May 16 2008'City of Ember' Trailer: Like 'Escape from New York' but Less Criminal Statey
The problem with American-made underground bunker cities is that the generators always seem to die after a couple hundred years. Unfortunately, it looks like it's about that time for Ember--a city whose only source of electricity comes from a failing hydroelectric unit--when a young girl finds a clock counting down to nothing. "What would count down to nothing?" she asks. "Sounds like doomsday." Or an egg timer. Now it's up to her, her friend, mayor Bill Murray, and Tim Robbins to find a way out. If you've seen Shawshank Redemption, you know this won't be an issue for Tim Robbins, so relax and enjoy this new trailer. (Thanks, Joe.)

I was thinking more fallout1 but with less violence and gore and more Bill Murray yammering

Yes, this is definitely Fallout. From the wikipedia article on said post-apocalyptic computer game:
The game takes place in 2161 in Southern California and begins in Vault 13, the protagonist's home. Vault 13's Water Chip, a computer chip responsible for the water recycling and pumping machinery, has broken. The Vault Overseer tasks the protagonist with finding a replacement.
I guess that in this case, there's no second hydroelectric unit.

I was definitely lost whilst watching that trailer. It makes much more sense once someone said it was based on Fallout.
Thanks Morley!

Guess their vault didn't come with a G.E.C.K...

Here is some actual information on its origins. City of Ember is based on the young adult novel of the same name by Jeanne DuPrau. There are two follow-up novels (one is a prequel) and a third is supposed to be forthcoming.
It is clearly not based on Fallout because the trailer is lacking mutant hookers.

First thought was also Fallout.

I read the book (and sequel) a couple of years ago...
Looks like they've ruined it.
Oh my.

War, war never changes. The end of the world occurred pretty much as we predicted, too many humans, not enough space or resources to go around. The details are trivial and pointless, the reasons, as always, purely human ones. The earth was nearly wiped clean of life. A great cleansing, an atomic spark struck by human hands quickly raged out of control. Spears of nuclear fire rained from the skies, continents were swallowed in flames and fell beneath the boiling oceans. Humanity was almost extinguished, their spirits becoming part of the background radiation that blanketed the earth. A quiet darkness fell across the planet, lasting many years.
And oh yeah, I hope one of the character has "bloody mess".

The trailer does have a dark and ominous feel to it, but I think that it follows the imagery
from the novel accurately. I’m excited to see a talented cast of actors bring the characters
to life. I think Bill Murray will make a remarkable villain as Mayor Cole! Plus the movie
will relay the message of energy conservation that is really needed in today’s world.
My name is Blair and I am an official ambassador for City of Ember and I have access to first-look pics of the movie not seen in the trailer, which I would be more than happy to share with you. I would love to have your help spreading the word about City of Ember and get the buzz going!
I hope I’m not over stepping any bounds by posting on your blog.
Hope to speak with you soon.
Best,

Are you fucking serious. The mystery of why they were in a dark place (it wasn't even made obvious that they were underground, though you could guess) is what made the book worthwhile. WHY REVEAL THE PLOT IN A FUCKING TRAILER??
The mounting excitement came as they slowly uncovered the clues left behind by their forebears, whom the audience slowly realizes are much like themselves. I am now fairly convinced that this film will suck tremendously.

Why would bill Murray worry about dying in a cave? When he dies he's going to receive total consciousness. So you know; he's got that going for him.

When are they going to make a movie out of the game Fallout? This should also have Bill Murray as well as Kurt Russell, Steve Buscemi, Rose McGowen, and Peter Weller.
