Jan 10 2008A Final 'Cloverfield' Marketing Blitzkrieg

cloverfield-images-notes.jpg

If you somehow missed the assault of trailers, TV ads, viral videos, clips, competitions, spirit quests, etc. for Cloverfield, consider yourself lucky. You've successfully avoided a 6-month campaign in which they've shown us every possible way to not show us the film's monster. But if you're looking to go in fresh, there's still one more marketing cornucopia you'll need to turn away before the premiere next week: this glut of new images and 31 pages of production notes.

And thanks to everyone who sent in this supposed Cloverfield monster drawing. I'm pretty sure it's fake, but I'm positive it's awesome.

Looks positively Lovecraftian...

It looks like "Sin" from Final Fantasy X.

that drawing is definitely fake and its really really old. it was done by a private artist for a contest that wasnt even affiliated with the producers of the movie, just a fansite or fan forum. the contest was for what you think the monster looks like. it is pretty cool though.

Confirmed. It's just fan art. And it's probably better than the real monster.

Nice cleveage shot.

That said, if this movie is "Lovecraftian" we'll never actually SEE the monster. Lovecraft never really fully reveals the monster in his best short stories. That's the point. The unknowable / hidden / unfathomable is ultimately more frightening than what we know. Classic tenants of Gothic horror.

Didn't JJ Abrams make some comment about people being surprised about something? That something is that he's already shown us everything we're going to see/know about the monster!

I've an extremely low opinion of JJ Abrams, so I'm convinced that A) the monster is Cthulhu (whether Abrams eventually admits it or not) and B) the audience will never see more of it than has already been shown.

I think #5 & #6 got it exactly right!

IAI! YOG-SOGGOTH!!!!

I don't think it's anything literally Lovecraftian. In several interviews about the movie, Abrams has stated that he wanted Americans to have their "own Godzilla" - something that was new and uniquely ours (as far as giant monsters attacking cities I guess).

Now, maybe he was just fucking lying through his teeth. But there doesn't seem to be any reason to think it's Cthulhu. There's more reason to think it's actually just Godzilla after all, but maybe he gave it a new name or something :/

This must be the Cloverfield monster! The tall one, not the fat one!
