Mar 13 2008New 'Speed Racer' Trailer is So Cool Beans
A new domestic trailer to Speed Racer has arrived, forcing some retro kitsch into its computer-generated candy world with the addition of a "cool beans!" moment. Aside from conspicuously dated slang, the new trailer also gives us disturbing hints of incest, and the shocking revelation that the protagonist--whose birth name is Speed Racer--has had an unnatural fascination with speed racing for his entire life. Who would have thought? Despite all the eye-roll-inducing dialogue--true to the series but not really much worse than Matrix lines--I'm finding myself strangely drawn to the Wachowskis' psychedelic, phsyics-free racing fantasy.

Even for a kids movie, this looks retarded as hell. At least you can point the actual moment when the next generation of kids become more ADD than we ever thought. This movie is for people who think Meth is a downer.

Only Ricci could pull off that line "cool beans."
I think it looks actually pretty good. Though, I have to say, I don't know much about Speed Racer.

My only cultural reference point for Speed Racer is that Joey and Chandler used to have a poster in their apartment in early seasons of Friends... nothing you can say can match the disapointment I feel in myself for knowing this fact.
Anyway, I will happily part with cold hard cash to sit back and have my eye-balls melted by this effort. And the 'bad' dialogue is pitch perfect for what is essentially the most faithful live-action anime yet attempted to be made.

go watch the old shows. they are cheesy as hell too. there is no way they could have held true to the show and NOT make it cheesy. I can't wait.

Okay, I take it back. If you're all telling me that horrible, wooden acting is actually staying true to the original, then maybe Matthew Fox was a great choice.

The Wachowski bros certainly put a lot of effort into making Speed Racer... the movie overall looked and felt like a cross between anime, a kaleidoscope, that Flintstones movie, a video game and the Dukes of Hazard
