Mar 19 2008Wright, Cera Taking On 'Pilgrim'
With Hollywood's glittering paw pressed firmly to the pulse of the hip, Universal has recognized that there may be some money to be had in these "graphic novels" that everyone seems to be talking about these days. The studio is hoping to start production this fall on an adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's indie pseudo-Manga Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life. But before you start fretting that your favorite story of a slacker forced to battle his dream girl's seven evil ex-boyfriends will be crushed in the movie machine, listen to this: it turns out it's being handled correctly! Universal has attached Shaun of the Dead's talented Edgar Wright to direct, with everyone's favorite awkward underdog incarnate, Michael Cera, in final talks to take on the title role.
It's sort of a double-edged sword: I'm excited for the possibilities inherent in another* Wright/Cera collaboration, but as someone who's had absolutely no interest in Pilgrim since flipping through it at a friend's place, I'm also thinking, "Great, now I'll have to f***ing read it." Do any fans of the series have a more informed opinion?
*Another collaboration, you (I) say? The first is under the cut!

The books are awesome. We'll see what they can do with it.

THIS WOULD ACTUALLY BE PERFECT. P-E-R-F-E-C-T. Best casting ever in a comic adaptation. Would actually make it BETTER than the already fantastic comic.

Now all we need is that BOOSTER GOLD/BLUE BEETLE crossover movie... A man can dream... a man can dream...

Scott Pilgrim is mediocre at best.

Scott Pilgrim is great. Wright and Cera are bad to mediocre. That's some depressing casting.

I know the ether hasn't entirely worn off, Martin, so I'm excusing your comment about Wright and Cera.
It's news to me that these comics even exist, but I will gladly watch the results of that collaberation.

T's comment on the Comics Should Be Good blog was spot on:
"Geez, this is horrible news. I got the impression that Scott was supposed to be a good-looking slacker with manchild charm, not an ugly dork with a bland delivery".
What's next, Michael Cera as James Bond?

I would never have thought of this casting, but it's genius. Pure genius.
Now who do we get to play knives?

Anyhow, yeah. It is decent news. Scott Pilgrim is maybe TOO awesome to work? But Cera, if he has another persona beside the giant boy persona, can work.
