Feb 15 2008'Batman: Gotham Knights' Preview

batman-gotham-knight-previe.jpg

This preview to Batman: Gotham Knight--a collection of six anime-style Batman shorts--would be a lot more interesting if two-thirds of it wasn't spent explaining who Batman is. This fella's some sort of vigilante? You don't say! Dresses like a bat, too? Seems a bit far-fetched, but I'll give it a shot.

But despite the superfluous interviews, my general cynicism towards anime, and Bruce Wayne looking suspiciously like a wood nymph, I found myself surprisingly intrigued by this vision of the superhero. It has to be at least as good as Joel Schumacher's interpretation, right?

"...But Batman, by the nature of the fact that he's a human being, that he doesn't have super powers of any kind, that's much more in line with what the typical Japanese anime superhero is all about..."

Wait, what?

Ah, crap. They took it off.

it was awesome , but how can I purchase it. Also Thomas is a turd.

I FUCKING HATE ANIME. I AM SICK OF THIS SHIT.

Gah, it's not available anymore!

Oh well, anime is crap anyway. Seriously, couldn't they get an American studio to do this? I'm sure *someone* could have done it justice, and not made it look like a style that's been excessively done to death.

I found a link to the video that's probably more legit. You're welcome Stockholm.

I officially love this site now. I'm so glad to find a place where people share my undying hatred of anime. I'm so sick of anime I could puke. And now they're making an anime BATMAN?! And he looks like a wood nymph? GAH!

KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!

I love your sites... love your writing... but every time I go to view one of your posted videos, it's gone. If you're interested in posting that content, perhaps you should look at actually hosting that content so it doesn't disappear within 10 minutes of you posting it.

no offense guys... but love it or hate it... anime is hitting the mainstream

what i mean is its becoming very profitable >_

man whoever likes comic books but cant come to enjoy at least some anime is a dipshit.

Actually, #9, Anime has been in the mainstream for years now. It's everywhere. It's ridiculously, outlandishly popular. It invades everything. it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to get away from it. And it all looks so stupid and has such ridiculous storylines that I'll never understand how it got to be this way. Anime is an "art" founded on cheap animation. Literally, most of the anime "style" (quick flash-frames during fights, one or two animation frames when speaking, weird line backgrounds to indicate movement, etc.) is based on decisions made by Japanese animators to cut costs because they couldn't produce animation of the same quality as Disney films like Bambi. And today we praise this cheap junk as being great. I hate it. It looks terrible. My only hope is that one day its popularity will die out and we'll return to good Batman cartoons like the original Batman: The Animated Series.

#11, you did know that some of the earliest -and best- episodes of Batman where animated by TMS. A Japanese company, while the rest where farmed out to Koreans who also did all of the Simpsons. The Return of the Joker was Completely done in Japan to boot. _______________________ Question to all posters: do you all have remotes and feet? I mean, just switch channels or walk by averting or closing your eyes the aisle of DVDs, Manga -Japanese comics- or Magazines. It's that simple. Do you all need a youtube video to baby walk you to grasp this idea? ______________________________ Use all this Mindless vapid frustrated hate for what needs it. hollyweird dramas, the new silly-fied "can't we all get along?" season of "24", snuff films, filthy arabs protesting the Evil America by sawing off heads, setting mines to kill civilians and harvesting organs, that damn neighbor with a dog that can't spot barking in the middle of night, That toast always landing on the buttered side, punks keying your prius, the $3+ per gallon gas sending you into debt on you "save mother gaia" bumper sticker'd Hummer...

I think it's cute when xenophobic nerds in america make a distinction between american cartoons and anime.

Fact: starting in the early 80s about 90% of american cartoons were designed and or animated by japanese in conjunction with american franchises (transformers, gi joe, ghost busters, etc)

Fact: even comic books use japanese artists these days.

judging anime by what airs in america is absurd. In fact, even reffering to anime without some kind of genre qualifier is completely ignorant. It's like if i were to say "all american movies are bad." They arent, but it's not difficult to see why i would think that, especially if i'm youre average pedestrian who doesnt watch the good movies. The same goes for anime, what airs is what companies buy and think will net them the most profit. Can i make toys out of it? is there fantasy violoence? check check, dollar signs. You see? Not all anime is the same. Some is made for children, some is made for teenagers, some for girls, some for nerds. There are so many different genres of anime and manga that the blanket generalization is outdated. This isnt 1984 when the only anime ive ever seen is lupin the 3rd in a lazer disc arcade game, and voltron. There are a lot of talented people working in the field. Not all anime has stupid fights, awful scripts, moving lines, one or two frame talking animation. In japan its big money, to say that the style is based on cutting corners is pretty much retarded. Considering that EVERY american animation house farms out japanese talent just goes to show how right i am. Japanese have had a hand in every groundbreaking animated feature in the states over the last 18 years, and thats a fact.

I hate anime too, but since it's Batman I may TRY to watch it.

Anime is pretty to look at, but is as deep as a tea cup, despite its fanboys spinning it otherwise. The expositional voice-overs are painful.

I love to hear what the redneck anime haters consider to be good American animation...

lol anime sucks and anyone who likes it is a fag, lol.

lol i cud ttly agreee witchu about teh anime lol but lol i jus kant agree witchu lol...lol....lol lol lol.....lol

llooll

What any of you twelve year olds don't know is only shallow anime makes it to America in abundance. Kids eat it up because it's flashy and doesn't have story. But how about you watch Samurai Champloo or Cowboy Beebop or Ghost in the Shell (the movie. NOT the show....yes there is a movie) or Spirited Away or Whisper of the Heart or Tokyo Godfathers or Millennium Actress or...don't.
You've already made up your minds anyways. It's not like ignorant people are very eager to try new things. But if you get the chance, turn off the anime channels on TV, don't read manga, and instead look up some legitimate anime shows and/or anime movies. You'll be surprised at how much good entertainment you've been missing. You might even call it, oh I don't know....art? lol lol lol

And please, before you bash anything as being bad, please learn to spell the English language correctly and use proper punctuation. It just might make people take you seriously. Srsly.

i agree with poop, thomas is a turd

I love it. Studio 4ÂșC, Ghibli, Production IG. The best animation studios are there. If you don't have acess the good anime, dont put all in the same bag, ignorants.

"Anime is pretty to look at, but is as deep as a tea cup"

Take a look at "Tenshi no Tamago", "Kino no Tabi", "Jin Roh", "Ghost in the Shell", "Nausicaa", "Memories", "Haibane Renmei", "Tekkon Kinkreet", "Eternal Family", "Paprika", "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust", "Urusei Yatsura - Beautiful Dreamer", "Wings of Honneamise", "Tokyo Godfathers", "Paranoia Agent", "Mushishi", "Byousoku 5 Centimeter", "Dennou Coil", "Tamala2010", "Millennium Actress", "Hoshi no Koe", "Future Boy Conan", "Spring and Chaos", "Grave of the Fireflies", etc

There is a bunch of outstanding animes out there. Dont put all in the same bag.
