May 13 2008The Octopus from 'The Spirit' Must be One of Two Things
Admittedly, I've never read Will Eisner's The Spirit, so someone will have to tell me: is Spirit's arch-nemesis The Octopus like a '70s pimp with Mickey Mouse's hands or an eccentric grandma who you pray will never pick you up from school? Whichever the case, hopefully he also acts exactly like Samuel L. Jackson, because I have a feeling that's what we're going to get.

Looks promising. I don't recall the comic but I may have to pick it up for a refresher.

Great actor, no question.
But I think the Octopus was "slightly different", less cool and samjacksonish.
This movie sucks, got nothing to do with the original comic.
MY CITY SCREAMS... blablabla

I'm getting so tired of people who are mad the movie didn't follow the comic. Do you know how bad it would be if they did? have you seen the 80's batman movies? Real comics are like Soap operas, so good for all those directors that can take a confusing overly-plot ridden story and adapt it into a watchable movie experience.

The Octopus was originally a master of disguise. Nobody ever saw his face, (making this shot all the more ironic) he would often impersonate other characters from the comic's storyline as a part of his nefarious schemes and the only thing that would ever give him away were his signature gloves, which do indeed look pretty damn Mickey-ish (though they were originally dark in color with contrasting lighter-colored stripes).
Frank Miller is basically just taking Eisner's characters and running them through the Frank Miller Magic Movie Machine. He's never done a comic or graphic novel adaptation of the material, this isn't based on any specific comic or story-arc, from all accounts he's been approached to provide this treatment based solely on the look, feel and success of the Sin City movie.

Over the top........oi. I really loved the posters and stuff, until I saw the trailer.....*sigh*. (why in that is the moving so jerky..o.O?) Frankly I'm getting a bit sick of Sammy J...

Just like GiantDrunkenRobot said, his character isn't supposed to be seen. He's really only supposed to be a siloutte and a voice and to show his face is to completely ruin the character. But hey it's Frank Miller's The Spirit.
p.s. if you want to see a really good example of The Spirit check out the original by Eisner and the newer work by Darwin Cooke.
