Apr 25 2008'The Spirit' Teaser Trailer Reveals Spirit May Wear Some Type of Neck Adornment
Talking at the Spirit panel at New York Comic Con, the lecherous director Frank Miller (strangely, while dressed as a unshaven Spirit) spoke of his unending admiration for his mentor Will Eisner's comic, and of his hope of faithfully recreating it on the screen. So I find it a bit odd that, as many expected, Miller has made the film look like a slightly cleaner Sin City. True respect = smothering the original vision with your own high-contrast fantasy world? Judge the teaser trailer for yourself here, then let me know what you think. Is this guy more obsessed with his city screaming or that f***ing red tie?
And I'm aware this has been up for a few days. Deal.

"Man attacked by giant red less-than symbol". Film at 11.

Red tie reminds me of Hitman. Also he looks like a very clumsy runner, haha. Overall... Self-absorbed, much?

Very Frank Miller. Very not Will Eisner. The only filmmakers I can think of that have the wit, intelligence, and skill to pull off a faithful Spirit adaptation are the Coen Brothers. Miller lacks any sort of subtlety needed for a project like this.

Yeah it's funny how this looks "comic book" but it looks nothing like the original Spirit comics.

This 'll be one of the first movies of the new century, that HAS to be remade in an few years. In a more accurate way, like they did it with Casino Royale.
I hope so.

This just absolutely does not work as live action. The only proper way to do a Spirit movie is with hand drawn animation.

I'm sure the music is just temp, because it's from "The Untouchables."

Will people be able to differentiate this from Sin City. Will Frank Miller get away with the same trick twice ? Will a film without bankable stars make any bank ?
Find out in the Spirit.

@ 9: It has Samuel L. Jackson in it. Everyone loves SLJ.

Ok, so this movie is so damn much like Sin City it hurts.
But forgetting that, the line that bugs me is "She is my mother. She is my lover. And I am her Spirit."
The city is his mother AND his lover?...
Dear Frank Miller,
2 words: Oedipus Complex

Must confess to not knowing much about The Spirit comics, but I do remember Sin City and unless this is just a thrown together teaser, it owes much to that flick.
The Spirit wears tennis shoes? I remember the clive Owen character from Sin City wearing tennis shoes and doing incredible (animated) jumps.
I'm on my way" - Wasn't that Sky Captain's tagline from Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow?

TommyP, I think you're right :s...

"I'm on my way" was also the famous phrase of Dick Tracy in the comics, which predates both Sin City and Sky Captain. I think it's sufficiently iconic to be considered public domain.

Did Will Eisner draw The Spirit w/ those keds sneakers?
Lame, Frank. Really lame. You should have stayed more true to Eisner's work like Rodriguez did for you on Sin City. I'm probably judging too soon but it looks like Miller took this a little too far in his own direction.
