Dec 19 2007Chow Yun-Fat Lowered to Doing 'Dragonball'
In a brilliant casting move, Fox is getting an actual martial arts star to play a role in their movie about non-stop fighting, (based on the Japanese cartoon about non-stop fighting and, apparently, actual Dragon Balls) Dragonball. Often respectable actor Chow Yun-Fat has joined the live-action adaptation in the role of Master Roshi, Goku's mentor.
I know nothing about the original series, so you'll have to tell me if this makes sense. It sounds like the perfect way to add some slight credibility to a production that deserves none. And on that note, do you think there's any way we can resurrect George C. Scott to play Sgt. Slaughter in G.I. Joe?
PS: This is one of Hollywood Reporter's worst headlines in some time. "Chow rolls to Fox"? Like he's a ball, is that it? Jesus.

Wasn't Sargent Slaughter a wrestler? Couldn't he play himself? Maybe he's too old.

Fat isn't really a "martial arts star." The only martial arts film he did was Crouching Tiger, as far as I am aware. He had to learn the choreographed moves for the film (much like the actors in the matrix films.) Previously his characters were more along the lines of gangsters or "Dirty Hary" types cops who mostly shot the sh!t out of people with guns.
yeah, im a geek I admit it

The movie is going to suck.
Dragon Ball Z can never be made into a live action movie, no matter how much money or good cast you have. It is impossible to make the movie as good as the cartoon.

You really need to shut the hell up
You know nothing about the show so all you do is make fun of it and think it's about Dragon's balls, it is really annoying

"It is impossible to make the movie as good as the cartoon."
I thought it would be impossible to make the movie as BAD as the cartoon.

This will suck, some comic books (yes DBZ is asia's superman) can be made into movies, but not this. If you have ever watched the show it is way quirky and probably the bar for anime. It will be like the first 4 batman movies except most of americans have no clue what DBZ is. Its a shame too, just another Hollywood $150 million screw up. Oh well, at least the NEW Batman looks good!

I think an important thing to remember is that Chow is playing a character who shoots blood out of his nose whenever he sees breasts. At least, that's how it was in the original comic books.

Wasn't Master Roshi the pervy old martial arts guy who lived with a talking turtle on a tiny island?

Chow yun fat will make a great master Roshi, they will also be making about four films, from dragonball to probably the cell saga. I too hope they dont crap up the movie but even still im so excited about it because i've been watching dragn ball z since i was little. As much i liked Emmy rossum in phantom of the opera, and as much as i liked Justin chatwin as robbie in war of the worlds i dont think they are good choices, Emmy Rossum is a little too soft for Bulma and Justin chatwin just doesnt look like a goku type in anyway. It would be so awesome if Jet li could play vegeta, but thats just a personal oppinion.
Even if the films arent good we still have the Anime, and excuse me but this film does deserves a lot of credibility so shut it and keep it to yourself. For someone who doesnt know the story line you sure do like the sound of your own voice, your the last person to decide whats best for the films or not and you have no right to tease or make fun of the actors wether they are right for the part or not...idiot.

The movie's going to suck big time. I'm a huge DB fan and DBZ fan, but hiring a cast of wimps and pretty boys to play people like Goku is just idiotic. The morons can't even get the hair right, so Chatwin looks more like the guitarist from Green Day.
