Jan 8 2008Golden Globes Ceremony, Parties, Wedding Cancelled
The Writers Guild strike has meant a lot of scripted shows we love (The Office), hate (anything involving the hour-long investigation of a crime scene), or don't care about (Psych? Do people watch Psych? Who?) have been taken off the air. But the more dire consequence has been that the content void has filled with a horrible glut of reality TV and starkly-lit game shows. It's taught us an important lesson about television writing: writers are desperately needed, not to entertain us, but to stop televised karaoke tournaments from entertaining us.
But wouldn't it all be worth it if three days a week of deals and non-deals meant that the most heinous of all pseudo-realities--an awards show--could be stopped? I believe so.
And thus, it has been done. Last night, the Hollywood Foreign Press announced that the typical five-hour spectacle of back slapping, stilted conversation, musical numbers, and applause-filled obituaries will be replaced by an hour-long news conference. No celebrities. No after-parties. No Bruce Vilanch-fueled comedy. It's amazing.
Even without a contract, this must be an even bigger victory than the WGA could have hoped for. Or at least it is for my Grandma, who just can't stay up until 12:30 for the news.

I love Psyche! It isn't super deep or drama laden but it is funny.

I love Psych!
And you should too, considering that it's advertising is fueling this site. ; )
Conversely, I couldn't give a crap about the Golden Globes, but I salute the actors for boycotting it!

If there was one redeeming value to the Golden Boobies... sorry, thinking of Pam Anderson again... Golden Globes was that we get to see all those wonderful celebs drunk and try to get through an acceptance speach. Damn, now I'll have to start watching Brittney Spears to make up for all that.

I'm still shocked that someone used to actually write that crap on the awards shows.

The writer's strike is a good opportunity to catch up on TV on DVD (for which the writers are not yet adequately being paid for... but let's ignore that for a moment)
You can follow my lead and watch all 9 seasons of the X-Files in consecutive order, Arrested Development in reverse order, watch all 3 seasons of The Office and pause to dial all phone numbers you catch on the screen. Then pick a random show to start watching that you never would have watched otherwise... like Battlestar Galactica and surprisingly become addicted, only to realize that season 3 won't be out for another 2 months.
See, the writers strike can be fruitful!

lol. People actually reporting it's cancellation like it's a real awards ceremony. awww.
Wasn't the golden globes cancelled decades ago when a director managed to buy a 'best actress' award for his leading actress/girlfriend?
The Hollywood Foreign Press are a bunch of celebrity fans... people act like they're some kind of credible association.

Psych is one of the funniest tv shows I've seen in a while. As for the Golden Globes, since Hot Fuzz probably wasn't going to sweep the categories, they weren't worth watching anyway.

I don't watch Psych, I just happen to be watching a marathon of it as I read this.
And how come they couldn't still have after-parties for the awards? All the benefits of winning and celebrating, without actually having to sit through the thing.
