Jan 24 2008'Get Smart' Trailer Missed It By That Much

Thanks to Kyle for sending over the disappointing Portuguese trailer to Get Smart. Despite a respectable cast, I'm near abandoning hope for this. At times it looks referential to a fault, with Carell basically doing a half-assed impression of the late Don Adams. Other times, it feels like they let Carell playing himself to the point that the original character is completely abandoned. Either approach might work individually (and sometimes it does), but together it's a jumbled mess, never committing to a style in the fear of alienating either modern Carell fans or fans of the original series. In other words, it's something like you'd expect from the director of classics like Nutty Professor 2 and Anger Management.

They'd have done better to show off more of the supporting cast. The Rock, though distractingly foreheady, is a far more charismatic actor than the cute-but-lifeless Anne Hathaway, as is Carell's fellow Office star David Koechner. And did you realize they somehow got Bill Murray to play an agent? Neither did I, until I looked it up, yet that alone would have been a far more enticing feature to show off than the wink-wink catchphrases they've pieced together into a trailer.

Yup, as a fan of the original series, this does look pretty disappointing.

Alan Arkin, Terry Crews, Bill Murray, and Steve Carrell.

I've got high hopes for this one... when I rent it.

Thats a shame...

Does anyone else remember the short lived Fox "Get Smart" in the mid-90's? Andy Dick played the son of Maxwell Smart and I think Elaine Hendrix played his twin sister as an agent also... Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

I remember that show, but not Andy Dick. Jebus, was it really Andy Dick? No wonder it only lasted like 3 episodes, haha. Well that and I think it was on CBS...

it looked pretty weak until the end phone part lol it made ne laugh

Not a big Hathaway fan.
Looks like it'll at least be good for a few chuckles.
I'll probably end up seeing it when it comes out on DVD.

@shady

Agreed. I'll go see this for the "element of surprise" phone gag alone.

After Evan Almight and this turkey, Carrell is going to be Hollywood Herpes, no one will want to touch him.

#11. Nah, Little Miss and Dan In Real will keep him going for a few more plus he can always fall back to a supporting role for one of Judd Apatows concoctions.

Plus, this might do okay. Look at Alvin and the Chipmunks? This looks a lot better than that and it's a 200 million dollar blockbuster. Besides, Jim Carey is still working.

I laughed at the phone, too.

Talented casts in shitty remakes are still 1000 times better than Meet The Spartans.

God damn, Get Smart is one of those shows that in no way needs a modern day movie based on it. Hell, maybe they'll make a Green Acres movie starring Cedric the Entertainer...
