Jul 31 2008Sony Figures They Might as Well Make a Venom Movie

If one looks at superhero comic movies as a trend, like pogs, we're getting to the point where 7-11 Slurpee cups come with pogs attached; and there's a small kiosk near your mall's Sunglass Hut devoted entirely to pogs and pog storage; and every time you go to school, kids are asking if you have any new pogs, or want to trade pogs, but probably still don't care that much about playing pogs; and you're looking at your room, strewn with thin, strangely expensive cardboard discs, and you're like, don't get me wrong, I love pogs (for at least a couple more weeks), but fuck, why are there so many pogs?

Case in point: Sony has announced they'll be making a Spider-Man spinoff focusing on Venom. From Hollywood Reporter:

The studio had commissioned a draft of the [Venom] script from Jacob Estes, a writer of the specialty film "Mean Creek," released several years ago by Paramount Classics.

But the studio is considering going in a different direction from Estes' script and is seeking writers for a new draft.

Casting also is no simple matter. Topher Grace played the character in the film, but agents have been eyeing the role for their clients, as Sony is not yet convinced the actor can carry a tentpole picture.

Ignoring that it will almost surely be terrible in its execution, it's not even that bad of an idea, really. It's just that in a few years we're going to have to explain to the next generation why we have so many of these discs that we never touch, and I'm not sure I have the answers.

How do you do Venom without Spider-Man?

Anyone have an Alf pog?

@1 Venom has had his own comic series (eg. Venom: Lethal Protector)

I dont think anyone could have fit the word pog more times into that first paragraph. I had this f'n sweet yin Yang pog that was my fave. then some douchebag tried to steal it and I threw my slammer at his head. log story short I got my ass suspended for two weeks.

easy you go off of the leathal protector comics that are based off venom as a neurtal superhero who live in san fransico.

I thought 'specialty film' meant, like WWE Clash of the Titans or videos on vacation locations like 'Kissimee St. Cloud'. Mean Creek was just a dramatic indie film.

Another thing, 'tentpole picture'?

@4 he wasn't neutral, he was a good guy but only due to the circumstance. it wasnt the first or last time that he good.

That seems too obscure for a feature film. At least I know what pogs are, though I never understood the appeal.

i only own like 10% of my pogs. sadly i do or did have a bunch of Alf pog.

@3

Was it in the shape of a saw and metal? If so, those were bad ass. I would have killed someone's family if they stole mine from me.

Did anyone ever really play pogs?

Just one thing ... didn't Venom, uh i don't know ... DIE at the end of spider-man 3?

...what about Carnage? I want this fucker rated R.

I'm pretty sure dr venkman was quoting millhouse in the simpsons not seriously asking if anyone had alf pogs.

Fuck that. I don't care if they supposedly killed him off in Spider-Man 3, they should just retcon it or not even mention it.

Unlike most people I kind of (sort of) like Spider-Man 3, but killing Venom without him having but ten minutes of screen time pissed me off. I'm excited about the prospect of a Venom film, and here's hoping it's done right.

Honestly, I wonder how many people considered Tobey Maguire a household name before Spider-Man anyway. I have to guess not many.

Topher Grace could handle it if they came up with an actually good movie... which I'm personally doubting.
