh well.

@4 But really, who is suited to play "Ansaphones"?

I feel the style works fine. The dichotomy it creates is a good one. I think there's something still marginally creepy about anyone with buttons for eyes... but beyond that, we've seen almost nothing of it in this trailer.
It's Gaiman's creation and any decision he helps make in this film is obviously what he feels the adaptation should be like.
