Jules Dassin, the 96-year-old director of the award-winning Never on Sunday and the classic heist flick Rififi, died Monday following a short illness. As a memorial, I suggest watching Night and the City, starring the also-recently-deceased Richard Widmark. It will really make you think, man, it's too bad those two guys died, even though they lived into their 90s and were no longer making films anyway.

Thanks for sharing the sad news, Ted, you downer.

This is so sad. Just awFIRST!!! Seriously, it is tragic. I was a huge fan. I'll miss Jules Verne terribly.

I, for one, would like to express my sincere regrets on Dassin's passing. I have every hope to live to 150, so every time someone under that age dies, I consider my chances to be that much smaller.

Also, a few of Dassin's films were really fucking cool. Thieves' Highway didn't really grab me, but Night and the City and Rififi are two of my favorites. Even The Naked City's got its moments. Dassin himself seemed pretty cool on those Criterion Collection interviews they did for the DVD releases of Night and the City and Thieves' Highway.
