Jul 21 2008'Dark Knight' Deemed Best Movie Ever by Internet Populace, Money
Weekend box office figures, you lucky dogs!
1. The Dark Knight - Apparently some sort of Batman thing opened this weekend, and it made $155.3 million, breaking every record for everything. Also, according to the distinctive group known as "people with the internet," it's the best movie ever made.
2. Mamma Mia! - $27.6 million, because your mom saw it.
3. Hancock - Some people refuse to believe anyone but Will Smith could be mankind's hero. These people saw Hancock, earning it $14 million.
4. Journey to the Center of the Earth - $11.9 million, because your illegitimate child saw it.
5. Hellboy II: The Golden Army - $10 million. Bad month to come out, everything that isn't Batman.

Jesus that's some money, wonder how it would have done in comparison had Ledger not died?
4. Aerialgreen - July 21, 2008 12:26 PM
Had not Ledger died I'd still be all over his role as the Joker, it was great within the restrictions of a PG-13 cut, regardless whatever happened or not to him or the other actor in it.
For this movie (and Hellboy and Ironman) I skipped every single trailer, add, commercial, interview, preview, forum, blog, etc. and the payoff was worth it.

I loved it!

Aerialgreen - love to know how you managed it. it's been DK saturation and it's made me want to leave it a bit before I see it, he looks like he did a great job, not taking anything from him, but things like this can make a movie, or make a movie that was already going to be successful into a phenomena.
7. beefytee - July 21, 2008 12:34 PM
really, better than The Godfather? I wonder if the people that rated it so highly have ever even SEEN the godfather.
Full disclosure, I have not yet seen the Dark Knight. I will though. Opening wknd in NYC is just too crazy to deal with...unless you're going to see "Gone Fishin" with Joe Pesci and Danny Glover...plenty of seats there...also Riding in cars with Boys....best part of that movie was the handy I got because there were only 3 other people there...

I agree
9. wendy - July 21, 2008 12:56 PM
As of my posting over 6 times the people have voted for Godfather than for Dark Knight, so if the number of people who voted for Godfather end up voting for Dark Knight I have a feeling Dark Knight's score will be lower.
I'm not commenting on how good of a movie either of those movies are more that when you have a larger sampling it's going to give a more accurate rating.
10. James007 - July 21, 2008 12:59 PM
um - Wall-E was #23 on the IMDB list?
Guaranteed that the Batman movie will drop a bunch of spots once non-fanatics start voting on that site.

I'm not a big fan of the godfather, i never really got into it, but even though I liked the Dark Knight more I agree it shouldn't be number one. Now if there was a rating system for best performance by an individual I would say Heath Ledger takes the cake, I was stunned. Really The Dark Knight was just the previous movie, with Ledger. Good action, much better than all of the previous awful batmans, but in the end just an alright movie, that is until Ledger as Joker and Aaron Eckhart as Dent.

Someone told me once, I haven't ever tried to verify the story but it points out a common phenomenon, that in 1974 some huge radio station did a count down of the best songs off all time leading up to new years. In the count down they had all the songs you'd expect like Beatles and Elvis and what not but the number one song was Kung Fu Fighting. The thing was when the average person heard this announcement they were happy.
Whether or not that's true I can say time gives perspective.

I had a questions:
SPOILER POSSIBLY
SPOILER
SPOILER
at the end when they are talking about the five people (two of them cops) that Dent supposedly killed that Batman is taking the hit for, who were they? I counted three....do you just assume two others were taken down?
14. David - July 21, 2008 2:21 PM
From Yahoo news:
At 2007's average price of $6.88, "Spider-Man 3" sold 21.96 million tickets over opening weekend. Media By Numbers estimates today's average movie prices at $7.08, which means "The Dark Knight" would have sold 21.94 million tickets.

I'm planning on seeing it again sometime this week. Awesome movie and Ledger as the Joker has got to be if not the best, at least top 3, best portrayals of a villain ever. I don't think I'll ever be able to watch any other Batman movie and be satisfied.
16. Oscar - July 21, 2008 4:46 PM
David, we didn't have 5 dollar gas back then. We also didn't have a recession. So The Dark Knight breaking all these records during this economy really says something.
17. Aerialgreen - July 21, 2008 6:02 PM
Also, why has nobody even mentioned that Batman and BatMANUEL (from the old The Thick live series) were in the same movie? well, Nestor Carbonell was playing the Mayor of Gotham City, but, but... c'mon! Batmanuel!
18. regular voter - July 21, 2008 7:02 PM
"The formula for calculating the Top Rated 250 Titles gives a true Bayesian estimate:
weighted rating (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C
where:
R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating)
v = number of votes for the movie = (votes)
m = minimum votes required to be listed in the Top 250 (currently 1300)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6.7)
for the Top 250, only votes from regular voters are considered."
just wanted to point out how they got the ratings and from whom
19. uni'tard - July 21, 2008 7:35 PM
finally! after months and months of avoiding this site completely for fear of reading spoilers for the dark knight, i can now return to my routine of checking every other week!
20. Pat - July 21, 2008 8:14 PM
David's point is moot - final numbers came out today, and the estimate (published here) was off by 3.1 million. The total was 158.4 million, which means more people DID see TDK than Spider-Man 3. So there.
21. emily - July 21, 2008 8:54 PM
This was one movie that gets people super excited, so people came home, logged on to write "THIS MOVIE WAS TEH SHYTE!!" on the IMDB message boards, and rate it 10. It always happens with new movies - the rating is always very high right after it comes out. WALL-E is ranked number 24, five above Citizen Kane. ...Uh.
22. Joey - July 21, 2008 11:54 PM
Ledger was AMAZING! Holy crap, why did he have to die? He absolutely MADE this movie. What a waste.
23. Mikey - July 22, 2008 8:15 AM
Saw it the day it came out in Australia, and my god the bets movie I've seen all year, and quiet some time. It deserves to be crowned as the greatest film of all time.
Heath Ledger steals the movie, shame he passed away. There were a few funny scenes in the movie, too, which made me crack up.

How can you not agree with the #1 ranking? Seeing WALL-E at #23 confirms that this survey is 100% legit.
25. Hotpants - July 22, 2008 11:26 AM
You have to consider what "good" means. The Dark Knight was definitely entertaining and it offered more than 2 hours of solid escapism. If that's what you define as "great" then... great. But the film is a bit preachy and some of it is just flat out melodramatic SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER -- like when the Batman copycat asks him "what's the difference between you and us?"
If you're definition of a great film depends more on the cinematography, the direction, the symbolism, the message, and/or the dialog, then there are better movies out there. Personally, I'm the lowest common denominator, so I absolutely loved this film. I think a lot of people will end up saying the hype of Heath Ledger's performance was generated largely by his premature death, which is unfair. Except for maybe the first 30 seconds, I totally forgot Heath Ledger was playing him. That was some phenomenal acting.
INTENTIONALLY VAGUE SPOILER: the funniest part of the movie was the final hospital scene.
Ah, and my mom really DID go to see Mama Mia! this weekend.
