'Gatchaman' Makes Space-Bird-Ninjas Sleek and Stuff

For some time, I've had the aching need to know how someone could strangle whatever remaining fun, nostaglia, and enjoyable kitsch out of old Japanese anime. The Wachowskis' live-action Speed Racer provided a logical answer--treat it like an aging celebrity, using modern technology to streamline it to the point that you can barely stand to look at it--but leave it to these production stills from Gatchaman to provide an assenting second opinion. Unless this is the only idea we have left, it seems a tad superfluous to modernize a team of young ninjas dressed as astronaut birds.
