Jan 21 2008'Cloverfield' Wins Weekend Box Office
1. Cloverfield - With $41 million, it really stomped the competition! Or how about, a monstrous win for Cloverfield? Or maybe, Cloverfield's weekend not as shaky as its camera? Cloverfield doesn't need its hand-held to win weekend? Whichever is most ridiculous.
2. 27 Dresses - $22.4 million, or about $830,000 per dress.
3. The Bucket List - Another $15.2 million proved it's the hot destination for baby boomers looking for something without "that awful shaky camera."
4. Juno - With another $10.3 million, next year's "this year's Little Miss Sunshine" will now be "this year's Juno," which is this year's Little Miss Sunshine.
5. National Treasure: Book of Secrets - Y'say Ghos' Rider is back hunnin' fer treasure?! Shoot, I'd collectively pay $8.1 million t'see that, y'all!
Conspicuously absent, but deservedly so: Mad Money, Alvin and the Chipmunks (finally).

Very mixed reviews about Cloverfield. But with all the hype it generated, there is no surpise that a lot of people found it to be a let down. Some people are saying it is too slow, some people are saying the first-person POV camera work gets real old real quick. I guess I'll wait and see it when it comes to PPV.

I saw Blair Godzilla Project this weekend. It was decent. I never want to watch it again, but I didn't leave the theater feeling the anger I get from episodes of Lost.
My favorite part was that the camera man's name is HUD, which made me think about videogame "Heads Up Display". The may as well have named the dude Cameron Mann.

The shaky-shaky would've been okay had it not induced nausea that lasted 3 hrs after I got home.
My only other problem was the ease with which we saw them running through NY following you know, impalement through the heart, helicopter crashes, etc....

Seriously, people are really crying about getting nauseous from the shaky cam? How do you nancies even manage to drive without your poor tum-tums churning?

Thank you #4.
I thought it was awesome myself.
6. kimmy4lsu - January 21, 2008 2:47 PM
i agree with #4 too....i hate to hear people bitching about the shaky cam......if you were intelligent, you would have known the whole movie was filmed with a camcorder......who the hell runs around, running away from bombs and monsters, and manages to keep a camera straight and steady the whole time?! think, people!!!!! i got nauseous too, but I COPED. if you managed to spend your money on such trash as Ghostrider and Good Luck Chuck, you should have been able to stomach "a little nausea."

I thought that movie was awesome. I didn't see any glaring problems with it... Shaky cam? Didn't make me sick. Forgettable characters? Well yeah but were they supposed to be all that interesting in the first place? Kickass monster? Yes.
8. booboo - January 21, 2008 4:02 PM
oh lordy, i saw it and let me tell you -that shaky cam drove me NUTS!!! granted i was very hungover from the night before but it was just way too much shakin goin on!!!! cool special effects though.

FYI Jenny, a large majority of people and as well as some of the critics reviews were in fact positive. And I personally believe all of those points you made about the movie are YOUR OWN. It's 76% fresh on RT, and the fresh reviews outweigh the rotten reviews completely... Cloverfield was a blast to watch from start to finish. It reinvigorates the monster genre to a whole new level. The camera is supposed to be shakey because it's taken from a first person POV ........SHEESH! I'm surprised alot of people complain mostly because of that reason, which is ridiculous.

Oh, it just took me a second to realize that Jenny DIDN'T watch Cloverfield, have you?. So you can't rely on some made up opinion to let you decide on how the movie is going to be like.

"4. Juno - With another $10.3 million, next year's "this year's Little Miss Sunshine" will now be "this year's Juno," which is this year's Little Miss Sunshine."
Don't stop! Little Miss Sunshine was last year's...?

#10-11- nope, didn't see it. I was just commenting on the fact that it has received mixed reviews. Apparently I should mark your opinion in the "liked it" category? ;)
13. Vinkoniggma - January 21, 2008 6:59 PM
I thought the monster would be a gigantic, pee and curry scented Bin Laden?
14. Connor - January 22, 2008 2:12 AM
Cloverfield was hella tight. And I liked the camera, it made my eyes hurt once near the middle for about two seconds, but not enough to really even complain about.
15. MrGutts - January 22, 2008 7:30 AM
I would give it a C- maybe.. and
Who the fuck has a hand held video camera that lasts more than 3 hours without recharging it, much less 9 as they said in it! If you do, I wanna buy it..
Plus the makers of that movie still don't grasp how really powerful the militarys missles and bombs are, plus the shockwave after they hit, most of that city would have been destroyed just by the waves. I'm sorry that fucking monster would have been a fine red mist after some of those bombers came by..
Bah to hell with the movie, it just got down graded to a D now!

I personally liked the movie, Cloverfield, but felt it had minor problems. I won't discuss them here, due to spoilers. A lot of people are saying that Cloverfield could reach the $100 million dollar mark in box office sales. I personally doubt that. Despite it already making about $50 million, a lot of that was teenagers who complained about the shakey camera, or lack of monster. They will then tell their friends how "bad" the movie was, and the teens will go see something else. I can only imagine how Rambo will do next week...
The Bucket List, I am personally impressed with. I thought it would bomb, but it has almost reached its $45 million dollar budget. it skews very old, though. I guess that helps.
Juno, I think could reach $100 million. This movies success is all word of mouth, in my opinion, though. It was also the only comedy in the last few weeks.

#16-
Steve, man, lack of monster? That monster was all over the movie. I half expected that at the end he'd grab the camera out of Hud's hand and do the "I'm watching you" hand gesture where you point at your eyes and then at the other person.

Glad I only paid $3 of that BS. Wish it had been free.
I'm surprised Sweeney Todd isn't burying half these movies, except the family friendly ones.
I guess some kids who never saw a movie before will like this. I'm still buzzing from the Batman trailer before "I Am Legend".
@7 I guess I'm annoyed that it focused on the forgettable, unbelievable characters for like 90 minutes. Maybe if they were all stomped individually...
@9 Blair Witch Godzilla probably sounded good in theory, did not work well in execution.
@13 I thought it would be that hairy Khalid dude from Pakistan with the Flashdance sweater.
@15 points I also pondered. That light will drain you quick. I heard bunker busters could, like, penetrate stuff.
@17 I think the monster was drowned out by those boring losers with the camcorder.
19. Steve S - January 24, 2008 9:59 AM
#18-I agree, Sweeney Todd was amazing.
And The Dark Knight looks sick.

I thought the movie was awesome, several small reasons. It also had some ridiculous stuff in it like, how the hell did rob, beth and hud live and the army people didnt in the heli. crash? but anyways, shaky camera wasnt a big deal at all, and i have a camera that lasts 4 hours with the light on just fine, and could get a battery pack that would make it last 9 and it was only 300, im sure there are cameras that can last longer, let alone it has night vision so it has to be good. Bah!
