Jul 24 2008'Cowboy Bebop' Will Be Reenacted by Humans

Fans of Cowboy Bebop, begin writing your suicide pact: Fox is developing a live-action film version of your favorite bounty hunting space anime. From iF Magazine:

We caught up with producer-extraordinaire Erwin Stoff at the NBC TCAs where he was promoting his upcoming updated-David-and-Goliath-based show KINGS. When asked about other projects he is currently working on, Stoff, let slip some very juicy news about a very beloved anime franchise.

“I’m developing COWBOY BEBOP for Fox, but doing it as a live-action film, so I’m working on that at the moment,” Stoff tells iF. “I’m really excited to be working on it, and it’s in the really early stages. We just signed it the other day.”

“I have such an enormous admiration for its creators, that our first and foremost concern is going to be a real degree of faithfulness to the tone of the movie, to the mix of genres, and so on and so forth,” he says. “When I met with them in Japan, one of the first things that I brought up was the experience that we had on A SCANNER DARKLY, and how hard we worked to remain faithful to Philip K. Dick, and that was our big concern here.”

Miserable about the idea of watching Josh Hartnett (probably) run around in a mop of a wig, bastardizing the show you keep trying to get your less-nerdy friends to watch? Don't be! ...Yet. Wait until it's released, then criticize the shit out of it:

For those skeptical about the casting possibilities, Stoff has the following to say: “Flak about choices is meaningless until people see the movie," he notes. "When people see the movie, then criticism has a place in it.”

Fine, I'll reserve my judgment. But until then, I'll be working on preparing witty criticisms, so watch out. Cowboy Bebop? More like Cowboy Bullshit! (Like I said, I'm still working on these.)

first.

and this is a disaster. a fucking disaster. ANIME HAIR DOES NOT WORK IN REAL LIFE UNLESS YOU ARE A JAPANESE FEMALE WITH GLUE IN HER HAIR.

auuuugh this is such a classic and now its going to be ruined.

@1 Cowboy Bebop doesnt have dragonball z like hair. (theres really no need to say "first" no one gives a damn if you are. its just annoying)

I'm glad to hear this. i hope they dont mess this one up it was a very smart show imo.

you still havent announced the horrendous news that MTV is doing a remake of Rocky Horror.

Spike, Jet, & Faye's faces mirror my own opinion of this news.

Looks like this guy produced a whole lot of Keanu Reeves movies - Day the Earth Stood Still, Scanner Darkly, The Lake House, Constantine, The Matrix, The Replacements, Devil's Advocate, Chain Reaction, and Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.

If Spike is played by Keanu Reeves, I will be very, very upset.

Might look like this?

^ I know that guy. He's a lot thicker than what that photoshopped image suggests.

This is possibly the worst of the worst, the absolute most terrible idea I've ever seen for a movie.

1. CB is "art," not in the sense that it's esoteric or extremely good, but in the sense that one of it's purposes is to bend existing forms, and experiment with moods, characters, ideas, preconceptions, emotions, blah blah blah. Hollywood doesn't succeed with this kind of art, because Hollywood makes material for the general public.

2. Another purpose of anime is escaping some of the limitations of human form. Innovation in media requires the intentional change of existing standards, 'making mistakes on purpose.' Bringing real humans into something is not an improvement, it's simply gutting some of the juicy filling out and then warming yourself inside the carcass.

3. Who could possibly play Faye? The problem is not the body, it's pulling off the character who is intelligent, slightly cruel, secretly innocent, and pretending to be a major slut. Whose going to successfully recreate the 'oblivious genius' of Edward? How many actors do you know that understand 'less is more?'

I could keep going, but what's the point? What complete crap. It will be nothing buy a firefly clone by the time it's done.

@9 Agreed on the Firefly point. Firefly already came about as close as a live action series can come to capturing some of the themes and good bits of Cowboy Bebop. Firefly still wasn't Cowboy Bebop, even though it hit some of the same notes. It was its own thing, and thank God.

"bastardizing..." Nice word usuage.

Well I am distort to know that they are making it a film. I mean next thing they will be making Big O into one as well. Right along with Trigun and Ghost in the Shell. Good lord they really are grabbing here.

This is crazy news....It could be good...it could be bad. I, unlike some of the immature kids on here, will reserve judgement until I see the movie. Yes, CB is anime and its hard to convey onto the big screen with live actors...BUT it can be done. I mean...its no different really than making a comic into a film and plenty of those have been successful. Now Im not saying CB needs to have a huge budget, lame popular actors and be a summer blockbuster...but it can be a great film if they stick the source material very closely.

As for the dork who was whining about who they might get to play Faye...Um...a casting call can bring in thousands of actors/people. Im sure out of those 1000 even YOU could find someone who would be able to play a good Faye. So STFU and quit your bitching you peon. Who can play Ed? Again...same thing. If the producers TAKE THE TIME to do their research and work then it is possible to get actors who will be able to play the parts perfectly. Open your head up a little bit....its not hard.

NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark my words, they will f*ck this up.

@12 - It's vastly different from making a comic book into a movie. It's like remaking a really good movie, which is always completely f*cking unnecessary.

Hollywood is doing what it always does...taking things that are brilliant and making them idiotic so that Joe and Susie Shithead and their litter of mewling ape-children can sit, mouth agape and glassy-eyed, and look at the pretty explosions.

@ 3 MTV has been saying that for the last 10 years and nothing has ever come of it.

Dragonball, Akira, Cowboy Bebop... um... that one the Titanic director is doing....

(Absinthe make thinking hard!)

Is the 'anime based movie' the new 'comic book movie?'

Tetra...."the one that the Titanic director is doing"....Haha! His name is James Cameron and he's only one of the best directors Hollywood has and on top of that every movie he's done has been fucking great. Aliens, Terminator 1 and 2, The Abyss, Titanic, etc. etc. Im sure "avatar" (which is the one he's working on now) will be just as incredable as his previous films were.

Upon first hearing this, I'm intrigued. I hope it's good, and I can enjoy it. This is one of the few animes I love. And it takes a lot to make me love a show/movie set in space. This and Firefly/Serenity are the only two to ever accomplish that.

F-it. Anime is gay anyway

takeshi kaneshiro as spike
ron perlman as jet
ha

This will either be decent (the best i can see this or any other anime-based movie doing) or FLAMING PILE OF SHIT GILI/WATERWORLD BAD

also, lemme say i love anime, but leave it animated plz...kthanksbye

Jesus Christ. I've never had a more depressing scroll down through this blog than I had today. First MTV'S gonna remake Rocky Horror (oh Jesus, they'll probably cast Russell Brand as Frank-n-Furter) and now this? *This*?
No...no no no no. Oh my head!

oh god nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

well as long as he gets Reeves for Spike, theres no way it could go wrong. he is the greatest actor of all time.
after that we just need Michael Clarke Duncan as jet, and its prettymuch guarenteed to win best movie of all time award

I don't want to see it changed. I hated the animated movie because it couldn't possibly deal with the fundamental dynamic between Spike and Vicious (mostly because what played out between Spike and Vicious was sort dealt with elsewhere, and it couldn't resolve in a movie). I'd hate this if it gives too much away. I am worried they will try to explain too much, to add too much of a backstory beyond the simple images that fans adore from the flashbacks. I feel like it will fail if they use a villain besides Vicious, as no one else is meaningful to Spike, and really, I'd be bored by a movie that focuses on Faye.

...Though a movie length version of Jupiter Jazz would be wonderful. Real Life Gren would be hot beyond words. Just sayin'.

NOOOOOO FUCCCKKKKKIIIING WAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!!!!!!! why do they have the need to shit on everything by making a fucked up retarded ass remake, and they always pick the worse people for it, they don't even make an effort to make the characters actually resemble eachother.

goddamit

this will be horrible beyond all belief. besides, i think serenity now already too closely resembled bebop.

i think an feature-length version of mushroom samba would be excellent.

having said that, i think bruce campbell would make an excellent Jet. already looks good with a bionic arm. or, wait for it: bruce willis. no seriously, think Butch from pulp fiction as Jet.

as far as spike goes: there are few actors who can play "cool" as effortlessly as required: i think Depp with a healthy dose of wrinkle-remover could do it.

faye? anybody but Jolie. angela lindval (CQ) would be perfect.

ed: the olsen twins.

'CB' changed my life (no, really), so i already have mixed feelings about this. but it's gonna be completely pointless if they don't get yoko kanno to do the soundtrack. i'm talkin' steve conte and mai yamane singing with lyrics by tim jensen; the works. the music is such an integral part of this series and the animated movie that i don't see how anyone who knows anything about the anime would want to see it without yoko and the seatbelts contributing.

also, the animated movie was awesome #26. everytime i watch it i keep thinking it would be perfect for a live-action movie, but i guess you really should be careful what you wish for...

Shtar Warzh fans will never see this movie and there's absolutely no reason whatsoever to make a movie that's not for Shtar Warzh fans.

PS: Matt, you're a douche and your writing smells like you work at a film studio, spending your day saying, "Yes Sir," "That's great, Sir," "Wow, what a super idea, Sir," "Are you ready for me to wipe you yet, Sir?"

PPS: Fact #27 on why anime rewlz: Because the best of it goes completely over the heads of Shtar Warzh fans.

Yet another of many examples that Hollywood is truly out of original ideas. We've had a writers strike and an actors strike, maybe it's time for and audience strike.
I for one am sick of them churning out remake after remake or taking something that was done and putting a "set-for-today" twist on it. Most all of those films or shows were originally made because someone took a chance on it in the belief that it was good product and the audience would respond in kind. Yet those same execs who brought those ideas to their bosses back in the day are now sitting in their offices with their fingers in their ears yelling "lalalalalala" when ever an original thought tries to sneak past security.

I agree with 13. Scott in his generalization of todays movie going audience ("Joe and Susie Shithead and their litter of mewling ape-children can sit, mouth agape and glassy-eyed, and look at the pretty explosions." is probably one of the best descriptions I've heard in a while). In fact, we're probably more to blame than the sun-drenched suits offering their palm tree placebos in lieu of original entertainment. We're the ones that keep buying tickets to this crap and funding their idea of beating a dead horse is a marketable idea just because we liked the horse before it committed suicide. So we must love whatever flops out of it's carcass cause it came from the same source.

I will however reserve judgment on this particular film until I see what further develops. If from what these new Batman and Iron Man movies taught me it's that sometimes that horse can let out a dying gasp of excellent film making.

Oh and by the by, Keanu Reeves acting is shite!

i cant imagine japan liking a live action CB all that much. If a serious director was attached I'd feel less of a sense of impending depressing doom. After years of telling people "sure you say you dont like anime, but watch one episode of cowboy bebop and try NOT to think its awesome," a live action movie will just destroy any possibility of people giving the original series a chance. Bah I give up. American mainstream cinema has gone to hell in a handbasket. The only saving grace is that The Dark Knight might inspire a rebirth of actually well made film. Either that, oh we all jump ship, get online and watch stuff like Italian Spiderman instead.

I just read this and threw up all over myself. This is going to be a disaster.

Casting for Spike had better be awesome... and Ein had better be a Welsh Freakin Corgi. I don't wanna see him as a German Shepard or whatever. Next, they're gonna ruin Trigun... TRIGUN! :(
