Jun 12 2008'The Clone Wars' Trailer Has Me Reluctantly Tapping My Foot to the Tune of Star Wars
Did you ever have a band you really liked that quickly declined into making really shitty music for many years, and you sort of forget about them being a current band until, one day, on the radio, you hear something vaguely familiar and not that terrible anymore--it's that old band you liked! And you're like, "While this is clearly well below the standards of their hey-day, it seems all right. I mean, I'd never, ever buy the album--they've clearly lost most of their early talent and the rest of the tracks are probably rubbish--but it's at least nice to know they're trying again."
That's basically how I felt with this new Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

That band is called Weezer
2. Uncle Eccoli - June 12, 2008 12:33 PM
I hate the way the characters look, like action figures come to life. It's very distracting.
3. The Geekologist - June 12, 2008 12:42 PM
Freaking brilliant, I felt the exact same way.
4. Phil - June 12, 2008 12:43 PM
Every line of dialogue in that trailer is a Star Wars cliche.
"Everything is going as planned"
"I can't shake him!"
"Now you die"
etc...
Who cares about Star Wars anymore? Sheeeesh
5. Mark - June 12, 2008 12:48 PM
I was going to say Weezer, but I think that gives too much credit to 'Pork & Beans.'

I suddenly wish the most recent three Star Wars had been completely animated. Maybe I would have been able to still my gag reflex if it had been a cartoon.
7. Zyclonis - June 12, 2008 2:12 PM
Where's the red band trailer for this? j/k... anyway, as much as I like star wars (and interest began to seriously drop when TPM was viewed). The character designs are really hard to look at.
8. James007 - June 12, 2008 2:26 PM
that still shot looks like 3 guys lined up at a urinal
I'm wrong right?
9. policegirl - June 12, 2008 2:49 PM
Why can't George Lucas spend some of his millions on some decent CGI and not this super-deformed crap?
lol @ James007! I thought the same thing.
10. Kirls - June 12, 2008 6:13 PM
Does that robot just said "BASTARD"?
11. 2fat2curious - June 12, 2008 6:34 PM
Thanks for painfully reminding me of Third Eye Blind.
sigh, so sad.

The cut scenes look awesome, I hope the gameplay is cool. /sarcasm

#6: You mean they weren't cartoons?
14. will - June 13, 2008 1:56 AM
It doesn't look TOO bad. I've been saying the last few years that george lucas should just cut the crap and make a whole cgi movie if he loves it so much and fills live action movies with it. At least now we wont have to witness the terribly-achieved combination of the two alla Indiana Jones 4. The production design on this is interesting, but the colour spectrum just looks a little too video game cutscene for me. Somewhere between this caricaturisation and the realism of Final Fantasy: Spirits Within would be more awesome. To me. But what do I know. I just watch movies. I always forget that film-making is just all about doing exactly what YOU want and not what your audience will appreciate in any way. George Lucas eat a poo. Eat a big big poo.
15. Betrayed - June 13, 2008 5:29 AM
If this trailer was shown eight years ago I would have needed a change of underwear.
Now I'll a dump on George Lucas on purpose, cause you can't fix what you broke: My love for Star Wars... you bastard.
PS: Sounds like a hot date for any of you ladies? hahahahaa! Seriously though, a BIG F you Lucas.

OK is it just me or does the "bearded android" remind you of the ice mask that they used in the first Superman movie.

Why is it that Americans either need photorealism for animated films that are meant to be for more than children, or need cartoonish animation in films marketed for children? It's kind of ridiculous, and I guess why Persepolis didn't get an Oscar.

"Why is it that Americans either need photorealism for animated films"
What a stupid comment. Why is it that snobs attempt to sound intelligent by making blanket statements about Americans. Why do you assume that everyone here is an American? So long as you feel like assuming we're all American, I'll assume you're French. In that spirit, I suggest you stick to French websites you cheese-eating surrender monkey!
19. craig - June 14, 2008 2:43 AM
hell yes #18 , and Mr Lucas you should of stuck with what made your movies good in the first place it wasent the special effects it was the story. also if ILAM sposed to be the leading in special effects why do i still consider Jurrasic park dinosuars way more realistic then all of the new star wars combined?

Ugh...more Star Wars? Cant we hurry along and get to Star Trek 11 and destroy the Star Trek Franchise too?? Star Wars has already had enough...
24. groonk - June 19, 2008 4:33 AM
fuck me. that might actually work.
25. Dany - June 19, 2008 6:52 AM
F*****ig cool
26. Sadiki - June 20, 2008 10:31 AM
Although I'm not a die-hard Star Wars fan -he says, not knowing whether he is lying or not- I thought the animation i.e the lighting, the sound effects, the colour and the look of the charatcers except Dooku was quite good. But what would you expect from somebody who wants to be an artist.
However I agree with 4. Phil that all the dialogue was cliche
27. Sioux - June 24, 2008 10:25 AM
Well, I'll be seeing this for the same reason I only watched the last three Star wars movies, for the artistic part of it and the fighting choreography.
To begin with the storyline for these last few films was thin and hard to get along with as it felt more like Lucas hadn't finished these in script form at all and portions didn't match up with any of the established universes the original three movies laid down.
Along with the fact that he was strangling our eyes with visual effects and 3D graphics most of the time rather than allowing acting and good ol' fashioned cinematography(happy accidents) work for the movie. And as the three movies went on you slowly saw real actors becoming less and less important and you had most actors giving really dry performances in scenes where good acting was needed most(ewan mcgregor was the only one who really put in any effort it seemed like and at times, Natalie Portman). I swear, the only good thing these movies brought us were better ways of digitally matte painting, innovation in conceptual design work and some cool sword fights.
28. Corbijn - June 25, 2008 4:22 AM
I like how those who complain about Star Wars generally see the films, buy the dvd's and end up being able to quote the films. Maybe these people are just sore that the other kid down the block had more Star Wars action figures and the sight of these films makes them curl up in a ball sucking their thumbs thinking mommy didn't love me enough.
If Lucas never made Star Wars, there wouldn't be THX sound, great CGI and special effects, a return to decent sci-fi movies (remember The Omega Man?), epic soundtracks, digital projectors, and the list goes on. Yeah they have some flaws but so what? Sci-fi is in the eye of the beholder, anyone still bitch about Dune?
Lucas made these films from scratch having to push to get them started, now he's a god in the movie world. He has helped revolutionize the way films are made than anyone in the history of film. Lucas also seems to want to do this because he loves movies and the art of them. Who cares if he wants to make an abstract CGI film, anyone seen the Clone Wars cartoon? It rocked and this is just another step. I can't wait to see this. It just seems like anything he does just opens the door for everyone else.
29. guate6 - June 25, 2008 3:01 PM
I'm surprised the writer didn't mention the Clone Wars episodes that were debuted onto Cartoon Network in 2003. I watched them, 24 mini-episodes I believe. While they painted the picture of what happened between episode 2 and 3, they were still animated, and "alright."
In any case, I don't know what to think about this. I hope it succeeds, but who knows...
30. Bobeyo - June 25, 2008 8:28 PM
#29, OF COURSE (former) Star Wars fans are the only ones complaining about this crap. It's because we're the only ones who CARE that that which we used to love is being dragged through the mud and driven to a horrifying, agonizing death!
I mean, just scroll back to the top and LOOK at that thing. Ever since Return of the Jedi, George Lucas has been slowly but surely gearing Star Wars more and more toward a younger and younger audience, over-using CGI more and more, making everything more and more like... well, like a freakin' CGI cartoon for little kids. The kind of thing an adult can't even WATCH and take seriously in the slightest.
The above is simply the confirmation of this, the culmination of Lucas's revolting efforts. He has literally stripped the movie of all its humanity, seriousness, and maturity. You might as well be watching the Saturday morning cartoons.
Star Wars is dead, and its very creator is the one who killed it.
31. TW!STED - June 26, 2008 5:00 AM
Wait, so is this a movie or a video game? cause to me it looks a little too much like a video game cutscene
32. R4 - June 27, 2008 5:02 AM
Total bull, especially that B-wing looking fighter anakin pilots...
Everyone knows Admiral Akbar designed the B-Wing!!!!
33. kel - June 27, 2008 3:54 PM
sighh.. i think maybe the reason he wants to experiment in animation and all the special effects is because granted is more room with imagination and all that you cannot successfully accomplish (scene wise) in the real world.
this lets him express anything and everything he can possible think, create, and come up with....
i believe he's earned his right to do with star wars what he'd like...
have a great day!
-Kk.
34. kronius - June 27, 2008 5:48 PM
Lucas will not get another dime from me unless it is me buying a digitally remastered DVD/Bluray version of the pre-special edition episodes 4-6.
After the horror that is episodes 1-3 and IJ4, I will assume anything else he does is crap.
35. Corbijn - June 28, 2008 7:35 AM
You don't think that the original Star Wars were geared to younger audiences? Uh, Ewoks? What about action figures and lunch boxes?
The films have always been geared towards a younger audience. I watched the original when it opened, I was 5 at the time. I think the griping audience just grew up and lost that inner child imagination. And that ship Anakin is flying looks nothing like a B-wing.
Also, if you think anything else Lucas has done is crap, throw away all your Indiana Jones movies, THX1138 & American Graffiti. Besides, he and Stephen Colbert fought with lightsabers, that was great.
36. Crappola - June 30, 2008 2:45 PM
Please! oh Please! Take us out of this time machine that continually plays the Clone Wars as a major incident in the Star Wars galaxy.
37. Bobeyo - July 1, 2008 3:36 PM
@36: In case you didn't notice, Ewoks didn't come around until the 3rd Star Wars movie, which was when Lucas started gearing it toward kids. I don't think there was a single person alive at the time who didn't cringe when they first saw the Ewoks. Little did they know then that it was all downhill from there.
Seriously though, if you can watch Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back and not see that they are clearly intended for more mature audiences than the prequels, then you're kidding yourself.
38. Higglebiggle - July 6, 2008 2:36 AM
i love star wars princess leia or leya however da fuck u spell it is hotter then hell n u kno wut this movie will prolly be good it seems to be basically the same as the cartoon mini series n i loved that
39. media boy - August 12, 2008 5:27 PM
so Lucas finally got to make (or a least approve of) a whole Star Wars movie after his love for CGI... looks fun though
