Jan 14 2008'The Hobbit' Sequel To Lead Into 'Lord of the Rings'?
Elijah Wood has sent shockwaves through the geek community with the comment that, according to an email from Peter Jackson, while the first of two planned Hobbit will cover the book, the second will serve as a bridge between that and Lord of the Rings.
I haven’t spoken to him directly about it [but] I’ve e-mailed him, and as far as I know the two films that they’re doing, one will be ‘The Hobbit’ and another will take place between the 60 years that happened between ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings.'
The problem with this? That aside from some brief mentions of a few events that occur in the interim period, there is no actual information as to what happened between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, meaning any film covering that span would basically be glorified fan-fiction (minus the standard fan-fic inclusion of furry erotica).
For once, can't we just be happy with what we have, and not try to bleed every bit of life out of this? If there were a story meant to be told between books, I'm sure Tolkien would have written it. Let's just make a televised Hobbit Holiday Special and call it a day. Or at least leave in the furry erotica.

Cut, print, gay.

I don't know why people would care now about Jackson departing from Tolkien's original work. They didn't care when he did it with the first three movies.

You've misread the source.
There is actually CONSIDERABLE documentation (primarily tolkein's notes) on the events between the Hobbit and LotR - it's not fanfic.
What they said, however, is that there isn't much known about the period with respect to Frodo, specifically; meaning that Woods' involvement will be either invented or minimal. As for the rest of the main players in the stories, however, there is a wealth of original material to work off of without creating anything new. (This, by the way, happens to be Hollywood's specialty)

I agree with Scooby, and I have confidence in Peter Jackson to make these movies great.

I'm Peter Jackson's grandmother, and I can confirm that the second movie will be a furry fanfic. As Tolkien intended.
Look it up.

Sadly, being a geek, I've read enough of the 12 volume The History of Middle Earth to know that there is plenty of material that Tolkien wrote and played with covering this period. Though, I'm not quite sure what the binding plot will be.
If it works, then perhaps the Tolkien Estate would consent to selling the rights to the other stories of Middle Earth. The Children of Hurin, The Lay of Beren and Luthien, The Drowning of Numenor, and The Fall of Gondor are all shorter stories with enough material to fill a movie nicely.
Oops, I forgot to be sarcastic. Sorry.

a rift opens up across the time space continum, leading to a battle fleet of the 4th mechanized battalion of the tiger'sclaw heavy assult force; comming into contact with the hobits. This rift also opens a portal at the 4th gaylord hobbit convention in sanfagsisco, leading to the joining of the nerds and hobbits..to battle against the peaceful terran army from the 22nd century earth. the hobits and nerds resorted to aggresive and sucidal tendences after learning their wangs were so small. The terrans with such huge wangs were caught off guard..but would soon whip all these inferior a-holes a new one:) happy story.

"Let's just make a televised Hobbit Holiday Special and call it a day."
That would only work if they can get Bea Arthur to star.

Wow after watching the endless hours of Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh discuss the wealth of lore from the Simmarillion and on from which small fragments of story could be culled to fill in what would seem obvious gaps in the main framework of hte trilogy it never occured to me that Vince of I Hate Movie Posters would actually be the True Tolkien expert.
GANDALPH IS WHITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What, we're too GOOD to go quoting from that sketch with Vince Vaughn and the other guy in it now?
