Mar 7 2008'Nerdcore Rising' Trailer is Pretty Effin' Nerdy
Nerdy-hip-hop-sub-genre documentary Nerdcore Rising is having its premiere this Sunday at SxSW, so rapper MC Frontalot was kind enough to send over the trailer. I was only vaguely aware of the genre, so I didn't know what to expect. Would Linux be the new shorty? Would Ron Paul replace Biggie as a fallen idol reference? Yeah, pretty much.
But if that's your cup of tea (can of Mountain Dew?), check out the trailer under the cut.

Hello,
My name is Ron Paul. I would just like to take a moment to thank everyone for the militant freakish support I garnered this past few months while running for the office of the Presidency. I feel that just prior to my concession it is important to make this distinction for you and the rest of the world: You are not Ron Paul. I am Ron Paul. You blew my chances by paraphrasing at every opportunity what you think I was talking about. You pretended your own thoughts were mine; you went rabid on radio stations at at local five and dimes about what I would do and what I believe in. Sure it's kind of interesting to have a rabid freak fan base, but in the end you sunk my battleship.
To conclude I must reiterate. I am Ron Paul. You are an idiot beating your chest and tooting your very own horn in my name.
You may not know the difference between us. I do.
You are not Ron Paul.
Sincerely,
Ron Paul

I was wondering why I had been introducing myself as Ron Paul lately. Thank you for clarifying.

aren't the beastie boys the original nerdcore rappers?

So whether it's a "thug" image or a "nerd" image, rap music is all about boasting how much of a cliche you are?
Wow.
Who the hell cares about this?? Wierd al says it best "ironic juxtaposition of two disparate cultures." It's the same joke being repeated over and over. (You see? He raps! But he's a nerd!! Isn't that unexpected??)

The point of nerdcore isn't to Weird Al parody rap music, the point is there's no rule that you can't rap about computers, or video games, or whatever you like. These guys just like to rap about different stuff. It's not a gag, it's their music. Eminem does something similar, he just went with a shocking kind of fiction, completely indifferent to the taboo of the vocabulary he works with, no compromises to create the perfect rhyme.
Frankly, I find that all the nerdcore I've listened to lacks the flow and limberness of what I'd consider the "great" rappers. It's all so mechanical sounding. Perhaps that's part of the conceit as well, but I find it grating after a while. Nevertheless, I can appreciate the attempt at pushing the boundary of rap past the "ghetto gangsta" stereotype.

the clip at 1:20 was pretty cool. MC Chris blows, Pee Pants for life.
