Jun 23 2008Weekend Box Office: 'Get Smart' Hopefully Destroyed Chances of Another 'Austin Powers'
1. Get Smart - $39.2 million, because $12 had to be spent on something new, and the newer iPods cost more than $12, and, give me a break, The Love Guru?
2. Kung Fu Panda - Another $21.7 million, thanks largely to Jack Black's fearless delivery of such lines as, "Who da man? Pan-da man!" I'm assuming that was a line in the movie.
3. The Incredible Hulk - Though it earned less than Ang Lee's Hulk in its opening weekend, the film's second weekend has fared better, grossing $21.6 million and inciting cries for director Louis Leterrier to make The Incredible Ice Storm.
4. The Love Guru - A sad, $14 million showing left Mike Myers wishing he could go back in time to write in a joke about how the ridiculously small audiences are sort of similar to how Verne Troyer is also very small. Oh well--save it for Guru 2!
5. The Happening - Still somehow clinging to the top five with another $10 million. I blame trees.

Finally Meyers can die. I hope the movie cost him 5times what it pulled him this round. Maybe IDK the public is saying "STOP MAKING MOVIES!" the only ones i know that want to see this are middle schoolers and GASP they don't have the money for it. GG way to grab an audience which needs to beg for a ride let alone cash.

As much as the Love Guru looked like the suck, its failure means that Austin Powers 4 is probably more likely as its proabably the only way he'll be able to get a studio to back another one of his craptatsic films.

@2: You're most likely right about that. "Austin Powers? That's a proven commodity! Give him $100 million!"
Myers used to be good. Wayne's World 1 was decent, the first Austin Powers (which was actually not a huge success in the theatre) was good enough, So I Married an Axe Murderer was actually pretty damned funny.
The rest has been dreck though, IMHO. He lost me at Austin Powers 2 and I'm actually surprised it has taken this long for most of the ticket buyers to get sick of him too.
At least this guarantees I won't want to slap the sh** out of someone at the office when they show up dressed up as the Love Guru this Halloween.

I took my mother to see Get Smart this weekend... I thought I was going to hate it but she enjoys cheesy comedy so I caved. I laughed... a lot. I was surprised.

I'm glad to see that I was right about Kung Fu Panda continuing to gross well. It really was a good laugh-out-loud kinda movie. Gees, Mr. I Watch Stuff guy, do you just have something against Jack Black, or what? :)
