Jul 30 2008'Princess and the Frog' Trailer Should at Least Sell a Few Dolls

princess-and-frog-teaser.jpg

Watching this trailer, in which a frog insists on more and more intense sexual advances from the non-existant royalty of New Orleans, I was pleasantly surprised that the ridiculous Randy Newman parody of Randy Newman music managed to distract me somewhat from the animated ennui that is this minute-long preview. I was really hoping to give more of an endorsement, seeing that this is probably Disney's last gamble on 2D animation and pretending they don't hate black people, but that's the best I can do.

Looks interesting.

I'm looking forward to a new hand drawn kids flick...lets hope it's better then that god awful Barn Yard or whatever the fuck it was called.

LMAO!!! Brings back memories. Then there was the bag and a lot of cheep booze and I kinda forget everything after that. Great stuff!

Randy Newman has long been a parody of himself. This video is pretty much how I imagine him to actually be.

I love the firefly.

I think it looks cute, but like Disney is trying too hard to pretend that Song of the South never happened.

MICKEY MOUSE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE

Now that I got that out of the way, I'm pretty certain the Randy Newman parody is Dr. John. What really made me slap my forehead was the Sebastian-the-Crab Creole-tarded firefly (why, Jim Cummings?)

Again, file under 'Morbid Curiosity'. I'll see it because I love traditional animation, and I'm hoping that Disney has spent all this time learning from the mistakes of Pocahontas.

I'm happy to see two things in this; 1: it is hand drawn, and 2: the princess in black. very nice to see.

Hmm...there's really not enough there to judge anything. She is a pretty little Disney-calibur princess, but why is she holding the frog out over the balcony like she'll drop him at any time :p

I think it's embarrassing that Disney has NEVER created a Black princess til now.

This is 2008.

haha I don't know why but the fact that the firefly is toothless is just hilarious to me...

I think it's embarassing that Disney has to turn every female character (human and non-human) into a "princess." Even the non-princesses get marketed as such.

All of this, "It's about time they made a black princess" raises my brow a bit. I mean, they had an Arab hero some years ago and I don't remember hearing anyone say, "Well, it's about time." They did an Asian girl a while ago as well if my memory serves me - again, no Asians sighing relief, "We're FINALLY free!"

I know I don't give two shits about what colour Disney's next princess is, but if I found myself concerned about it, the next thing I'd do is ask myself why.

Randy Newman IS doing the music. That's no parody. The firefly is far too Don Bluth and totally ruined this trailer. Classic 90s Disney though. *crosses fingers*

Doctor John would make sense because of the New Orleans thing. Good call, #6.

Looks cute but randomly trying too hard to be politically correct. Fairy tales should represent all ethnicities. But of course we know why Disney is so reluctant to produce a new ethnic princess- they are a bunch of Nazis. Because of obvious favor of the whities, they are perhaps satisfying a demand and why not? Little black girls deserve to have a princess and a new story to look up to. And who says girls of other colors can't enjoy?

STILL...It is just so obvious that Disney makes an attempt to include every 'minority' they can but to be honest, no matter the skin of the princess, little girls will love it. And that is what matters.

Unless they are hate-filled, racist biatches.

LOL
Disney makes their first black princess the "princess" of New Orleans...
HA too funny...
All Hail Princess "show us your boobs"!

What if she turns white when she kisses the frog? That'd blow some people's minds.

@ #12 Uncle Eccoli

The problem with that though is that Mulan (asian), Jasmine(arab), and Pocahontas(native american) are not actually considered 'princesses' in the Disney canon, they're only sometimes tagged along in promotion. This one is an actual princess.

Finally a black Disney Princess and the way they introduce her is in a preview with a frog and a Podunk backwater voiced firefly. Hilarious.

#17

jasmine is "princess jasmine," daughter of the sultan

COOL,! A friend of mine recommended me a HOT place ***"NYwealthyMatch .c o m *** It’s a place full of hot stuff and also a place where the rich & celebrity have romance!

"I think it's embarassing that Disney has to turn every female character (human and non-human) into a "princess." Even the non-princesses get marketed as such."

Agreed. Maybe that's why I like Mulan so much.

WTFFFFF??????? this= THIS is in the #1 for "so freaking cool" and Harry Potter is second???

But my God- the fire fly is soooo cute... can't.... stay... pissed....

Randy Newman (whose family is from New Orleans) is doing the music, but plenty of local musicians are contributing their talents and voices-- including The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Dr. John, whose voice that indeed is in the trailer. Newman mentioned Dr. John would be singing that song for the movie when he previewed it at JazzFest this year. I can't wait to hear the soundtrack; I'm sure I'm going to love the music, based on what I've heard so far.

Gee, they sure went out of their way to make the first black Disney princess as black as possible didn't they? I wonder if the evil twats at Disney are being a little cautious.

I'm so tired of the "irony" and self mockery in these animation films since shreck, this is so easy now, and I bet this movie will contain loads of "funny" references !

Disney should do what they have been doing for years with talent and let this shitty humor to the knock-off dreamworks movies.

( excuse my english, Im french)

Isn't it strange that Disney finally makes a black princess and it's a 2d animated film? Like Disney is just setting the film up for failure.

As a person from Louisiana I find it a tad offensive that that firefly is a toothless moron. So there is a black characterin a non-stereotypical role as a princess...great...now lets stereotype the cajun (or just Southern) people as stupid hillibillies. Song Of The South part II?...but it is okay because its funny to portray white Southerners as one-dimensional inbred idiots. 2-D...more like 1-D. Blah

HOLY CRAP how racist is that? I read a long time ago about this movie, and the plot made me laugh out loud, it's ridiculously awful. This is their first African American princess, and she has a freaking firefly who sounds and sounds like a toothless homeless man in New Orleans? WHAT?

Sucks.

@ 19. moofyboof

*gonk* your right, my apologies

@ 27 and 28

I was just going to say that. The trailer was actually tolerable until that horrible firefly opened his mouth.

Ya know, I have a feeling that everyone is going to find something in this trailer to offend themselves. People actually want to be offended by this movie so they can bash Disney.

Personally, I've never had a problem with all the princesses in Disney films being white because most Disney films (classic, good ones at least) featuring princesses are based on European fairy tales. So keeping that in mind it makes perfect sense to me for the characters to then be of European heritage!

And by this same logic, David Lynch must be a racist, too, for none of his leading men and women are black. How far should I extend this?

@17 Are you fucking serious? Any excuse to complain about perceived racism will fly, won't it? Wouldn't it be better if everybody just made movies the way they wanted, without second-guessing every single creative decision to pander to the double-standard-bearing crusaders of some minority or another AND have everybody simultaneously stop scrutinising every little thing for some way to be offended by it?
I've got to tell you, I used to be one of those crusaders. I have finally realised in recent years, however, that it's all a bunch of self-righteous masturbation - "Look how enlightened I am, look how democratic and culturally sensitive, look how ... *full of shit.* People are different the world over. That's the way it is. To say it's good or bad is a value judgment and only speaks to the judge, not the judged. But when people begin to alternately celebrate or deliberately gloss over those differences depending on the particular arena in which they find themselves at the moment, you know the situation is being disingenously manipulated.

@31 Yes. Keep it going.

HELOOOOO STEROTYPES!!!!!!!!

Is that a Levee breaking in the background I see?

@ # 22 - I agree, WTF - according to the site, this trailer is so much freaking cooler than the watchmen trailer..

# 27 + 28 - I guess the shoulda just shown the lightning bug float by, extinguished..

@31.

I agree completely. If Disney wants to have European people in their European fairytales, who are we to judge? They have used other ethnicities where the story demanded it--it was actually sort of nice that they never "forced" any randomly ethnic people (ever seen "Black Snow White?" be glad you haven't.)

If they want to have a black princess? Fine. Why get angry about it?

Although that firefly is so ugly it is making my brain melt...

oh my god!!
so fucking LAME!!!!!!

It makes me sick that when Disney finally caved to the wishes of black racists to dodge historical realism and make a "black princess," they still cried "racist!" about her name (Maddy) and occupation (chamber maid), thus proving they wanted no realism whatsoever - despite how disrespectful they were being to people who actually HAD that name and type of occupation. All they wanted was shameless ass-kissing.

And that's what they're going to get. But they're still going to complain about it all the way to and from the box office.

Not that many people will get that far anyway. I certainly won't.

That said, at least they're hiring actual voice actors for some of the characters instead of nothing but celebrities. Good to see. Too bad Goliath is the badguy.

I bet this movie performs badly at the box office. It isn't appealing to main stream americans. I.E white people who make up over 70% of the population. They won't watch it for the same reason you don't see white girls walking around with black dolls. It's not a character they'll identify with.

@31, the reason there are no black people is David Lynch movies is because they have way too much sense to be in them. Let those silly white people molest and kill their children, or be pyscho lesbian lovers with personality disorders.

Black Films suck already, there's no need to get David Lynch in the mix. BLECH!!!!

they should make a 2d animated movie of aida (elton john+tim rice) instead!

Interesting,I like it. There is also an interesting
place***blackwhiteconnect.com***worth to play

@41: love your reasoning there and I completely agree. David Lynch's films truly are about stupid white suburban and/or small town people and the problems they create for themselves. Although, I have to disagree about black cinema: blaxploitation is some fucking fine exploitation work.

I fucking Lul'ed at the firefly's voice..and I had to watch it again. It is so fucking stupid and out there, it might actually attract a cult following.

Wow. So Disney finally makes a black princess, and she has a crazy drunk hobo firefly pet? Oh please God don't let us get stuck with nothing but pixilated crap for the rest of Disney's likely to be immortal life. All hail Princess Blaxploitation, daughter of the queen and king of the drunkards. And seriously, is that actually New Orleans? I think it might be. I bet the evil witch does voodoo.

The other main female characters were sort of princesses, too.

Pocahontas was the daughter of the chief, which is about as high up as you can get, therefore she was a princess.

Mulan was just a peasant (farmer?) girl, but she was the front and center hero of the film and kicked ass. At the end of the movie, she started a courtship with the captain of the Chinese army. Not royalty, but not bad.
She is counted as a princess. I have some "Disney Princesses: Mulan Bubble Tea Mix" in my house right now. (I know, I know, bubble tea isn't Chinese but that's for another argument)

I think the setting for The Princess and the Frog is a great idea, Walt Disney loved New Orleans. Not sure where exactly the royalty comes from, but they'll explain it.
Who cares if the fly sidekick is a white stereotype. God forbid white people be mocked. They did it in Harold and Kumar go to White Castle (with hilarious results).
I think the movie will be handled as sensitively as possible, they'll have to. But there will always be someone to pick things apart.

So really, the Latinos should be getting all butthurt because there still isn't any Central/South American princess. The Aztecs and the other civilizations in that era even had kings! Tsk tsk...

Someone will always be offended. There will be nothing left to watch at all if it appeals to everyone.

I wonder if the prince will be black lol

I for one think this looks like a fun and entertaining movie based on the short trailer we were able to see. Why do adults have to dirty up such an innocent movie? Kids aren't going to give a damn if the movies princess is purple and for crying out loud I realize many may think the firefly is a stereotype of poor southern white trash but remember fireflies don't have teeth so there is no stereotype. If fireflies did have teeth they probably would fall out since they couldn't brush them and their poor diet would not help.

Anyway, you adults that are reading so much into a kids movie should really get a life. Disney films and cartoons aren't supposed to completely represent real life. That is why I like animation. Anything is possible.
